Upendra promises treat for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada fans

Kannada superstar and director Upendra is shooting for his new, untitled venture that was launched here with fanfare last month. And he promises not to disappoint Kannada, Telugu and Tamil fans. 'I am introducing 20 new artists in the film. The audition itself was the most exciting. Some of them will be seen in all the three languages. If I can prove to all of you that I have made efforts to present a different film, it would be a great victory for me,' he said. The film's heroine Nayantara and other artists are joining him for the shoot here. 'I am most worried about the huge expectations built around this film. We will be shooting for more than one hundred days. Some portions of the film will be re-shot for the Telugu and Tamil versions of the film with a particular set of artists belonging to the Telugu and Tamil film industries,' Upendra told IANS. Upendra also added that he will be using the Super 35 camera for shooting the film. H

'Saas-bahu' serials were a curse: Kitu Gidwani

Kitu Gidwani , who was last seen in Madhur Bhandarkar 's hit movie 'Fashion', is returning to the big screen with 'Hello Zindagi'. Also a well known television face, she feels 'saas-bahu' soaps were a curse. ''Hello Zindagi' is a lovely little film which talks about the life of a young woman and an older one. While the young one is spoilt and is into drugs, the older one is a doctor whose married life is not going well. The film tracks their journey as they find a new meaning to their life,' Gidwani told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai. 'It also deals with a sensitive and global environmental issue of conservation of Olive Ridley Turtles, which is finely moulded into the story,' she added. Also with the actress in the film are Kanwaljeet Singh and Neena Gupta , who are teaming up more than a decade after the hit serial 'Saans'. Reema Lagoo's daughter Mrunmayee is debuting with the f

NBC gets silver for Olympics, Seinfeld no medal

The Vancouver Winter Olympics proved a ratings triumph for beleaguered NBC, but popular comedian Jerry Seinfeld's new show stumbled with critics as the U.S. television network returned to regular programming. NBC said on Monday that 190 million Americans watched the Vancouver Olympics on its stations and cable outlets over 17 days, making them the second-most-watched Winter games since Lillehammer in 1994. The network, which has been bottom of the four big U.S. TV broadcasters for several years, said NBC's Vancouver cover drew 9 percent more viewers than the combined efforts of rivals ABC, CBS and Fox during more than two weeks of competition. The prime time average nightly audience for the Olympics was 24.4 million compared to an average 22.3 million over the 17 days for ABC, CBS and Fox. The action in Vancouver also twice toppled Fox ratings king "American Idol," marking the first defeats of "Idol" in six years by any TV programm

Wall Street is alive with the sound of ... Chopin?

Wall Street might not seem like the obvious location for a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of romantic composer Frederic Chopin, but it's the venue this week for 200 hours of Chopin performances by an eclectic line-up of pianists. As they take a break from their workday, Wall Street traders and office workers can join the global celebration of Chopin's birthday and take stock of the vast and beloved repertoire of Poland's most illustrious composer. Waltzes, mazurkas, sonatas, nocturnes, impromptus, and etudes are all on offer with performances daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on four different pianos placed at various locations in the World Financial Center's street and lobby levels. "Chopin's great talent lay in his ability to compose music that was both technically demanding yet accessible to a wide audience," said Debra Simon, artistic director of the World Financial Center. Each evening at 7:00 p.m., the venue

David Bowie's new makeover: Rock 'n' roll recluse

Image
David Bowie is spending his Golden Years in anonymity. The 63-year-old rock icon last released a new album in 2003, and stopped touring in 2004 after suffering a heart attack during a European trek. The early Internet enthusiast has not even updated his official blog since October 2006, when he proudly revealed he would voice a character on the kids cartoon show "SpongeBob SquarePants." Last year, he attended a few red-carpet events to help promote his son Duncan Jones' movie "Moon." But otherwise the musical chameleon seems to be savouring his latest metamorphosis into married father of a 9-year-old daughter in New York. "He's just being Dad, I think, laying low," said bass player Gail Ann Dorsey, who started working with Bowie almost 15 years ago. "I can't imagine he's not writing or doing something, but we'll just have to wait and see." Dorsey said she e-mailed him a birthday greeting in January

Seinfeld's "Marriage" gets big ratings, bad reviews

Image
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld's much-anticipated return to U.S. television drew bumper audiences but some scathing reviews on Monday for his new comedy game show, "The Marriage Ref." Some 14.5 million Americans watched the debut of show on NBC on Sunday as the network ended its coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, which drew more than 185 million viewers over the past 17 days. Seinfeld, 55, who has done little TV since his beloved sitcom "Seinfeld" ended in 1998, is executive producer and occasional panelist on "The Marriage Ref," which has stars weigh-in on the light-hearted arguments of American couples. The show is intended as one of the highlights of NBC's hastily revamped 10 p.m. schedule after it axed "The Jay Leno Show" in February in an embarrassing retreat from cheap-to-produce talk show fare in the prime-time hour traditionally seen as the home of expensive scripted drama. Sunday's 30-minute &q

"Idol" creator launches "Dream" interactive venture

Image
Simon Fuller, the creator of the multimillion dollar "American Idol" TV franchise, is betting on the Internet for his latest venture -- a multimedia interactive reality show that debuts on video-viewing site Hulu.com on Tuesday. "If I Can Dream" follows five aspiring artists bidding for stardom in Hollywood in what is billed as a groundbreaking marriage of social networking and the fast-growing market for television shows streamed on the Internet. It will also be the first recurring show available to select international audiences on Hulu -- the joint venture between NBC Universal, News Corp and Walt Disney that allows viewers to stream TV shows over the Web. In what sounds like a cross between "Idol" and "Big Brother", 30-minute weekly episodes on Hulu will track the triumphs and set-backs of two actresses, a musician, an actor and a model looking to break into show business. Viewers will also get unedited access,

TV's "Glee" takes to stage with U.S. concerts

Image
The hit TV show "Glee" is taking to the stage with a series of seven concerts in four big U.S. cities in May, Fox television said on Monday. The cast of the quirky musical comedy set around a high school singing club will perform some of the most memorable numbers from the first season of the TV show, including "Don't Stop Believin", "Jump" and "Don't Rain on My Parade." The concerts will feature kids from the Golden Globe award-winning show, including Lea Michele (Rachel), Cory Monteith (Finn), Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Chris Colfer (Kurt), but not adult cast members such as Matthew Morrison's teacher Will Shuester, and Jane Lynch's scheming cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester. "The response of the fans to our little show has been so immediate and so gratifying, we wanted to get out and thank them live and in person," said Ryan Murphy, co-creator of "Glee". "And what show lends it

Fashion week woes put spotlight on Milan's influence

Image
Milan has long claimed its place among the top fashion capitals of the world, but calendar woes have fashionistas asking whether it is losing influence. While top names like Giorgio Armani, Gucci and Versace gave it their all at the autumn/winter 2010-2011 catwalk shows and won wide praise for their lines, the talk of fashion week has centred on the intensive schedule of its cramped calendar. Organisers were left scrambling to fit the major names into four days out of the Feb. 24 - March 1 run after powerful fashion editor, Vogue's Anna Wintour, reportedly said she planned to shorten her attendance to go to Paris fashion week and then the Oscars in Los Angeles. Both local and international press have written about the "Wintour effect" on the northern Italian city and how designers were bowing to demands of the international press. Mario Boselli, the chairman of Italy's National Chamber of Fashion -- which organises Milan fashion week --

Brass bands in UK chart battle, mark miners' strike

Two albums featuring brass bands hit the shelves in Britain this month in an unusual chart battle designed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the end of a coal miners' strike, in March 1985. "The Music Lives On Now the Mines Have Gone" was released on Monday on the Island label, part of music giant Universal. "A Band for Britain" goes on sale a week later on the Decca label, part of the same group. Universal, keen to play up the rivalry between two of its own acts, has labelled it the "battle of the bands ... with the potential to blast even Lady Gaga from the top." Disco diva Lady Gaga is also signed to Universal. According to Decca, the Dinnington Colliery Band from Yorkshire was on the brink of folding when it was chosen to feature in a BBC television series "A Band For Britain". After that, Universal signed it up in a lucrative record deal. Reflecting the social and economic decline of former mining

TV's "Parenthood" revisits family life, 20 years on

Image
More than two decades after Oscar-winning director Ron Howard's family inspired his hit movie "Parenthood", a new generation of writers is bringing the joys, trials and humor of family life to television. The TV series "Parenthood", featuring four grown siblings in the colorful Braverman family, their children and their parents, makes its much-anticipated debut on March 2 on NBC. It is a centerpiece of struggling NBC's efforts to revive scripted dramas and lure prime-time viewers after the embarrassing failure of its talk program "The Jay Leno Show" at 10pm. For the producers and writers, however, "Parenthood" goes far beyond being merely a show to improve a time slot, and is a heartfelt, character-driven story that re-imagines a timeless tale of family life across three generations. Lauren Graham of "Gilmore Girls" fame plays a cash-strapped single mom who returns with her two teenage kids to live with

Stone Age sights, sounds, smells at Croat museum

Forensic science and computer simulations are just a couple of the high tech tools used to explain one branch of the evolutionary tree at a new museum in Croatia. The Neanderthal Museum opened last week and was built on the site where scientists have found the greatest concentration in Europe of Neanderthal remains, the bones, skulls, tools and other effects of an extinct offshoot of mankind who inhabited parts of Asia and Europe until 30,000 years ago. The museum's concept -- which sums up evolution in a 24-hour period displayed on a winding track along the museum's two floors -- highlights the late starting time of 23:52 for the first appearance of any of mankind's relations. The museum, built with help from U.S. and British natural history museums and others, displays many of the bones and artefacts excavated here in the late 19th century. "At that time scientists were looking for the missing link, half-man, half-animal, and the Neande

Actor Thilakan suspended from Malayalam film forum

Veteran Malayalam actor Thilakan was Monday suspended from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) for 'indiscipline' after his tirade against the association and other senior actors. Addressing reporters, AMMA president Innocent said they had given Thilakan 'a long rope' but he continued to criticise the AMMA and 'hence we have no other option but to take this step'. 'We have only decided to suspend him. He has been given time till March 8 to appear in person and give his explanation. Today he gave us a letter stating that he is busy working in an English film at Alappuzha and hence cannot appear,' said Innocent. 'He has been up against AMMA and has been airing sound bytes on television which has upset not only us but also other members of AMMA,' he said. 'His frequent outbursts for no reason is in bad taste. He could have easily called us and asked us to intervene if he had any issues in working in any

ABBA helps Jews celebrate ancient festival in Sydney

ABBA members Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid are said to have helped Jews in Sydney celebrate a festival that dates back about 2500 years. The city's Jewish community observed Purim, a day marking the story of Queen Esther's rescue of the Jews from genocide in Persia, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. Part of the tradition of Purim is attending the annual celebration in dress-up. Sydney's Great Synagogue became a sea of brightly coloured wigs, masks and a man in jockey silks on February 28. The other Purim tradition is during the reading of the book of Esther - also known as the Megillah - to boo at each mention of royal adviser Haman, who wanted to destroy the Jewish people. To cap off the celebration, the traditional reading at the Great Synagogue was followed by a performance of Megillah Mia!, a stage show that takes the Purim story and puts it to the music of ABBA. Such performances, known as a "purim spiel&

Casio EX-S7 and EX-Z35 EXILIM digital cameras debuted

Image

The two new cameras are point-and-shoot units with a bevy of automatic features for easy use called the EX-S7 and the EX-Z35 . The cams both use the new EXILIM Engine 5.0 for lower power consumption and high image quality. The lower power consumption is important for longer battery life, meaning more images taken per charge. The EX-Z35 digital camera also has 12.1MP and a 3x optical zoom lens. The big feature of the Z35 is its svelte 0.8-inch profile. It can record video, but only at a max resolution of 848 x 480. WAD2 Windows Phone 7 theme boosts performance [Video]

Image
Remember yesterday’s Windows Phone 7 Metro UI theme for Windows Mobile 6.5 devices? Performance on the early alpha was sluggish, but it looks like Jaxbot’s project isn’t the only one out there looking to put some new shine on older devices. LeSScro has been working on a Metro UI theme, based on WisBar Advance Desktop 2.x, and it’s running a whole lot more smoothly than yesterday’s attempt. Like that, it includes the distinctive tile-based Start screen, together with the lockscreen with its time, date and notification icons. There are transitional animations between pages, as well as profile settings (including WiFi and volume), and he’s even added in various Hubs – Microsoft’s way of distinguishing between sets of common functionality – including Pictures, Games, Media, Office and Stocks. Right now it’s only suitable for WVGA devices, however, and it’s still in a relatively early development stage. Frankly, with news coming out of Microsoft that pretty much no Windows Mobile 6.5.3

Archos 7 and Archos 8 Home Tablets official: €149 but sluggish CPUs

Image
Archos have officially announced their so-called Home Tablets at CeBIT 2010 this week, and there’s good news and bad. The Archos 7 Home Tablet and the Archos 8 digital photo frame each run Android, just like the Archos 5, but they have sluggish ARM9 processors rather than any of the more speedy SoC’s we’ve seen on other tablets lately. Archos’ trick, though, is in pricing: the two devices are €149 ($203), making them reasonably budget friendly. The Archos 7 Home Tablet has a 7-inch touchscreen and WiFi, along with 2GB or 8GB of onboard storage. Weight is 350g and the whole thing measures just 12mm thick; the standard battery is good for up to 7hrs of video playback or 44hrs of audio playback. There’s also a USB port for hooking up a PC or digital camera. It will go on sale in April 2010, priced at €149 ($203) for the 2GB model and €179 ($244) for the 8GB. As for the Archos 8 Home Tablet, it has a larger, 8-inch touchscreen and is also 12mm thick; however the weight shifts up sligh

Archos A70HB Family Digital Assistant tipped for CeBIT 2010

Image
Archos have already been pretty upfront about their plans to bring larger versions of their Android-based internet tablet to CeBIT 2010 this week, and according to the show guide they’ll slot into the company’s new Archos Home Slate category. As tipped before, the tablets will prioritize family activities, such as group email and calendar access, together with the usual tablet fare such as internet access and multimedia. In fact, according to Archos this isn’t just a new segment for them but the creation of a whole new acronym: the Family Digital Assistant (FDA). Such a device would be permanently online and work both as a media deck and as a home organizer. According to Archos the first such device – the A70HB – will be on show this week, though we’ve no way of knowing whether it’s actually the same tablet as the Archos 7 we’ve seen previously

Sony PS3 blocking PSN access: clock issue to blame?

Image
Trouble is afoot with the first through third generation of PS3 consoles – basically all of them bar the newest PS3 Slim – as what appears to be a date-related issue blocks access to the PlayStation Network. Those gamers attempting to access the PSN are unable to sign in, nor play games, use dynamic themes or view and/or synchronize their trophies; meanwhile the PS3’s clock is reset to 12/31/1999. Owners are speculating that the issue centers on Sony’s use of a GMT core clock, from which basic calculations are made to accommodate different timezones, and which has proved unable to roll over to March 1st. Sony, for their part, have admitted that there is an issue and say that “we’re narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all.” No timescale on how long that might take, however.

Wacom Cintiq 21UX: $2k of 21-inch super-sensitive graphics tablet

Image
Wacom have announced their latest Cintiq combination LCD display and graphics tablet, and it’s a monster. The Wacom Cintiq 21UX has a full 21.3-inch 1600 x 1200 4:3 LCD display and an active digitizer that recognizes 2048 levels of pressure. They’ve also thrown plenty of hardware controls at the tablet; the Cintiq 21UX has eight programmable shortcut buttons on either side of the display, together with a touch-strip on either side of the rear bezel. Toggle buttons allow you to control up to four different features with each touch-strip, via the round control on the front. That way you can cycle through multiple brush settings all with one hand, while actually using the stylus with the other. That stylus has a tilt range of +/-60 degrees and Wacom reckon you hardly need to be pressing it to the display in order to begin painting. The 21UX itself can rotate 180-degrees and tilt between 10- and 65-degrees, while connectivity is via DVI-I. Of course, as with other Cintiq tablets none

eviGroup Paddle 10-inch multitouch slate revealed

Image
French tablet and MID firm eviGroup have outed their latest tablet, and it’s an extension of sorts on their existing 10-inch Pad UMPC. The eviGroup Paddle will go on sale alongside the Pad, but has a 10.1-inch LED-backlit multitouch capable display and a new, custom UI called Scale which separates media, apps and other functionality into tabbed categories and a barrel-like scrolling interface. As for the specifications of the slightly iPhone-styled device, the Paddle uses the same Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor as the Pad together with a choice of 160GB, 250GB or 320GB traditional hard-drive or 16GB or 32GB of SSD storage. There’s also a webcam and microphone, together with integrated WiFi and 3G; eviGroup have also added an external antenna connection, which while initially solely for extended WiFi range will – at some future point – be used for DTT digital television reception. OS is Windows 7 or XP Home Edition, and Scale runs on top as an application; there’s talk of an SDK for

Mobile Fundraising Campaigns Begin For Chile

Image
Following the earthquake in Haiti, mobile fundraising via texting exploded; with over $40 million raised via text messaging alone. With the massive success of the Haiti campaign, mobile donations are now being used to raise funds for the victims of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Chile over the past weekend. Mobile giving is fairly simple; you text a keyword to a code on your phone and a micro-donation is made to a given charity. The donation is billed via your carrier. Similar to the Haiti campaign, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile are waiving text-messaging fees for the donations. According to the Mobile Giving Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, The American Red Cross and World Vision are all accepting SMS donations for the Chile earthquake. Mobile Accord, which ran Haiti mobile fundraising efforts for the Red Cross, is also coordinating SMS fundraising on behalf of several philanthropic foundations raising money for Chile. Big B to sing for an Orangutan

Image
Everyone needs a piece of our legendary icon Amitabh Bachchan, we say… Such an epitome of talent, Big B is indeed waited upon filmmakers to enhance their project with his association and as an attempt to make the star to do something unique. It is heard that Mr. Bachchan has been requested by a Kannada film ‘Appu-Pappu’, to lend his voice. And guess who will have the star’s enigmatic voice? An Orangutan! According to the national award winning music director Hamsalekha, in two rounds of discussions the actor has given positive response and shown interest towards the act. When the thought of a song for Orangutan surfaced, Hamsalekha suggested the name of Amitabh Bachchan. The lyric that Amitabh Bachchan is going to sing in his voice is related to human kindness that is missing in world today. It is a slow number that says why a human being is behaving like the way he is today. A meaningful song that aptly suits for a high caliber like Amitabh Bachchan, says Hamsalekha.

She is what Superstars are made up of! An actress on every director's wishlist. She is none other than Katrina Kaif, the lady who is giving not just the Bolly heroines, but also top models a marathon run for their money. After having launched a thousand (well... make that a million plus) products with her ravishing smile, Katrina Kaif is now all set to do it all over again, this time round with the prestigious Lux soap. The news of Kats becoming brand ambassador has really many minds thinking since till now it was the eternal beauty Aishwarya Rai who was at the helm of things for the said soap brand, for long time now. Also the last time round, it was the very same Kats who replaced Ash as the face for the Nakshatra range of jewelry. Kats will be endorsing 'Lux Purple Lotus & Cream', a soap infused with anti-ageing properties. With this, Katrina joins the ranks of all the Dream Girls of Bollywood.
