Promising Youngsters

Image
2009 saw a number of new faces debuting with promising performances. Kailash and Archana Kavi who were noticed with ‘Neelathamara’ and Nishan, Asif Ali and Reema Kallingal who debuted with ‘Rithu' have made a good start in 2010. Reema Kallingal has already proved herself with plenty of films. In 2010, she has already started well with the big hit ‘Happy Husbands’. Archana Kavi has already completed her second movie ‘Mummy And Me’ and is already booked for a number of small movies. Kailash, had a slow start, but will be seen in a number of big films in 2010 including 'Shikaar'' in which he will share the lead with Mohanlal. 'Best Of Luck' directed by MA Nishad, will also have him donning the lead along with Prabhu and Urvashi. Kailash will also be in the next movie of Anil C Menon scripted by K Gireesh Kumar. Thilakan replaced with Hindi actor

Image
Hindi actor Rajath Kapoor has replaced Thilakan in the international project 'Dam 999' directed by Sohan Roy. Rajath has already started shooting for the movie, which tells about the lives of nine persons living in the premises of a Dam, during British India. Meanwhile, director Sohan Roy has personally intimated Thilakan who is staying in the hotel with the crew, about the replacement. But Thilakan who asks for the compensation also demanded the reasons for his removal from the movie in written form. ''I just want to make this incident a part of Mollywood movie history and that is why I am insisting for a written statement and compensation'' said Thilakan. The director Sohan Roy has said ''it was a very sad decision from their part which was forced upon us by the Malayalam film industry associations. Anyhow we have decided to pay the hotel rent of the actor, for any number of days he wants to stay with the crew''.

Lal-Priyan drops IPL plans

Image
It was heard for quite some months that Mohanlal and Priyadarshan are planning to buy an Indian Premier League franchisee for Kerala, as the BCCI is planning to increase the number of teams participating in the League. Both had been in the background works for quite some time accumulating the needed money for becoming the prestigious owners of the glamour event. But as of now, it seems that the suddenly changed regulations for owning the IPL franchisee has come as a blow for the duo. Apart from the 300 crores that has to be submitted for participating in IPL auction, the new regulations asked for another 5000 crores as bank guarantee which must be provided by any of the nationalised banks. Mohanlal and Priyan who has managed to find partners to raise the 300 crores for participation bowed out of the race, after the discussions they had at Mumbai with other partners. 'The information regarding the change in rules was given at a short notice and it was extremely diffic

The star system made me inactive-K G George

Image
Thilakan seems to have unleashed a pandemonium into which new and new entrants are assured, day after day. The latest interesting opinion came from the M.D. of the Kerala State film development Corporation, K G George who observed that it is extremely unfortunate for the senior stars of the industry to indulge in such a kind of public fight. The renowned director who has created classics like Adaminte Variyellu, Yavanika and Mela also sites that it was due to this superstar supremacy in Mollywood that he is keeping away from producing more films. Incidentally the last film from the director ''Elavamkodu Deasm'' featuring Mammootty came out 12 years ago, which was a big flop in the box office. K G George also dislikes being a mediator using his present position, as he finds that the maximum thing that such mediation can bring up is worsen the existing relations.

Azhikode attacks Mohanlal and AMMA again

Image
Critic Sukumar Azhikode has urged the State Government to conduct a public inquiry into the activities of AMMA. Addressing a press meet in Thrissur on Friday, he said the inquiry commission should look into the corruption and other inappropriate activities of AMMA and its members. Further he called for a change in the leadership of AMMA saying that will help for the healthy growth of Malayalam film industry. Azhikode also said Mohanlal misused his Colonel status in the Territorial Army by posing in uniform for commercial advertisements of Malabar Gold. He also criticized the decision of Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit, Kalady, to confer the Doctorate on Mohanlal calling it unwarranted.

Russel Harvard in Bangalore

Image
The Oscar nominated ‘There will be Blood’ Hollywood cinema deaf actor Russel Harvard was in Bangalore city on Thursday for the promotion of ‘Words’ short film directed by a Kannadiga software engineer Anup S Bhandari. The post production of 20 minutes short film ‘Words’ was held in Bangalore and that made the Hollywood actor Russel Harvard come to Bangalore. Russel Harvard has immensely liked the script of Anup and he has worked for this short film for six days in USA without any financial benefits. ‘Words’ is all about the deaf and normal person. Deaf persons are in no way inferior to anyone in this world is what made Russel Harvard to accept this assignment. Russel is suffering from this deafness right from birth and his parents and ancestors are also having this ailment. The Kannada superstar Sudeep greeted Russel Harvard at Atria Hotel and recalled from his memory the performance of Russel in ‘There will be Blood’. I envy the actor Russel and also jealous for his h

Updated: Disney Pulls WABC-TV From Cablevision in New York; Back On By Oscars?

dd3eNo deal was worked out by midnight on the east coast and Disney has pulled WABC-TV from Cablevision. Here’s the latest in the war of the words from ABC (updated to include Cablevision statement below): Statement from Rebecca Campbell, President and General Manager, WABC-TV, regarding Cablevision’s loss of ABC7: “Cablevision has once again betrayed its subscribers by losing ABC7, the most popular station in the tri-state area. This follows two years of negotiations, during which we worked diligently, up to the final moments, to reach an agreement. Cablevision pocketed almost $8 billion last year, and now customers aren’t getting what they pay for…again. It’s time for Jim Dolan and the Dolan Family Dynasty to finally step up, be fair, and do what’s right for our viewers.” Cablevision customers can call 1-877-990-ABC7 or visit www.saveABC7.com for information on how to switch service providers or receive ABC7’s signal free, over-the-air. Report: Brothers & Sisters Renewed By ABC for a Fifth Season

Image
Roger Friedman of T he Hollywood Reporter reports that ABC’s Brothers & Sisters has been renewed for a fifth season: I’m told ABC has renewed “Brothers & Sisters” for a fifth season. The Sally Field soap opera has had, I think, five show runners in four seasons.

Leno Beats Letterman Again on Friday to Sweep The Week

Image
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno won the late night wars again on Friday, albeit with its lowest numbers of the week, of course everyone had its lowest numbers for the week. Friday! In Late-Night Fast Nationals Friday Night: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (1.2 rating in adults 18-49) led the time period over CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman” (0.8) and ABC’s “Nightline (0.9) in fast national “live plus same day” ratings from Nielsen Media Research. The “Tonight” margin over “Late Show” in fast-national adult 18-49 rating is 50 percent. In total viewers in the fast nationals, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (4.9 million) ranked #1 among the major networks in the time period over “Late Show” (3.2 million) and “Nightline” (3.7 million). The “Tonight” margin over “Late Show” in total viewers in these fast-national results is 53 percent. At 12:35 a.m., “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (0.7 in adults 18-49) to

Fringe Renewed By Fox for a Third Season

Image
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Fringe has been renewed for a third season : Sci-fi fans who may be concerned about the state of the genre on network TV (we’re looking at you, V and FlashForward ) have at least one reason to rejoice: EW has learned exclusively that Fox has picked up Fringe for a third season. Though the show isn’t exactly blowing the roof off of Nielsen — it’s been averaging just 7.6 million viewers and is ranked No. 50 in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic this season — it managed to survive in a tough new time period on Thursdays. Rejoice! More Dr. Walter Bishop. Despite some comments on the site, I’m not surprised by its renewal. I am surprised at the timing of the announcement though. Perhaps Fox didn’t want fans worrying about its fate when it returns in a few weeks with new episodes. This year there will be very little to announce in May! Update : Though there was never any doubt once EW reported it that this is official

Shocker: Melrose Place Actor Predicts It Will Be Renewed

Image
Thomas Calabro, who plays Dr. Michael Mancini tells E! Online he thinks the show will be back . “Here’s what’s going on with that: We’re coming back,” Calabro tells us. “Right now, we’re airing our first five or six episodes internationally, and I think the show’s a big international hit. That’s enough to bring a show back. The original Melrose Place struggled at first, too, and it ended up being a hit for seven seasons,” Calabro continued. “We ended up being a defining mark of the ’90s, and I don’t see any reason why that can’t happen again.” Ah, international to the rescue. It’s not happening. Even if Mr. Calabro doesn’t see any reason why it can’t happen again, things are very different in 2010 than 1992. CW in 2010 is teeny tiny compared to FOX in 1992. And Melrose Place is CW’s worst-rated scripted show. Unlike Life Unexpected , which is on the bubble, and One Tree Hill which still seems likely be renewed, Melrose Place won’t be coming back despite limite

Hungry for Wireless Spectrum, “The Death of Broadcast TV” Morphs Into “KILL Broadcast TV”

Image
The problem with the radio spectrum is that it’s a natural phenomenon — the bandwidth available is the bandwidth available, and you can’t simply create more of it. On the other hand you could free up a ton of spectrum simply by getting rid of the spectrum allocated to broadcast TV. I don’t see this happening, at least not any time soon. However, I fully expect the chants will grow louder, and more frequent, especially from the iPhone loving, Twitter and Facebook enslaved digerati who see unlimited wireless broadband as both holy grail and God-given right. They argue, and reasonably so, that over 90% of the population already avails itself to cable and satellite services anyway, leaving less than 10% who use over the air (OTA) broadcast. One problem with that approach is that it understates actual OTA usage, perhaps by a fair bit, though it’s true the number of homes that are exclusively relying on OTA is estimated at less than 10%. Last Sunday’s New York Times co

MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew Draws 2.2 Million Viewers

Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew hoofed its way to cable’s top spot in key young demos Thursday night. ABDC counted 2.2 million watchers on average March 4, according to Nielsen data. The show posted a 2.2 rating against person 12 to 34 and a 2.8 among females 12 to 34, the medium’s best performance on Thursday night, said MTV officials. via Multichannel News . Yet another show not on the CW with a young female demo the CW would covet.

CBS ran original episodes of its Friday lineup. The 100th episode of Ghost Whisperer was not the network’s bright spot, with Medium grabbing top honors for CBS with adults 18-49, and Numb3rs having the most viewers of any CBS show. NBC claimed second place for the night with the premiere of Who Do You Think You Are? earning a 1.6 with adults 18-49 and 6.85 million viewers. For NBC on a Friday night that’s a pretty good result. It trailed Ghost Whisperer by 1/10th of a 18-49 rating point, but had a commanding 4/10ths lead over Supernanny . Two hours of Dateline with a 1.7/6 rating/share for adults 18-49 and 7.17 million viewers bested two hours of 2 0/20 and a 1.5/5 and 6.51 million vi

WABC-TV vs. Cablevision Going Down To The Wire

These games of chicken over carriage and retransmission fees always seem to go down to the wire before being resolved. Though Cablevision didn’t have a problem letting Food Network and HGTV go dark on its cable system for a while before working out a deal, I’ll be very surprised if it happens like that in the case of New York’s ABC affiliate. The deadline is the end of the day Saturday, but even though things have turned nasty in public, if WABC isn’t available on Cablevision for the Oscars Sunday night, I’ll be surprised. Here’s the latest public war of the words via press releases from both Cablevision and WABC. Cablevision Issues Updated Statement On ABC Disney Urges Disney President and CEO Bob Iger to Stop Holding Viewers Hostage, End Threats to Pull the Plug on ABC and Work to Reach a Fair Agreement BETHPAGE, N.Y., March 5 — Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) today continued to urge ABC Disney to listen to government officials and consumers and not pul

Sumanth, Swathi in Indraganti's next

Image
Indraganti Mohan Krishna has roped in Sumanth and Swathi for his next film, to be written and directed by him. The director of an award-winning film like Ashta Chamma, is quite upbeat that the actors have signed the film as soon as they heard the storyline. The film will be produced by P Ram Mohan. He was the producer of Ashta Chamma, too. Speaking to the media, the producer said that he was happy to work with Indraganti, again. This time around, the talented director has elected a novel, to base his film on. The Men Within - A Cricketing Tale, a novel written by one Harimohan Paruvu, is the one on which the film draws inspiration from. The film will go on the floors in the month of April and is planned for a September 5 release. The film is understandably coming up with a message, as the novel on which it is based has good tips on self-help and management. Tanikella Bharani, Subburaju and Shafi will play other important characters in the film.

Actor Raja attempts suicide

Image
Actor Raja, the Inkosari star, made a suicide bid yesterday. He reportedly consumed several sleeping pills, but was saved, after he was rushed to the hospital. Understandably depressed that his latest film has not seen wide theatrical release in the state, he made the bid. It is learnt that he is outraged at the clout and business-wise hold of a few big daddies in the industry, on the theatres in the state, which he feels is the reason why theatre owners were not open to rent out their spaces for screening his minor film Inkosari. Raja feels sad that the monopoly of a handful of producers is not good for the health of the industry. In a statement made to a popular daily, he openly alleged three biggies (producers). He even said Inkosari had been postponed owing to the unwillingness of the theatre owners to screen it, as most of them are, Raja says, owned by a few producers. Following his allegation, D Suresh Babu scoffed at the remarks of the actor, saying that what

Daring thief, this

Image
Ranga, as a conniving thief, is no ordinary conman. He always likes to loot the houses of the police. In Ranga, coming with the subtitle The Donga, Srikanth plays an interesting role of a thief of sorts. Srikanth's role has two hues to it. It is to be seen what they are only after the film releases. In a song currently being picturised, Srikanth is seen in a rugged, madcap look and shakes legs with oh-so-many girls in rural attire. The film is directed by actor-turned-director GV Sudhakar Naidu, who is also jointly producing it with C.R.Manohar Naidu. After 'A Aa E Ee', the film is important for Srikanth, who badly needs a hit. The director debuted who debuted with a film titled Hero, did not meet up with success. He is hoping to register his first success as a filmmaker with this one. Speaking to the media, GV said that Srikanth will be seen as a thief in the film. Ranga, a popular name for the typical rustic thief who earns livelihood by small-tim

Adhurs, Namo.. celebrate 50-day run

Image
Adhurs and Namo Venkatesa, which were released on January 13 and 14, have had a successful 50-day run. The films have been declared box office successes, with Adhurs emerging as the bigger winner between them. The film has crossed 50 days in 155 centres around the state. Namo Venkatesa has the same run in 122 centres. Thanking the audience for lapping up the film in a big way, Vallabhaneni Vamsimohan said that the film is going to complete 100 days soon. He thanked the patronage shown by the fans of the Nandamuris. The producers of Namo Venkatesa, Ramu, Gopi and Anil, for whom the film is a debut under the banner 14 Reels Entertainment, said that they were happy that their first film has turned to be a blockbuster. They thanked the audience and Venky's fans for the success. While Adhurs has reportedly garnered more box office share than the other film in question, Namo.. has managed to pull family audiences in good numbers. The NTR-starrer, owing to the immen

Income Tax officials raid Ganesh's bungalow

Image
Comedian-turned-producer Ganesh Babu's bungalow was raided by the Income Tax officials evening through night on Thursday. The actor, who turned a producer in 2009, with the film Anjaneyulu, has been in news after the announcement of a big ticket film with Pawan Kalyan in the lead. The news was sought to be kept secret by the officials, but the media thronged Ganesh's residence in no time. The officials, in order to stop the media personnel from entering the residence, locked the gates. Ganesh, who came out for a brief time to the balcony, remarked that it was a mystery if "someone is deliberately doing this to me." Even as the officials continued their raids in the producer's house, another raid took place at Ganesh's farmhouse at Shadnagar. The officials did not reveal what they had seized from the house, but they confiscated some property documents from the farmhouse.

Nikhil, on a roll

Image
Post Kalavar King, actor Nikhil seems to be on a roll. He has reportedly been offered atleast four films, since the release of this flick, which has been judged a so-so film. Though Kalavar.. per se is doing a dull business at the box office, the film has definitely proved lucky for its lead star. After critics called his performance adequate and his presence a saving grace in the film, more directors are knocking his door to narrate their ideas. Nikhil has also okayed a couple of them, sources reveal. In fact, he has a film lined up with a big production house. Though the actor has not spoken to the world about details of who all have offered him films, it is learnt that two films will go on floors in a month's time. He has love entertainer in his kitty. He is also upbeat about a suspense thriller that will go on the floors, possibly, by this month end. The actor, who debuted with Shekar Kammula's Happy Days, has not had much BO success. His performance

Sri-Sri has a new meaning

Image
Ramesh Varma's Sri Sri, which will soon go on floors, stands for Sri Valli-Srinivas. The director of Ride, who has already signed a film with Ravi Teja in the lead (titled Veera), has also this film lined up next. The leads of the film are a suspense for now. It is learnt that the director is planning to announce the names in some days. However, all we know is that the leads will be a popular actor and a well-known actress, who will play Srinivas and Srivalli, respectively. It is learnt that the film will be produced by a big production house. Meanwhile, Veera, to be produced by Tolly To Holly, will go on floors after Ravi Teja completes his work for Don Seenu. Sri-Sri will be an interesting story that will take place between a girl and a boy. It seems that, with two films in a row, Ramesh has become quite popular after the unexpected success of his film Ride. Though his debut, Oka Oorilo, with Tarun in the lead, was a flop, he achieved the much-desired succes

Two Tamil stars to compete in Tolly market

Image
This month, two Tamil actors will compete for their pie in the Telugu film market. While Vishal is coming up with his Khiladi, Vijay is all set to entertain us with his Dopidi. Though Vijay is the biggest star in Kollywood, it is Vishal who is more familiar in Andhra Pradesh. The makers of Dopidi, the dubbed version of Kuruvi, are consciously promoting the film as a Trisha-starrer, while Khiladi's promoters are hoping to win some good openings by banking on Vishal's image (seriously dwindling, though). The Vishal-starrer, in which he is blissfully romancing three female stars, was set to release in February, but got postponed. The actor has not had much success since Pandem Kodi, with his films like Pista doing miserable business at the box office. Vijay, the actor who enjoys immense craze in his home turf, is not as famous as an Ajith, but it seems that the makers are hoping to win with the help of the film's subject and its USP, Trisha. Let's see w

MS Raju's son to debut soon

Image
It is learnt that popular producer MS Raju's son Sumanth Ashwin will make his debut sometime in the middle of this year. In fact, his entry into Tollywood has been waiting to happen, and in 2010, it is finally materialising. The new film starring the producer-son will be launched on the 10th of May. Details of who the director and other technical team/star cast are not yet known. You can only be sure that a passionate filmmaker like Raju is readying a credible script for his son. The debut vehicle of Sumanth will have to have strong box office appeal! Though, of late, it has been observed that Raju has not announced any film with other heroes in the lead, it is now clear that he is preparing the ground for his son's perfect launch. After Maska, which fared average, he has kept low profile. In fact, rumours did rounds in 2008 that Raju was seriously considering his son as the lead in his debut directorial Vaana. It did not happen as per the plans, however.

Don Seenu ropes in Bolly girl

Image
Director Gopichand Malineni has roped in Anjana Sukhani, the Bollywood actress of Jashnn fame, as the second lead actress for his next film Don Seenu. She will understandably play the second lead, while the first one is Shriya, who was signed a couple of days back. The film is currently progressing at a brisk pace. The 31-year old actress has acted in a Kannada film in the year 2009, and this one is her second regional film. Though she debuted in 2002, with the film Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, she has not met with much success, as all her films either bombed at the BO or did not fare too well. She did prove her screen presence in films like Golmaal Returns, but has not got meaty roles in good number. She has appeared in Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi, a popular television show, in recent times. In her latest South Indian outing, which is very important for her, she will serenade Ravi Teja, an actor opposite whom actresses only look oomphier. Hope Anjana achieves her mu

Image
It is known that Prakash Raj is paired with Bhoomika Chawla in a forthcoming film of his, where the two talented actors are playing husband and wife. The film is nearing completion and is geared for a release in a short period of time. Speaking to the media about the movie, Mr. Raj said that, this was a kind of film which came with a useful subject for the society. Saying how he first met the director Tekula Krupakar Reddy because of ace producer Dil Raju, the National Film Awardee said that the forthcoming film tells how a couple should lead their lives together. "I will always like to work in such movies," he declared. The film details how men in today's society look upon their women. In the same vein, the director said that the film tells how a father and a husband have to treat the women. He said that the film will turn out to be a powerful message for them. Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao said that the film shows what the conflict between a husband-wif

It is produced by Chandu on the banner Pinnacle Pictures. The film is set to release on March 19. Natti Kumar is releasing the film world-wide. Made with an inspiration from real life incidents, the story explores the pros and cons within the police department. So, the film throws up two characters who are cops in good positions, but have differences in their ways and thoughts. Police Police juxtaposes these two characters and draws up a story involving the twosome. The film has Brahmaji, Dandapani, Vikram, Ahuthi Prasad and Prasad Babu playing other important roles. Revathi’s first Malayalam film

Image
Revathi is all set to start work on her first feature film in Malayalam as the director. The multi faceted actor-turned-director impressed all as a director with her very first feature film, ‘Mitr-My Friend' which won the Best English Film of the year award at the 49th National film awards. Later Revathi directed ‘Phir Milenge’ in Hindi in 2004, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan and Shilpa Shetty, on the subject of AIDS. Now she is readying her first Malayalam film. Her first in Malayalam is ‘Makal,' which will be one of the films within ‘Kerala Cafe’. ‘Kerala Cafe’ is a Malayalam anthology film produced by Renjith and directed by a team of 10 directors. Revathi says she and Anjali Menon are working on the script and casting. Once the producer says he is ready the shoot will begin. It’s likely that Revathi will announce the film by Vishu in April.

There can’t be a better launch than ‘Jackie’ for her as the film is produced by the first family of Kannada films and she acts opposite Puneeth in her very first film. Saying the star is a wrong choice for the brand, he considers this decision as the biggest fault of the present government. Azhikode thinks this decision is a shocker to the practicing Gandhians and urges everyone in the state to go on for an indefinite Sathyagraha to correct this decision. Meanwhile, adding a new turn to Thilakan controversy, actor Mukesh has come up with his support for Thilakan for certain aspects that the veteran points out about the industry. While speaking to a news channel, Mukesh who is also the vice president of AMMA said that Thilakan's statements were more of a reactionary nature than anything deliberate. However, Mukesh also pointed out that Thilakan must not have talked against the associations which are standing for the
