Knight Riders beat Kings XI by D/L method

Durban, April 21 (IANS) Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Kings XI Punjab by 11 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method in a rain-affected Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Kingsmead here Tuesday. Knight Riders were 79 for one after 9.2 overs when rain interrupted the proceedings for the second time in the day. This is the second time Kings XI lost their match via the D/L method

Tall scores may prove a tall order

THERE'S SOME bad news for the Indian Premier League. The tall scores, which are critical to the success and popularity of the T20 format, will not be easy to come by in South Africa. The low scores in the opening games in South Africa -- including the lowest ever (58 by Rajasthan Royals) in the IPL -- gave indications of what's in store. Adrian Carter, the curator at St George's Park here, confirmed the fears. "I think the par score here would be around 160, and it would go further down in coastal venues like Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London," said the curator. That's quite a climb down from some 200-plus and normal 180-plus scores the league saw in India last time. "We can work on the wicket and make it as flat as possible, but we can't help the weather. It's going to have its effect on the way pitches play." "We are heading into the winters here and it's going to be a fairly difficult task to come up with perfect batsman-o

We lost to the 'genius' of Hayden: Pietersen

Port Elizabeth, April 21 (IANS) Bangalore Royal Challengers' skipper Kevin Pietersen said Matthew Hayden's blazing knock had given them no time to recover in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Chennai Super Kings here Monday. Hayden blasted 65 off just 35 deliveries as Super Kings routed Royal Challengers by 92 runs. 'When he bats like that, it's nothing much that you can do. He is a genius. His knock never allowed us to settle (down). But we did not execute our plans well.' 'The target of 180 was a bit too much for us. But that is the beauty of T20 cricket. We had a dominating win against Rajasthan Royals in the first match and tonight Super Kings had a dominating victory over us. The tournament is open and we will have to compete in the next match,' Pietersen said after the match. Super Kings' captain Mahenddra Singh Dhoni said Hayden set the match for them and Muttiah Muralitahran finished it brilliantly. 'If you get a kind of start l

We have shed the tag of a T20's Test side: Mallya

Port Elizabeth, April 20 (IANS) Bangalore Royal Challengers owner Vijay Mallya said his team has gone through a complete makeover to shed their last year's tag of a 'lethargic Test' side. Mallya said Royal Challengers has made a motivational start to the Indian Premier League here with a crushing victory over defending champions Rajasthan Royals in the first match Saturday. Royal Challengers, who finished seventh in the eight-team Twenty20 tournament in the inaugural edition, beat Rajasthan Royals by a record IPL margin of 75 runs. Mallaya said that inclusion of Kevin Pietersen, Jesse Ryder and others have instilled fresh energy in the team. 'We have got a great start. It was motivational. There has been lot of value addition to the team this year. Kevin Pietersen can bowl, Jesse Ryder bowled in the last match and even Virat Kohli bowled today,' Mallya said during the Royal Challengers second match against Super Kings Monday. 'We realised that without team spiri

6 years after, Nehra returns to Durban with buddy Sehwag

Arrey badi purani baat hai (It's a very old story)," says Ashish Nehra when asked about his Durban connection. "I'm surprised that people still remember me here. I got down at the airport this morning and someone greeted me saying, 'Hi, you are back. We still remember your spell'," he adds with a grin. Four surgical scars on his ankle tell the story of last six years. Ever since that 2003 World Cup game against England, in which he bowled a miraculous spell of six for 23, the lanky left-arm seamer has been living in flashback. Nehra has been on five trips to South Africa for rehabilitation and knows the roads of Johannesburg well. But on Monday, it was an emotional return to Durban. "People have asked me how much I remember of that day. I remember everything - strapping my ankle, icing it, taking pain-killing injections and taking courage from Dada's (Sourav Ganguly) insistence on playing me in the XI," he says. "Coming back here is spe

Short on runs, high on optimism

The black clouds seemed to make the two-hour trip from Cape Town with the teams, and though the sun made a special appearance on Monday, gusty winds and a light drizzle remain a constant in Durban. Welcome to KwaZulu Natal, where Shaun Pollock says "the rains start the moment the lights are switched on". The Mumbai Indians are beaming from ear to ear - they have Pollock, Jonty Rhodes and Praveen Amre, three men in their strategy camp, and opener Sanath Jayasuriya, who have inside information on the conditions in this province. However, there's one man in Tuesday's double-header who, though he may not know as much about the Kingsmead Stadium, carries fond memories of it. It was here that Yuvraj Singh slammed six sixes in an over to add a whole new dimension to his reputation. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar have provided a sedate start to the tournament for the batting camp, and it's now time for big-hitters such as Yuvraj, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Chris

Now, Chennai downsize squad

The Indian Premier League's top two teams last year have dabbled in downsizing for Season 2. Days after champions Rajasthan Royals sent seven players home, including Mohammad Kaif, runners-up Chennai Super Kings have also packed off five cricketers. Unlike the Royals though, the Super Kings haven't dropped any of their stars. Taking the flight back home are S Vidyut, Anirudha Srikkanth, Suresh Kumar, Abhinav Mukund and Napoleon Einstein. Though, Sivaramakrishnan played nine games last year, the rest were mostly confined to the bench. Interestingly, Anirudha happens to be the son of Kris Srikkanth, chairman of the national selection committee and brand ambassador of the Super Kings. Meanwhile, Mukund and Einstein were part of India's under-19 squad that won the junior World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. With the Chennai team signing Andrew Flintoff, George Bailey and star Murali Vijay this season, the axe has fallen on the fringe batsmen in the squad. "I did feel sorry for the f
