Fujifilm X-Pro 1 leaks: 16MP, hybrid EVF and interchangeable primes

Image
Fujifilm‘s great gush of digital cameras this morning missed out one gem, the Fujifilm X-Pro 1, an interchangeable lens camera building on the successful X100. Packing a custom 16-megapixel APS-CMOS sensor, according to a prematurely posted press release, along with a new filter array and proprietary EXR processor, the X-Pro 1 will initially be offered with a choice of three Fujinon prime lenses. Those lenses will consist of an 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2.0, a 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4 and a 60mm (90mm equivalent) f/2.4. There’s also what Fujifilm is describing as a “second-generation” hybrid viewfinder for framing shots. French magazine Responsesphoto gives us a glimpse of what exactly the Fujifilm X-Pro 1 looks like, too, thanks to its February issue. It shows an external autofocus sensor and a metal chassis, as well as spilling pricing details: apparently €1,300 ($1,667) for the X-Pro 1 and the 35mm lens, while the other two lenses will sell at €600 ($770) apiece. According

B&N confirms NOOK business split being explored

Image
Barnes & Noble has confirmed it is exploring splitting off its NOOK ereader/tablet business, investigating whether it could “unlock the value” of the ereader platform by running it as a separate endeavor. Rumored yesterday, such a move would see B&N’s publishing business separated from its traditional retail arm. However, the company also admits it “over-estimated” how many monochrome NOOK Simple Touch models it would sell over the holiday period. “We see substantial value in what we’ve built with our NOOK business in only two years, and we believe it’s the right time to investigate our options to unlock that value. In NOOK, we’ve established one of the world’s best retail platforms for the sale of digital copyright content. We have a large and growing installed base of millions of satisfied customers buying digital content from us, and we have a NOOK business that’s growing rapidly year-over-year and should be approximately $1.5 billion in comparable sales this fiscal year.

Broadcom outs 5G WiFi chips for 1.3Gbps wireless

Image
Broadcom has revealed its plans for up to 1.3 Gbps WiFi, with the next-generation of super-speedy wireless allowing you to get further away from your router while still streaming Full HD video. The new Broadcom 802.11ac (5G WiFi) chips deliver up to three times the speed and six times the power efficiency of current-gen 802.11n radios, as well as being smaller thanks to 40nm production processes. That means smartphones, tablets and other gadgets can be smaller too, despite promising backward compatibility with previous WiFi standards. Currently Broadcom has five new wireless chipsets delivering 5G WiFi: the BCM4360, BCM4352, BCM43526 and BCM43516. Each uses the 80MHz channel, as well as beamforming to direct the signal at the recipient rather than simply radiate it out generally. That boosts performance and data reliability, and Broadcom also reckons there are power savings too since data is transferred faster and devices can go into low-power modes more promptly. The four differen

Makers of Steve Jobs Action figure gets the inevitable legal threat

Image
I mentioned earlier in the week that a company called Inicons was showing of a prototype Steve Jobs action figure that was 12-inches tall. The creepy lifelike doll was to come with trademark Jobs clothing and three sets of hands. I wondered at the time how quickly the Apple ninjas would set upon the company. That time has come reports The Telegraph with the Apple legal team reportedly threatening legal action if the company produces the doll. Inicons was hoping to bring the action figure to market in February. Apple is now reportedly telling the doll maker that if the product comes to market, it will sue. The Telegraph reports that the letter sent to Inicons from Apple points to a Chinese law that makes any toy that looks like a company logo, name, appearance or likeness a criminal offense. Iniconis is a Chinese firm, and China is notorious for not always following the letter of the law when it comes to infringement and fake products. We will have to wait and see if Inicons tries t

Acer Iconia Tab A200 hits January 15 for $330

Image
Acer has officially launched the Iconia Tab A200 in the US, the company’s latest Android slate, set to hit shelves on January 15 from $329.99. Announced in Asia last month, the Acer Iconia Tab A200 runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb on a 1GHz Tegra 2 chipset, paired with 8GB or 16GB of storage and a 10-inch 1280 x 800 display. Early adopters are promised an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in February. Measuring in at 10.2 x 6.9 x 0.48-inches and 24.6 ounces, the A200 uses its girth to squeeze in a full-sized USB port that can hook up to a keyboard or mouse, or to external drives. Other ports include microSD and microUSB, while wireless connectivity is the usual array of WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1. No word on 3G options at this stage. Battery life is tipped at up to eight hours, and there’s a front-facing 2.megapixel webcam though no main camera so as to save money. Acer garnishes Honeycomb with its mildly-tweaked UI, including an “Acer Ring” quick-launcher and its Clear.fi DLNA streaming app.

Google TV ditches Intel for ARM

Image
Google TV is jumping from x86 to ARM-based chipsets, in the hope of reducing power consumption, noise and price of the set-top boxes, after the first generation of the platform failed to set the smart TV world alight. Chipset manufacturer Marvell has announced that its ARMADA 1500 HD “Foresight” SoC will be at the heart of the new Google TV STBs, an HD/3D capable chip that can simultaneously decode two 1080p streams in addition to performing SD-to-HD upscaling. “The Google and Marvell teams have been working closely together to bring our combined software and chipset technologies to market to grow the Google TV ecosystem of manufacturers and devices. Marvell-powered Google TV solutions will enable powerful products to be brought to market at attractive prices” Mario Queiroz, VP, Product Management Google TV Perhaps best of all for a living room device, the ARMADA 1500 HD-based boxes will be fanless, using passive cooling systems rather than noisy spinning fans. That should answer o

Most flagged Facebook photos aren’t inappropriate says Facebook

Image
I can only imagine the number of pictures on Facebook that are flagged as inappropriate each day. Facebook is now offering up a bit of detail on all those flagged photos. As it, turns out most of the photos that users flag aren’t inappropriate, rather the majority of the pics are just of unflattering angles or situations. That means that the bulk of the photos users want Facebook to remove simply don’t make them look good, talk about vain. Facebook notes that users upload an average of 250 million photos each day. The intention of the reporting feature is to allow the users to report photos with violence and nudity since Facebook alone can’t patrol that many images. Facebook will pull photos with nudity or violence, but won’t take down a photo just because the person in the photo doesn’t like it. This highlights the fact that just because a picture posted is of you, you don’t necessarily own the rights. Do you think people in the photos posted by others should have the right to for

Volt misses 2011 sales goals

Image
GM has offered up the final sales numbers for 2011 on the Volt. The Volt has had some very high profile issues this year with two examples catching fire after crash testing with the federal government. The exact source of the fires has yet to be pinpointed, and the investigation is still ongoing. Some welded parts near the battery pack are being investigated. The fires and high price of the Volt undoubtedly contributed in part to the fact that GM came in well under its first-year sales goal on the Volt. GM expected to sell 10,000 Volts in 2011 and fell short. The official sales number was 7,671. The best month of sales for the Volt turned out to be December with 1,500 sold. The Volt grabs lots of headlines, but GM sells many more of its other fuel-efficient vehicles. One of those fuel-efficient vehicles is the Sonic, and another is the Cruze. The Sonic saw an increase in sales of 42% in December and Cruze sales increased 54%.

Microsoft’s Nokia smartphone division acquisition tipped imminent

Image
Rumors of Microsoft buying Nokia‘s smartphone division have resurfaced, with claims that the key execs at the firms will meet in Las Vegas imminently to finalize the sale. Steve Ballmer and Andy Lees from Microsoft and Stephen Elop and Kai Oistamo from Nokia plan to transfer the smartphone section over, where it would be run under a new Microsoft-led name not as Nokia, arch insider Eldar Murtazin has claimed today, leaving the Finnish firm pushing a portfolio of dumbphones and would-be smartphone alternatives. “Steve Balmer, Andy Lees and Stephen Elop, Kai Ostamo [sic] will meet in Las Vegas to finalize agreement about Nokia smartphone unit. Bye Nokia” Eldar Murtazin According to Murtazin, Elop will subsequently resign as Nokia CEO sometime this year, while the Nokia smartphone business will make the jump in the second half of the year. Finalizing the deal is supposedly all in Microsoft’s hands, with the company still undecided as to whether it really needs to take on in-house prod

All mobiles phones sold in Chile to be unlocked

Image
Mobile phone fans in Chile received some good news this week when the Department of Telecommunications of Chile, Subtel announced that all mobile phones in the country had to be sold unlocked. The rule went into effect right away and will mean that any phone can be taken to any carrier the user wants. Chile is also moving to make numbers portable as well. The new rule in Chile is even retroactive in a way. It states that any locked mobile phone purchases prior to the January 16 date is to be unlocked by the carrier free of charge. The unlocking seems easy to do. The mobile providers will have to put up a webpage under the ruling that allows the user to enter the IEMI, device model, and a few other tidbits. The phones will then be unlocked from the carrier. I would like to see more countries take this approach. When you buy a phone, it should be able to work on any compatible carrier.
