Baby got…hips?! Jacked up face with a sideways booty

Image
The morning weird for you all today is of a medical nature and perhaps one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. Generally, if you want to have plastic surgery done you would look around and check some references of the doctor you are planning to use. The surgeon planning to put stuff into your body and change things permanently isn’t where you scrimp me thinks. Apparently, a woman in Miami wanted to go a bit more roundish in the rump area. She heard about a “doctor” that could give her butt more bling for only $700. The “doctor” in question surprisingly wasn’t a doctor. Upon seeing the supposed doctor and witnessing the horror that is that supposed doctors body and then learning that the “doc” had performed the surgery on herself the woman patient still decided to fork over her $700 and the series of injections started. The “doc” didn’t inject anything the FDA would recommend in a million years. The patient ended up getting an injected mix of tire sealant, cement, mineral oil, and s

NOOK Tablet gets unofficial Android Market

Image
Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Tablet has been rooted, allowing the 7-inch $249 slate to run the Android Market among other improvements. Although sideloading Android apps has been left straightforward on the NOOK Tablet, the device ships without full Android Market access; Liliputing has pulled together various guides and methods from the clever modders at Xda-developers that help correct that. Unfortunately, these first-gen hacks aren’t quite one-click processes. Instead, they require that the user have the Android Software Developer Kit installed on their computer, along with the Java developer kit, and then enable adb on the NOOK Tablet so as to carry out the actual rooting process and then copy across and modify the Android Market app itself. Once complete, it hugely increases the number of available apps for the NOOK Tablet, though it’s not quite all of them yet; further modification is required to tweak the filtering system, which prevents some compatible apps from being shown in sea

Android malware: Threat or FUD?

Image
Android faces an exponential growth in mobile malware, according to researchers, with a 472-percent increase in rogue Android Market apps since July 2011. Increasingly complex apps are taking advantage of loopholes in the Android platform’s security to gain root access and grab user-data, Juniper Networks claims, going on to send premium-rate messages unknown to the user or share data covertly with remote hackers. However, while those apps are supposedly proliferating in the Market, it’s unclear how many users are actually impacted. With low-level access, Juniper suggests, malware can begin sending out SMS messages without the user realizing it. Those messages are targeted at premium rate services, with the malware authors making money on each received. If the user doesn’t carefully check their bill each month, they may not notice the cash being sucked out of their account. Spyware, though, still makes up the majority of attacks, according to Juniper’s figures. In those cases, the malw

Blue Wii hits Walmart for Black Friday

Image
Walmart will offer a limited edition blue version of the Nintendo Wii as part of its Black Friday sales promotion this year, it has been revealed, with the new color console priced at $99.96. Set to go on sale at 10pm on Thursday, November 24, according to details screen-grabbed from a CBS commercial and passed to Engadget, the blue Wii has already been offered elsewhere in the world, but this will be its first official debut in the US. Back in October, Nintendo announced the blue special edition as a custom Olympics 2012 model set to commemorate the games set to be held in London, UK. The console – which includes Mario & Sonic and a matching blue Wiimote – would only be offered in Europe, however, with pricing yet to be confirmed. It’s worth noting that Walmart already offers the blue Wii Remote Plus as a separate accessory, priced at $39.96, but currently only sells black and white versions of the Wii console to go with it. We’re guessing this blue Walmart Wii is the same har

Nikon D800 DSLR reportedly leaks

Image
Details of Nikon’s upcoming D800 DSLR have leaked, including photos of the much-anticipated 36-megapixel camera. Said to be smaller and lighter than the Nikon D700, despite offering three times the sensor resolution and a bigger display, the D800 should also deliver better video quality than the D3s according to Nikon Rumors‘ sources, offering capture options at up to 1080p/30/25/24. A 720p/60/30/25/24 option is also on the cards, and there are both CF and SD memory card slots to store that footage to. The autofocus system is said to be identical to the D700 and D3, which presumably means 51-point AF with 3D Focus Tracking, though it’s unclear whether the scene recognition engine – controlling AF, AE, i-TTL flash control and auto white balance – of the older cameras has also been carried across. The images show the D800 with what’s presumably an optional battery-grip fitted, giving the camera the illusion of extra bulk. Going by the bevy of physical controls, Nikon has resisted the urg

My Tech Vice: I Buy Because I Want It, Not Because I Need It

Image
I’m here to make a confession: I buy technology products — from smartphones to tablets to video game consoles — not because I need them, but because I want them. Let me take you on a brief recent history. Earlier this year when Amazon announced the Kindle Fire, it took less than an hour for me to head to the e-retail giant’s site, find the tablet, and pre-order it. I didn’t consider the fact that I have an iPad that I hardly use or that I was spending $200 on a whim. No, all I could think about was getting my hands on the latest and greatest product of the day. I’ve been here before. I bought a second e-reader after I reasoned that the first one I had just wasn’t cutting the mustard (it was), and even though it would have been smarter for me to buy the iPad’s keyboard accessory, I instead decided to buy a MacBook Air because, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. As I look further back at my product purchases over the years, a similar scenario plays out more often than I’d like

US utility sabotage blamed on Russian hackers

Image
Russian hackers may have sabotaged a water pump in what’s being described as the first foreign cyber attack on US utility infrastructure, damaging both hardware and confidence in critical systems. The attack targeted a Springfield, Illinois water utility station on November 8, Reuters reports, using network credentials stolen from an industrial software developer; the pump was apparently remotely activated and burnt out, though redundant systems meant no impact was felt by residents of the town. Nonetheless, the event is being taken seriously by the Illinois Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center, with the US Department of Homeland Security and the FBI both involved in the investigation. Although still early, the teams involved insist there is no cause for ongoing concern, with DHS spokesperson Peter Boogaard arguing that ”there is no credible corroborated data that indicates a risk to critical infrastructure entities or a threat to public safety.” Despite those reassurances, onli

Best Buy slash PlayBook to sub-$200

Image
Best Buy has slashed pricing of the BlackBerry PlayBook, with the entry-level model down to under two hundred dollars as retailers attempt to provoke interest in RIM’s little-loved slate. The 16GB PlayBook is now just $199.99, with the 32GB and 64GB models at $299.99 and, bizarrely, $229.99 respectively. It’s not the first discounted PlayBook pricing we’ve seen, though it is some of the most significant. Earlier this week, Canadian retailers were tipped to be readying considerable discounts ahead of the holidays, and the 7-inch QNX tablet has been the subject of several temporary and promotional cuts almost immediately after it launched. Best Buy’s $300 discount seems to be working, too; the 16GB PlayBook is listed as backordered at time of writing, with the first deliveries of new orders expected to be in 1-2 weeks. We’d probably stump up the extra $30 and opt for the 64GB one at a bargain $230, also backordered, and which is listed as $470 off RIM’s RRP. The PlayBook will be the reci

Windows Phone hack could create Android dual-boot

Image
Enterprising modders are seemingly one step closer to getting Windows Phone 7 devices to dual-boot with Android and other platforms, with Samsung’s Focus being coaxed into running an unofficial bootloader. The handiwork of DFT (Dark Forces Team)’s Cotulla, the hack currently allows the MAGLDR bootloader to run after the Focus’ original bootloader, with the eventual goal being a selection of official and unofficial ROMs to choose from. One obvious possibility is that the aftermarket ROM community could get newer versions of Windows Phone running on the Focus, long after Samsung has given up support for the first-gen device. However, it’s also likely that attentions will also turn to other popular mobile platforms, such as Android. We’ve already seen Android and Windows Phone 7 running on unofficial hardware: the venerable HTC HD2 has been blessed with both Google and Microsoft‘s platforms at different times, and there’s a dual-boot hack out in the wild too. However, efforts to get dual-

Google Confirms no Flash for Ice Cream Sandwich, for the time being

Image
If you lucky owners of the Galaxy Nexus in these first days of its release complete with the first iteration of Ice Cream Sandwich, you’ll notice that you do not have Adobe Flash Player installed, nor do you have access to a download on the Android Market – Google has just confirmed with us that this is normal and that Flash support will only come once Adobe makes the call to update the mobile version for Android 4.0. You currently will not have the ability to load either a new version or one of the older versions of Flash Player for Ice Cream Sandwich until Adobe makes the call to update their app to be compatible with this newest version of Android. Don’t get too frazzled quite yet though, that’s not the whole story. Those of you about to have a heart attack over this would do well to note that it was inevitable as Adobe announced that they’d be axing the mobile version of Flash in favor of HTML5 earlier this month. Then if you’ll go ahead and read what Google has let us know, you’ll

Android 4.0 ICS demo: Facial Recognition, Battery Life, GPU Rendering, and more

Image
Our demo series continues with the Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, in this episode taking a look at Facial Recognition, Notifications, battery life, camera speed, GPU Rendering, and Recent Apps. In this post you’ll find a video featuring Vincent Nguyen who will also end up doing the full review of both the hardware and the software here on SlashGear. When you check this post out, keep in mind that this is one of the first wave of devices otherwise known as the international edition able to work on T-Mobile and AT&T bands. We have yet to see the Verizon version of this device, but everything you see in this video series should essentially be the same situation as that release.

Galaxy Nexus benchmarks show device to be near Galaxy S II

Image
This week and throughout the next we’ll be continuing to explore the many facets of the Galaxy Nexus both inside and out, this newest post showing off the power of the device running this vanilla version of Ice Cream Sandwich with some benchmark tests. You’ll see CF-Bench, Linpack, Quadrant Advanced, and SunSpider (web browser test). Each of the tests run in their own app from the market while SunSpider runs in the native WebKit web browser that comes with the device. Will this newest Samsung device outdo the Galaxy S II, or will it prove to be less of a powerhouse than Samsung’s hottest selling space-themed handset?

Steve Wozniak poses with his new Galaxy Nexus at Google Building 44

Image
It would appear that aside from those here in the United States that dropped a mint on an internationally shippedGalaxy Nexus and those of you living in the UK where they’re already in stores, it’s just the publishers who were amongst the lucky to review the device and none other than Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak who now have Google’s next hero phone in hand. For today, just one day after the UK launch of the Ice Cream Sandwich device, Woz was invited to have a Galaxy Nexus bestowed upon him along with a lovely Android 4.0 t-shirt. And there was much rejoicing. Several Google employees have some lovely photos up on Google+, the first being the portrait orientation photo where you can see the Ice Cream Sandwich shirt the clearest over Wozniak’s arm and the Donut and Android in the background photographed by +Nicolas Roard who is a software engineer working specifically on Android’s web browser. Next it’s +Kirill Grouchnikov who is a user interface engineer who notes that he’s currentl

RED Scarlet camera finally ships to first customer for $9,750

Image
The long talked about RED Scarlet camera, which has been under development for the past two and half years, has finally gone on sale and shipped to its first customer. Cinematographer Tonaci Tran is now the first person to receive the RED Scarlet camera at a price of $9,750. Amazingly, this is actually considered the least expensive camera of its kind. The RED Scarlet is a 4K camera, which means it has the capability of shooting super high-definition at a full 4096 x 2160 resolution at slightly higher than 25 fps. It also shoots 3K resolution at 48fps, 2K resolution at 60fps, and a less usual 1K at 120fps for smooth slow-motion capture. RED has worked hard to keep costs down for the modular 4K camera, but still kept a Super 35-leve sensor that’s typically found in models that are much more expensive. And its Redcode has virtually eliminated any bitstream artifacts when streaming. The camera is capable of streaming up to 50MB/sec of video.

Holga case for iPhone brings special effects lenses

Image
The Holga case brings some retro camera filters to your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. Instead of digital filters as you would get with the Instagram app, the Holga case tacks on a physical wheel of special effects lenses to the back of your iPhone. The wheel looks like a rotary dial and features ten different filters, including a Dual Image Lens that produces two identical images like a 2-way split image filter, a Triple Image Lens that does the same but three ways, and a Quadruple Image Lens again four ways. It also has a 60mm Macro Lens for taking photos roughly 60mm in distance from the lense, a Green Filter, a Red Filter, a Red Filter with a clear heart shape center, and a Yellow and a Blue filter each with a clear circular spot in the center. The Holga iPhone Lens Filter Kit SLFT-IP4 is available now and retails for $29.99. The case it self comes in five different colors of black, white, silver, red, and blue. For examples of what each of the filters would look like, you can visit the Ho

Sony Ericsson’s Vscreen app beams mobile content onto bigger screens

Image
Sony Ericsson has released a beta app for Android devices called Vscreen that lets you easily share the media on your mobile device with a bigger screen. But instead of connecting to a larger display using an HDMI cable or DLNA protocol, the Vscreen simply uses QR codes. Once you download the Vscreen app, you point the browser on your larger screen to the vscreens.com page and scan the on-screen QR code with your smaller Android device from which you would like to share content. This then forms a link between your device and the browser on the larger screen allowing you to easily toss up photos and videos. However, the Vscreen app will only be able to sync your device with a larger screen that’s sharing the same local WiFi network. The app is free and available now at the Android Market and requires Android 2.1 and above.

Lenovo LePad K2 Tegra 3 tablet benchmarks look to take on ASUS

Image
We’re all well aware by now that the first quad-core Android tablet in the world will indeed by the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, complete with NVIDIA Tegra 3 – but here comes the second, a Lenovo device that this week has appeared in benchmark tests showing its upcoming might. What we’ve got so far for specifications on this yet to be formally announced device is a 10.1-inch display, NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-core processor, and indeed the code-name LePad K2. While this may end up becoming the real release name of the tablet, we’ll just have to wait and see, as believe it or not, ASUS still has the only announced and official device out there thus far with Tegra 3 onboard. The benchmark from OpenGL we’re seeing here shows off the fact that this device is running a screen thats a massive 1920 x 1152, just like the Acer Iconia A700 Tab that also remains in the shadows as of yet. We can also see that this device currently runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb, but we must wager a guess that we’re start

Dell’s ultra-thin notebooks with SSDs hit the FCC

Image
Dell apparently has two ultra-thin notebooks getting ready to hit the market, as they’ve turned up this week at the FCC. The notebooks sport super lean bodies and SSD storage drives that suggest they may be in theUltrabooks category to compete with the MacBook Air. But they also manage to squeeze in plenty of ports that should be an advantage. The two notebooks don’t seem to have been announced before. They’re dubbed Dalmore 15 and Dalmore 14 with model numbers P19F and P25G. The FCC diagrams reveal that the backside of the notebooks are about as thick as an Ethernet port, which pegs them at about 15 to 20mm thick. In addition to the Ethernet port, they also feature HDMI, a mini-dsiplay port, as well as a couple USB ports. A SATA Flash label on the notebook reveals that it will use SSD. The frame of the notebooks also feature an interesting design that isn’t seen in any of Dell’s current models, suggesting that this could be part of a completely new line. The backside is flat but then

Windows Phone Marketplace now has more than 40,000 apps

Image
Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace has now reached more than 40,000 apps. It’s a new milestone for the company just following its first anniversary in October when it celebrated hitting 35,000 apps. The data comes from AllAboutWindowsPhone, using their own tracking system and also breaking down the figure into percentages based on app categories. At the time of the report, the Windows Phone Marketplace had about 40,189 apps published. About 10,882 of those apps were published within the last 90 days, while 4,770 apps were published in the last 30 days. And all those apps come from a total of 10,731 different publishers. At this rate, the number of apps could reach 50,000 by late January 2012 and possibly sooner should things look up for the Windows Phone platform. However, the report also notes that the figure differs depending on the market as there are many apps that are specific to a region. Additionally, of the 40,198 apps published, 5,500 of them have either been withdrawn by t

Motorola DROID XYBOARD 8.2 press photo leaked, name appears official

Image
Verizon appear very much to be getting ready to release the next generation of Motorola tablets, one to replacethe original XOOM, this time titled XYBOARD and looking to be situated in portrait position rather than the landscape we saw with the original. This device is set to have an 8.2-inch display, unique to the tablet world, may well have a quad-core processor by the time it’s released more than likely inside 2012, and by the looks of it, this is going to by just as heavy duty as the original and more – look at that fabulous aluminum plate! But let’s talk about the name for a minute – that name is just… interesting. I’d certainly have to agree with the assessment of Evan Blass on PocketNow, he saying that this “Transformer-like” name wont be a fantastic way to access adults looking to have a tablet for professional use. Unless of course this line is mean to take a grab at the young crowd currently right around high-school age, the same folks who fell in love with the undeniably ins

Ice Cream Sandwich Visual Voicemail missing in action, Google responds

Image
Upon the release of the Galaxy Nexus internationally this week complete with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and review units for a select few publishers here in the USA, several points have become clear, the newest being the complete absence of Visual Voicemail, the same feature shown off at the launch in Hong Kong. Of course there are still options to get visual voicemail with 3rd party apps, but what’s come up missing in this out of the box experience with Ice Cream Sandwich is a pre-installed visual voicemail experience. After reaching out to Google on the matter this week we’re being told that the API is there in the guts, it’s just not built up to an application yet. What we’ve been told is that while the code to make visual voicemail work in Ice Cream Sandwich, it’s the developer working with a voicemail provider that needs to take advantage of it. Since we saw Ice Cream Sandwich’s visual voicemail working just fine in Hong Kong at the launch of both the final version of the OS a

Zelda 3DS special edition set for USA release

Image
It is finally time all you lovers of the Zelda series who’ve put off picking up a Nintendo 3DS for long enough, time for the Zelda 25th Anniversary 3DS to hit US shores, complete with black casing, gold accents, and Ocaria of Time 3D right there in the box. Thus far the rumors have been that this would only be an international release – and indeed up until now you’d have had to think about importing one later this month here to the USA, but what we’re hearing today is that both Best Buy and GameStop will be carrying the package come Black Friday. That’s the 25th of November, next week, if you’re keeping track, and we’re guessing you’ll want to get to the store rather early the day before and tent up if you plan on being there in time to grab one. It’s pretty clear that Nintendo doesn’t intend of following Don Reisinger’s advice any time soon in getting out of the portables market, especially since against what we were hearing back in the first few months after release about terrible sa

Air Clicker concept gives your thumb the lens

Image
While its not too often that a purely conceptual design shows up here in our news feed, but when it does, you know it’s going to be fantastically odd – like this Air Clicker here designed by Yeon Su Kim, stripped of all the unnecessary components and connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth, you use your hand to take the photo, no camera required! What you’ve got is two modules: the first fits on your thumb, the other on your forefinger, the thumb piece having an on/off button and a camera lens, the forefinger piece having tension-sensing silicon. Can you guess what comes next? Without the relatively recent invention of the smartphone, none of this would have been possible – and indeed without the invention of several components that aren’t yet a reality, neither will this concept turn into something we can actually use. As you’ll quickly come to understand, the actual working nature of this device takes a back seat to what’s perhaps possible in the future should things like complete
