Winscape virtual windows are cheaper than relocating

Image
Look out of your window: does what you see make you happy? If not, and if you’ve $2,500 to $3,000 to spare, Winscape have the solution. They take two 46-inch Full HD plasma HDTVs, dress them up to look like windows, and then using a hacked Wiimote controller and some nifty software have the on-screen virtual view follow you around as if you really are looking out a real window. Step to the left and you can see more of the vista previously hidden by the frame; step closer and everything gets bigger. You can stand on your tip-toes and look down over the window sill and Winscape will even show you what’s underneath. If you get bored of the standard scene, the software is designed to take 1080p 30fps footage (or better) and display it. Biggest drawback to the system is that it can only display content for one person at a time, and they have to be wearing a specially constructed IR-emitting necklace in order for the Wiimote to track them. Still, if you have a couple of displays, a Mac

Tiny Vodafone 845 Android 2.1 phone spotted

Image
Android devices with 2.8-inch QVGA displays haven’t exactly been flooding the market, but if you’re holding out for an ultra-compact handset running Android 2.1 Eclair then just such a thing may be almost upon us. Freshly leaked to the::unwired, the Vodafone 845 has dualband UMTS/HSPA, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1, along with a 3.2-megapixel camera, but measures a sub-Tattoo 100 x 55 x 13 mm. The 845 hardware is apparently the handiwork of Huawei, with the phone being otherwise known as the Joy. It won’t be the first time we’ve seen a Huawei Android device attempt to take a bite out of the entry-level market; the company are responsible for the T-Mobile Pulse, a budget Android smartphone though with a 3.5-inch touchscreen rather than the Vodafone 845’s compact panel. Like HTC’s recent devices, the 845 uses an optical joystick rather than a trackball or D-pad, flanked by some physical buttons (including a combined Home/Back key). As for the UI, that seems to be some sort of Vodafone 36

Toshiba Android & dual-screen Windows tablets coming

Image
Toshiba have thrown their hat into the tablet ring, promising their own iPad rival and to use Google’s open-source Android platform for at least one such device. According to Jeff Barney, general manager of digital products for Toshiba America, the company are looking at slate form-factor devices with various screen and OS options; one such example is a “dual-screen model running Windows” while another has a single 10-inch display. Prices and specifications, Barney says, will vary, but the idea will be to broaden Toshiba’s appeal rather than to eat into their laptop sales. ”We definitely see a place for the slate, we see there’s a market there” he says, “it’ll be expansive like netbooks, it won’t be cannibalistic … Media consumption on these slates will be the main user activity.” The Android-based tablet would, unsurprisingly, have a cheaper entry point, while the Windows-based dual-display version will be more expensive. While Toshiba themselves don’t suggest as such, the latter s

Vodafone's Sure Signal femtocells see a couple days of outage

Image
Wireless customers around the globe with femtocells securely stowed in their homes might start to take five bars of signal strength for granted, but there are still plenty of gotchas; your internet service could go down, for example, taking your phone with it -- and it turns out that your carrier can inadvertently bring it to its knees on occasion, too. It looks like a whole lot of Vodafone's Sure Signal-branded units in the UK have been acting up the past couple days due to network registration issues; new and existing Sure Signal customers alike have been affected, turning homes back into the barren, 3G-less wastelands they were before the device existed. Most (if not all) of the Sure Signals are now back in action, but considering that the outage lasted a lot longer than a few brief moments, let's hope that the Voda techs behind the scenes learned a lesson or two in the process.

How would you change Motorola's Devour?

Image
Motorola's Devour has somehow managed to get a little lost in the mix, primarily due to the wealth of Androidoptions on America's two main CDMA carriers right now. The design is certainly appealing, particularly to those still averse to virtual keyboards, but it's the Blur user interface that really sets this apart from the Droid. Of course, we didn't exactly find a whole lot to love about the total package (compared to the other Android options, anyway), but that's not to say there's nothing to discuss. On the contrary, actually. Did you plop down a crisp Benjamin to get yourself a Devour? Are you still happy with the decision? How's Blur been treating you? Would you retool any of the hardware / software aspects? Get honest down in comments below, and yes, feel free to consider this the group therapy you've thus far refused to pay good money for.A

Sony Ericsson's Zylo and Spiro offer music, weird names on the cheap

Image
As many smartphone operating systems as Sony Ericsson is actively supporting simultaneously (three, at our latest count), its featurephone business continues to solider on, too -- after all, there's that whole Walkman brand to pimp, right? The latest models to break cover -- the oddly named Spiro and Zylo sliders -- were announced this week with the promise of bringing high-end music capability at an "affordable entry point," and considering the specs, we don't doubt that the company will be able to meet that goal. Starting at the lower end of the range, the Spiro offers a 2 megapixel camera along with a 2.2-inch QVGA display; the Zylo ups the ante with a 3.2 megapixel shooter with geotagging, a 2.6-inch display, 3G, and some advanced audio capabilities. Both models will hit "selected markets" early in the third quarter

Sony Ericsson X10 can do multitouch after all, will get Android 2.1 in September?

Image
So, was all that hubbub for nothing? British retailer mobiles.co.uk -- a wholly-owned subsidiary of giant Carphone Warehouse, for what it's worth -- is claiming a "man on the inside" as saying that the X10 actually can do multitouch after all, despite word from a Sony Ericsson product manager to the contrary. In fact, not only can it do multitouch, but it will do multitouch through a software update in the second half of the year, the source goes on to say. This all ties in nicely with the dude's claim that the X10 will see an official update to Android 2.1 in September, a window that dovetails rather nicely with Sony Ericsson's official line of 2H 2010. Of course, by the time September rolls around, we can only assume that Froyo will be alive and well, so the ultimate question of relevancy for Sony Ericsson's very first Android venture remains to be answered.

Motorola shows off world's first TD-LTE USB dongle

Image
Though frequency division LTE has won the hearts and minds of most of the Western world's carriers, TD-LTE is emerging as a potential force to be reckoned with in the long-term 4G picture on account of its comparably low deployment cost and the fact that it can used in smaller contiguous blocks of spectrum, while still seamlessly handing off to and from FD-LTE airwaves. Motorola -- probably owing in part to its strong presence in China -- seems to be at or near the forefront of TD-LTE development, reinforcing its standing this week with the news that it's developed the world's first USB modem capable of running on compatible networks. Moto's demonstrating an HD video wall, remote monitoring apps, and (naturally) high-speed internet browsing at a TD-LTE showcase in Shanghai, an event that even some North American bigwigs might be paying close attention to. Fragmentation of 4G technology is always a cause for concern, but if this ultimately means we can use spectrum that

Apple files patent application for NFC e-tickets with 'extra benefits'

Image
Apple appears to be casting an eye out to new shores, judging by the latest of its patent applications to go public. Filed in September 2008, this primarily relates to adding bonus digital content to event tickets, whereby swiping your entry pass to, say, a concert or a sports event into an electronic device would result in you gaining access to related goodies from "an online digital content service." Additional claims describe the use of an electronic device (read: iPhone or iPod touch) as the carrier of the (digitized) ticket, allowing the user access to the event itself as well as "at least one other event-related benefit." The whole thing is focused on the use ofnear-field communications as the data transfer method of choice, something that Apple's hardware is not yet equipped to handle. Then again, NFC interaction is also referenced in a separate patent application (from August 2009, see WIPO link below) for peer-to-peer payments, suggesting that Cupertino

Sony Ericsson posts surprise profit from unsurprising handsets

Image
Can it be, did Sony Ericsson just post its first quarterly profit since Q2 2008? Make.Believe it: the fantastically handsome crew from Stockholm is reporting a Q1 2010 net profit of €21 million, besting analysts who were expecting a €128 million loss. Importantly, SE managed to bump the average handset selling price to €134 on 10.5 million sold compared to the 14.5 million sold at an average of €120 a year prior thanks, in part, to the launch of its uneven X10 and buggy Vivaz. For those keeping track, that drops Sony Ericsson's share of global handset sales down from 5% last quarter to around 4% currently. So yeah, slashing head count and closing facilities has earned Sony Ericsson a short-term win on Wall Street. Remains to be seen, however, if they're now spread too thin to continue juggling Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Android with expectations for even more Sony Ericsson supported OSes in the future.

iPhone OS 4 jailbreak released to developers, not you

Image
Be clear on this: if you're not a jailbreak app developer then the redsn0w 0.9.5 beta release is not for you. The iPhone OS 4 jailbreak previously hinted at is for real and it's for devs only so that they can prep their wares for the summer update. Don't worry, it doesn't reveal anything new to Apple and no, it won't work on the iPad -- it's Mac OSX only, iPhone 3G only, and iPhone 4.0 beta 1 only for now. But hey, it's early days, at least you know it's out there and that people smarter than you are tending to things.

"It's hilarious that they call me as South Asian sex symbol" - Sendhil Ramamurthy

Image
He is a man whose initial's letter is same as 'Success' and 'Sincerity'. He is foreign shore's latest export to the 'desi' silver screen. He goes by the name of Sendhil Ramamurthy, the very name who's synonymous with the famous American series 'Heroes'. If the adulations and the compliments for the same are anything to go by, then, boy! You can get a taste of his acting skills in his debut film It's A Wonderful Afterlife , which has been directed by ace director Gurinder Chadha. Satish Sundaresan of Bollywood Hungama caught up with this man for an exclusive interview and came back rather impressed! Ladies and gentlemen, here's presenting Sendhil Ramamurthy! To start with, Sendhil, how did you enter showbiz? Frankly speaking, I entered showbiz just by fluke. I graduated from the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London but studied medicine in Tufts University, Boston. I always wanted to do theatre, for the simpl

Abhishek Bachchan Interrupted - Part 2

Image
On meeting Abhishek Bachchan, you notice that he is so calm and composed that almost all his answers would be to the point and short. But I get a shock of my life that he had almost got the side-A of the recorder full. He has depth, knows what he is talking and makes super sense. He pours his heart out when he wants, gives you so much respect that you sometimes feel you don't deserve and yet slash you apart if you talk the 'wrong' thing. But that's how Abhishek Bachchan is - frank. He doesn't beat around the bush. We like him that way and that is exactly the way he comes across in Part 2 of this exclusive - Abhishek Bachchan Interrupted with Devansh Patel. Now it makes sense why I reached home at 2.30 in the night. Not because of his long answers but because his answers bring out the Abhishek Bachchan we have rarely heard about. Your new name is tweety-pie. Thanks to Twitter, we also know that you love eating frankie. How has twitter helped you to

"Stop punishing my son to settle scores" - Shatrughan Sinha

Image
The scathing reviews of his son's debut film Sadiyaan has left Shatrughan Sinha wondering if his son Luv Sinha is being put through the grinder because of whose son he is. Says the protective father, "It's quite clear that Luv is paying a price for being my son. He isn't being given a chance to make his presence felt. People who have scores to settle with me are coming out to target my boy. It isn't fair." Continues the Shotgun, "Tell me which newcomer has not been awkward in his first film. Why be so harsh with Luv? Does he not deserve a chance just because he is my son?" Shatrughan Sinha comes out in defence against Shekhar Suman's son Adhyayan's accusation that Luv had insulted Suman Sr. Says Sinha, "My son has been brought up well. He knows how to show respect to his elders. Please ask my colleagues Rishi Kapoor, Hema Malini and Rekha who played his parents in Sadiyaan . Has Luv ever been disrespectful to them? So

Check out: Ajay Devgn's new look for Golmaal 3

Image
Golmaal 3 is the entire buzz. And the reason being, it's never-been-seen-before quality that the actors will bring to it. Everyone's going out of their comfort zone and doing something they have never attempted before. Where Kareena Kapoor will play a tomboy, Tushaar is playing the roadside 'Tapoori'; Ajay Devgan on the other hand has now revealed what he is bringing to this party. We had seen the edgy styled Devgan in London Dreams , but what makes this look stand apart, is roughness around the edges. Not only is he now sporting a cropped look, and a diamond stud in his ear but he has also worked on his body and is planning to go all out to flaunt it, John are you listening? What's really caught the attention is a certain tattoo that's doing the rounds, seems like celebrity tattoos are the statement of the season, remember Lara's? Well, Ajay is sporting a tattoo on his neck in this one, a first in Bollywood. No one's ever tried that and

Shahid Kapoor's new bearded look for his film Mausam

Image
There is so much going on with the very popular Kapoor boy that it's almost exhausting. If the upcoming Paathshaala and the next in line Badmaash Company wasn't enough, Shahid is all geared up and looking edgy for his film Mausam that is still being shot. As he runs around for the promotions of Paathshaala and now Badmaash Company , it's hard to miss the beard he has kept. It keeps you on toes, while we wonder which of his looks will suit him. Was it the chocolate boy one which he kept for the longest period of time, was it the neat and clean look in Jab We Met , the hard core rough look he bore in Kaminey or is it this bearded one. Though he is definitely being complimented for this makeover on a social networking site and the Kapoor boy is more than overwhelmed as he replies "p.s thanks for all the compliments on the beard :)" While we know that this new look is definitely for Mausam , it has to be noted that he is playing an Air Force Offic

Jackie comes clean on romantic liaison with Riteish

Image
Jacqueline Fernandez has decided to announce 'enough is enough'. Ever since the promotion of Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai had begun, there were stories being planted around her romantic rendezvous with Riteish Deshmukh. Though she had initially decided to laugh it all away by terming it as 'silly gossip', Jackie is tired of continuous insinuations around that 'special something' brewing between the two. However, what has really got on her are the charges around such stories being deliberately planted to gain extra mileage for the film around its release. Jackie reacts. "After working in two films with Riteish, I was expecting that to happen. I wasn't surprised at all because such stories will come and really, everyone goes through it. However, don't people realise that such stories start rolling out right before the release of every film. Everyone with even limited brains would know that you are only putting two and two together. What i

"I am humbled" - Vivek Oberoi

Image
Prince has taken a good start all over and in the process has shocked the trade as well as industry in general. This 'almost comic book' actioner is not just Vivek Oberoi's biggest ever opener but also third best for Bollywood this year after Shah Rukh Khan's My Name Is Khan and Salman Khan's Veer . In a season which was reeling with failures and only had an occasional Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge or Love Sex Aur Dhokha , a medium and low budget film respectively, enjoying a face saving outing at theatres, a big budget movie like Prince showing sparks of resurgence at the box office has been a welcome sign indeed. Says an obviously excited Vivek Oberoi, "This has been truly humbling. There was a sense of definite positive energy that I could experience before the release of the film. With some terrific promotion preceding the film, I could gauge that there were quite a few waiting to catch Prince in theatres. I am told by trade experts that the fi
