Dev Anand the real ‘action’ hero

Image
B-town upcoming journalist Pathare Prabhu happened to meet the father of his friend cum producer Bharam Vodka, as Bharam was busy narrating his dream project to the current happening Kumar of the tinsel town, Prabhu went straight inside the drawing room and saw Bharam’s father Karam a respected producer of the tinsel town, admiring a portrait of Dev Anand and saying, “Ahhhhh, Mera Hero Dev Anand.” Touching the recently pedicured feet of Karamji, Prabhu asked curiously, “Why are you looking at Dev’s picture so intensely. What’s so exciting about it?” Karamji replied, “It’s always exciting and inspiring to look at Dev. This is a landmark year. It is the 60th year, the diamond jubilee year of Navketan.” “It’s 60th year of Navketan, but why are you so much excited about it. You never worked in Navketan, and Dev never starred in any of your films. What for this excitement?” Prabhu asked. “Diamond jubilee of a production house is a matter of great joy for the entire in

Ritesh to revive his designing skills

Image
Did you know the spirited actor Ritesh Deshmukh has an architectural degree? And he owns an architectural firm since 2000? Well, now that you know, allow let our birdies to share further titbits…. According to the buzz in the circles, the actor has got the chance to design Karan Johar’s new house that is located in Union Park (Bandra). The filmmaker in fact had known the actor for long and said to have been impressed with his interior design work. Moreover, birdies found out that they both have similar tastes and has discussed the plans. But our birdies were not able to catch more of the buzz as Ritesh is said to be bit tight lipped about his work….. Hmmm, we hope he does a good job, like he does on screens…

When Salman lamented over police force

Image
Coming in a new, rough and tough avatar in his brother Arbaaz Khan’s maiden production ‘Dabangg’, Salman Khan is someone to watch out; for his looks and style. Birdies got the latest whiff from sources that the film has taken inspiration from a popular dialogue from the blockbuster ‘Sholay’. They’re the famous lines said by Asrani in the film, that goes, “Aadhe idhar jao, aadhe udhar jao, baaki mere peeche aao”. Incidentally the dialogue of the film was co-written by Salman’s father Salim Khan. And the team of ‘Dabangg’ have changed the dialogue to suit current situation. In Salman’s film, the actor goes out for investigation along with his policemen and then states, “Mote wale iss taraf, patle vale uss taraf, aur jo fit hain wo mere peeche.” Amusingly when he turns back, he finds no one behind and he goes on to say, “Kya ho gaya hai police force ko?” Justifying about the lines, director Abhinav Kashyap explained that they have not lifted the dialogue but have m

Priyanka’s nervous chemistry with Naseeruddin

Image
In Vishal Bharadwaj’s murder thriller ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’, Priyanka Chopra gets to play wife to seven men. While one would have thought that her character in the film is freaky bold and adventurous, ask Priyanka who played the role. For it was not a rosy journey all the way shooting it…. For instance, the actress was quite nervous when it came to shooting romantic scenes with veteran Naseeruddin Shah, who is the oldest of her seven husbands. Incidentally Priyanka had worked with Shah earlier in ‘Asambhav’ (2004). Since then PC had high regard for the actor, so much that she said to have been nervous to do the love sequence with him. Moreover, when Shah returned to the shoot after his brief illness, PC was feeling all the more uneasy. But Naseer put all her fears completely at rest by turning up very energetic and went on inspired her to give their best shot. Priyanka was gung-ho about Shah’s performance and said that her initial apprehensions were done away with t

Aamir’s request to fans

Image
Only two weeks left for the release of his production ‘Peepli Live’, Aamir Khan is feeling restless about the whole thing. First of all, the film features no big stars, which makes Mr. Perfectionist all the more nervous. Not that he has doubt about the film’s setting and concept, but looks like Aamir just believes that whatever he’s giving to audience is different from the usual, commercial masala which stands a fair chance. To put his mind to peace, the actor shared his anxiety on his bolg, “As 13th Aug gets closer, the butterflies in my stomach are really beginning to flutter around. Have lost my appetite and my sleep." He further wrote that he is really depending on “you guys (audiences) this time round for support.” He stressed saying, “This is an especially tough one with no big stars and a film based in a rural background.” Aamir then went on to request, writing, "For those of you living outside India please tell all your friends, neighbours, c

Shazahn Padamsee is intimidated by Ajay Devgn

Image
In Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji , Shazahn Padamsee plays the nice sweet Catholic girl who works in Ajay Devgn's company. Soon the 40-year old character begins to get attracted to the 20-year old girl. Initially, Shazahn whose last co-star was Ranbir Kapoor was intimidated by the thought of working with an actor so much her senior. But Madhur convinced her about the relevance of the age-group in the script. Says Shahzahn, "Initially I was nervous. But I knew I was going to be taken care of. Madhur Bhandarkar is one of the best directors ever. Look at the kind of magic he works with his heroines. When I saw Chandni Bar I was blown. It's the best Hindi film I've seen." The other impediment in Shazahn'a way was that her role requires a lot of dancing. Luckily, Shazahn is equipped to handle that. "After Rocket Singh , I went down South to do two films one in Tamil, the other in Telugu. Both required a lot of Bollywood-styled dancing. So I can manage

Now, Kashyap is all set with his next directorial venture titled That Girl In Yellow Boots , the film which stars Kalki Koelchin and is co-produced by National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC). That Girl In Yellow Boots which in essence is a thriller tracing Ruth's (Kalki Koechlin) search for her father - a man she hardly knew but cannot forget. Desperation drives her to work without a permit, at a massage parlour. Torn between several schisms, Mumbai becomes the alien but yet strangely familiar backdrop for Ruth's quest. She struggles to find her independence and space even as she is sucked deeper into the labyrinthine politics of the city's underbelly. A city that feeds on her misery, a love that eludes her and above all, a devastating truth that she must encounter. And everyone wants a piece of her. But what's interesting is the fact that it has been selected for

Shilpa Shetty to be brand ambassador of Pantene-Pro V shampoo

Image

Sources close to ApnaDesi , added yet another fodder to our 'Breaking News' list by informing us that Shilpa now joins the ranks of Katrina Kaif, Sushmita Sen and likes, by becoming the brand ambassador of the 'yet-to-be-relaunched' Pantene Pro-V shampoo. Dibakar Banerjee to team up with Ekta Kapoor again for love story

Image
Dibakar Banerjee left on Tuesday for the Melbourne International Film Festival where Love Sex Aur Dhokha is being screened in a special section called 'Not Quite Hollywood', he regrets not having his producer Ekta Kapoor along. Immersed in the release of her new film Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai , Ekta has regrettably given the a honour a miss. But Dibakar has a very special gift for his producer. A new love story written specially for Ekta's Balaji Films, presented to her as a belated birthday present (Ekta turned a year older on June 7). Irresistible is how Dibakar Banerjee describes his collaboration with Ekta Kapoor. After the luminously lauded LSD , the unlikely twosome Dibakar and Ekta are all set to come together again for what promises to be the most intense love story of 2011. At home with his new adoptive daughter Ira, Dibakar , now in domesticated and mellow frame of mind has been quietly penning the love story for his demanding producer. Says

Emotional Atayachar Movie Preview

Image
The Film - Emotional Atayachar, is a ROAD THRILLER WITH BLACK HUMOUR. It is an ensemble film set on the deserted highway between Mumbai and Goa and revolves around incidents that take place in one night to four sets of travelers. It is essentially a dark film, in which, each character is an anti-hero who has a dark side. The real HERO of the film is the mysterious interconnection between these stories that unfolds in a non-linear format. Each story varies from the other in its humour, flavour and content but is driven by more or less a similar motive - money.

Check out: Car crash sequence in SRK's Ra.One

Image
A straight question first. Is there anyone out there who can revoke the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor from driving? Well, if you are Shah Rukh Khan, you can! Well, that's what the King Khan tweeted with this picture. No prizes for guessing that this is a shot from the heavy duty action scene being shot in London for Ra.One . And from what we make of it, Kareena, is part of this scene in the film. Well, whatever be the case, SRK jokingly said, 'Not allowing Kareena to drive anymore...license revoke national & international'. Looking at the stills from the movie set of Ra. One , it seems that SRK surely is making the biggest action film seen in Bollywood till date.

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai

Image
It's the way he looks at the camera. Almost as if it doesn't exist. Ajay Devgn as Sultan Mirza is NOT Haji Mastan, please note. He's just this Robin Hood in the 1970s who happened to be a smuggler and who at some point in the taut plot, locks horns with a junior recruit who, please note, is NOT Dawood Ibrahim. So who, in the name of immoral crime and haphazard policing, are these two men? So stylishly masculine, so sweaty in their realism and so menacing in their demeanour and complete denial of the existent morality they remind you of the anti-social heroes from Sam Peckinpah's Westerns? Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai takes us back to the beginnings of gangsterism in Mumbai. Milan Luthria excels in creating smouldering combustive stress between two mean menacing men…Remember Devgn(who back then was Devgan, just as Mumbai was Bombay when the film under review unfolds) and Saif Ali Khan in Luthria's Kachche Dhaage and on a more satirical note, John

New Facebook Beta for webOS (v1.2.30) adds landscape viewing, inline comments

Image
A few iterations beyond the last time we checked in, the Palm webOS Facebook app is now up to beta version 1.2.30. New features this time around include landscape viewing, improved photo tagging, and the ability to clear all notifications by selecting view all, then using a back gesture to exit the menu. Other changes that are more immediately noticeable are the news feed dropdown menu option (before & after picture after the break) which should be quite useful for those following our tips on managing your Facebook friends, plus the ability to see comments directly in the news feed, instead of just a number indicating how many there are. Check Preware or hit link below to download the latest version, if you're stuck on 1.2.5, just use the update feature on your phone and it should find the latest version.

Vodafone 360 LiMo handsets are no more, probably not missed by many

Image
We can't say we didn't see this coming, but Vodafone's finally put its bespoke 360 phones out of misery. The reason? To focus on making its 360 services -- mainly social networking integration and an app store -- "available on as many devices as we can as soon as we can." Sounds a bit over the top (like Sony Ericsson bundlingPlayNow with Android), but regardless of the implementation, 'tis likely a way of reflecting the lack of adoption for these Samsung LiMo handsets. A real shame, we tell ya. We don't blame Vodafone -- times is hard with other big-name mobile platforms competing with their own built-in services -- plus the 360 branding never really extended beyond the H1 and M1, let alone the now-cancelled H2. But hey, at least that's one less category for the store assistant to shower you with, right?

Modu's T-Phone captured in the wild chilling with Android?

Image
Look everyone, it's the littlest handset come to deliver Android cheer. Last month we got word that Modu was working on a touchscreen device dubbed the T-Phone, featuring full 3G and microSD expansion, also referred to as the Modu 2. Now we have video of what looks to be the same phone out in the wild, running an early version of Android (possibly 1.6) and looking rather fit next to an iPhone and an HTC G2 . Curiously, this is said to be lacking 3G data entirely, only pulling data over WiFi, but we have to think that's just an issue with this prototype and not something that will be a feature of the retail release. It also sports FM tuning and, curiously, a stylus -- resistive ahoy? We'll have to wait and see.

iPod touch becomes iPhone using Yosion's Apple Peel 520?

Image
Oh sure, VoIP on the iPod touch is hardly breaking news these days, but what if you could actually slap on a regular SIM card and make calls on said device? That's what Yosion's appropriately named Apple Peel 520 claims to do. Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, this adapter not only offers voice calling and text messaging (presumably requiring a jailbroken iPod touch for the apps; GPRS not possible yet), but it also doubles up as an 800mAh battery and provides 4.5 hours of call time or 120 hours of standby juice. We're told this cheeky hack's coming out in China as early as this week for somewhere between ¥300 ($44) and ¥500 ($74), although the lack of an official website, full spec sheet or compatibility list means we'll have to remain skeptical with this potentially vaporware company. Maybe the demo video after the break will keep us believing.

Sharp microchip enables dual-screen smartphones, e-readers and netbooks

Image
Judging by the fact that our lovely planet is home to the Libretto W100 , the Kno, Onkyo DX and oodles ofprototypes that utilize twin panels rather than a panel and a keyboard, Sharp's newest microchip is likely to draw some serious industry attention. Improving on an idea that began in 2008, the company has recently shown off a new chip (dubbed LR388G9) that can control two mobile LCDs and can simultaneously display a pair of different 1,024 x 480 pixel clips on a pair of screens; moreover, it can output full 1080p to any source connected via HDMI. Since '08, Sharp has increased memory capacity from 16Mbits to 32Mbits while boosting the image processing speed, and the company now intends to hawk this new guy to outfits who manufacture smartphones, e-readers, digital photo frames and even netbooks. If all goes well, the chip will ship within a 261-pin WFBGA package this September, with volume pricing pegged at around ¥2,400 ($27).

LG's Application Store launches in places you don't live for devices you don't care about

Image
LG's official Application Store -- not to be confused with an App Store , App World, or App Catalog -- just went beta is 23 countries with the aim of serving up 4,000 apps to 33 countries (including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain) by the end of the year. Sorry US netizens, you're seemingly out of luck for 2010. It launches with significantly less than 4,000 apps today (about 3,000) targeting LG feature and smartphones in countries that you, dear reader, likely don't care about. Oh, did we tell you that it's launching without any Android apps? Those won't arrive until sometime later this year.

Android 2.2 upgrade for Droid X may already be trickling out, other Droids shortly?

Image
We've already gathered that Verizon, Moto, and HTC all seem to be pretty well committed to bumping most of their Droid models to Froyo (as well they should), but things are starting to get real -- really real. First off, we've been fed a shot of a tipster's Droid X that has apparently already been blessed with 2.2 over the air; the baseband version is a tick older than the one in a shot leaked over on My Droid Life , but it's anyone's guess how Motorola is staging this and what the final gold binary really contains. We've also seen a 2.2 ROM for the Droid Incredible leak recently (and the Droid before that), so uncorroborated rumors we're seeing that three of the four retail Droids will be getting 2.2 by the 15th of next month aren't necessarily crazy. Remember: think positive thoughts.

AT&T claims it will be 'the premier carrier' for Windows Phone 7

Image
Without question, AT&T's wireless growth these past few years has been largely based on iPhone -- and with apparently good reason, if you look at the numbers. As far as other platforms go, however, it's not been as rosy.Android's relation with the carrier, for example, is a story woven with years of hesitation, some questionable releases, and a rival that's fully embraced it to notable success (releases like the Captivate and Streak suggest a stronger future). So with all that in mind, what we're hearing from AT&T in the wake of Windows Phone 7 is decidedly more committal. Here's what a spokesperson told PC World this week: "We'll be the premier carrier for Windows Phone 7" (emphasis ours). Strong words, but we still haven't heard concrete plans from anyone, including Microsoft, on what's going on with the release. Whispers care of our friend Michael Gartenberg suggest AT&T has "signed up for 8 million" phones and ou

Apple iOS 4.1 beta 2 now available for developers

Image
Developers, developers, developers: Apple is now seeding the second iteration of the iOS 4.1 beta your way. It's been just shy of two weeks since beta 1 hit the scene, which is about on par with the pace of revisions for previous beta releases. We haven't had a chance yet to dive in and see what changes are afoot, but we're downloading now and will be sure to let you know if we notice anything.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G turns up on Cincinnati Bell

Image
Wondering what ever happened to the BlackBerry Pearl 3G that made its debut way back in April and then all but disappeared? Well, we've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you can now actually buy one in the US. The bad news is that it's seemingly only available on Cincinnati Bell at the moment. If that happens to be your carrier of choice, however, you can get your order in right now for $99.99 on a two-year contract, or simply snag the slim, SureType device outright for $349.99. Still no word on when other carriers will be getting the phone but, if the FCC is any indication, it should be headed elsewhere sooner or later.

RIM and AT&T event next Tuesday -- BlackBerry slider and OS 6 en route?

Image
Well well, what's this? We just got an invite to a joint RIM / AT&T event next Tuesday, and we'd guess that means we're about to see the official unveiling of the well-leaked BlackBerry 9800 slider with a side dish ofBlackBerry OS 6. Either that, or RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis is going to explain how working two-way Gmail sync is a real problem that affects every smartphone and give us a tour of RIM's top-secret email integration labs, but yeah -- we've got our bets on new hardware. We'll obviously be there live covering every detail, so make sure to tune in!

Latest BlackBerry 6 preview proves that the more things change...

Image
To say RIM has a lot riding on BlackBerry 6 is an understatement. With new kids on the block like Android andiOS stepping in with lustworthy apps and attractive UIs, the BlackBerrys have been sitting in a corner BBMing everyone else at the party trying to convince them of its sustained utility. Regardless, the latest tease on the BlackBerry Blogs shows off some of the "fresh, but familiar" elements that are getting polished in the jump from OS 5 to OS 6. While some features do have us intrigued -- its implementation of universal search, for example -- other headlining changes to the otherwise staid homescreen have us begging for more. New "views," toggled from a space right under the notification bar, are essentially glorified folders, and the "quick access area" is much like the functionality offered by years-old "Today"-style themes for the handset. Don't get us wrong, the refinements definitely help, but at the end of the day we just hop

Dell Streak retailing for $299 with contract, $549 without; Dell Aero gets launch deets as well

Image
So, Dell still won't say when it will actually start selling and shipping the Streak in the US, but it did clear up a bit of confusion. First off, folks who register with the Streak pre-sale on Dell.com between July 20th and July 27th (yeah, today is the last day) get first access at ordering the phone. Pre-sale-ers will get an email link to buy the phone today, with the handset priced at $299.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, or $549.99 without. Meanwhile, Dell is being even more forthcoming in the Aero. It'll be available on August 9th for $99.99 with a contract and $299.99 without. So, are you ready for Dell to be a US phone manufacturer? Have you braced yourself? Because the time is at hand.a

Lumigon announces unveiling party for first smartphone, invites everyone on Facebook

Image
Yes, you're invited too. Lumigon wowed us with some simple, sophisticated looking handset renders way back in February, the S1 and the T1, promising things like HDMI output and Android 2.1 -- wild things back then. Just five months on and those features sound a little more pedestrian, so we're wondering how it will stack up when the T1 is finally unveiled in the flesh in another three months, on October 20. It'll be a wild night when the Scandinavian Lumigon crew lets loose its keyboard-free smartphone upon the denizens of Copenhagen. Will any Dane be safe?

Google Maps for Android updated to 4.4, adds dedicated 'Places' for searching nearby

Image
Ready to suck down your sixth Google Maps for Android update in the past six months? Good. Version 4.4 has just been shoved out into the bright, hopeful world that we call home, with this one bringing about an easier way to find places around you. With the update will come an entirely new logo, as a dedicated 'Places' icon allows users to quickly look up nearby places in a Yelp-esque manner. If you tend to search for similar things regardless of where you are, you can load up your own personalized categories to make finding frequent searches that much easier (think "gas station" or "In N Out"). There's also Place Pages, which now shows the operating hours of listed businesses, compass direction and distance from your location. It's available now for allAndroid phones using v1.6 or newer, and if you're rocking a BlackBerry

Pour one out: T-Mobile G1 no longer for sale

Image
And just like that, the T-Mobile G1 is no more. A quick stock check at T-Mobile USA, Amazon, and a few other retailers confirms that the world's first Android handset is no longer for sale, marking the end of an era. Of course, it's been nearly two years since we first saw the G1, and its 528MHz Qualcomm processor and 320 x 480 3.2-inch display have been long since outclassed by the recent crop of high-end Android hardware, but we're still feeling a little nostalgic. They grow up so fast, don't they? Take a pause, take a sip, and let's look back on the original of the species.

Monsoon Vulkano all-in-one DVR/placeshifting/media streaming box ready for preorder, ships August 10

Image
Monsoon -- after taking advantage of a few delays since our initial hands-on by adjusting the name and pricing -- is finally ready to show off the followup to its HAVA line of placeshifting media streamers, the Vulkano. Integrating a video processor and local storage into its slim frame, the Vulkano accepts HD video over its analog inputs for recording and live streaming to other devices (PC, Mac, iPhone/iPad, Blackberry and Android players will be available at launch, with a Symbian version on the way) or it can convert recordings locally for them to be downloaded over WiFi or 3G and stored on those devices for offline viewing. Remote scheduling and channel changing functionality (controlling connected set-top boxes via IR blaster) isn't a shocking new feature, but this goes a step further by bringing internet videos to your TV (YouTube, local UPnP devices) Boxee and Popbox style, and other big names like Hulu, Netflix, Google TV , Amazon Yahoo! Widgets and a full HTML browser are

Dell shows off Android 2.1 running on the Streak, still planning to make it to Froyo

Image
Dell's Kevin Andrew answered a few questions about the Streak in a new "vlog" on YouTube, and it's a mixture of encouragement and confusion. On the good side, Kevin showed off Android 2.1 up and running on the phone / tablet / lady-killer. It looks just like 2.1, of course, but with Dell's customizations still riding atop it. Oddly, while showing off 2.1, Kevin reassures us that Dell is still planning to go to Froyo (2.2), which is reiterated by the text below the video, with no clarification if 2.1 will actually be released as an intermediate measure. Either way we don't have a timeline, which is pretty much the same tune we hear with every Android handset. In other news, Dell is planning to launch the cherry red version of the streak "shortly" after the international launch of the graphite model -- which might be as soon as tomorrow (Dell's site still says "late July," but they just wrapped up a 24 hour pre-sale and said to check bac
