Wilson Louis talks about his 'creature horror film' - Kaalo

Image
He is someone who has made up his mind that it is going to be only horror films for him. Whether it is first film Ho Sakta Hai , his subsequent release Mallika , his ready film Ghat - The Hill Station , his in-progress Shout or his Friday's release Kaalo - each of his outings has belonged to horror genre. As India's first ever day-horror flick, Kaalo , which has a 'unknown and unnamed creature' as the central protagonist gets ready to release, Wilson Louis talks about what fascinates him to pick up the horror genre time and again. Here is presenting Part I of the director's cut, in his own words. Why horror? One of the reasons that horror has appealed to me is that it's an awesome amount of fun. I mean, directing sequences that have a very clear and concise goal to scare the audience, or to take the audience on a journey of suspense. My personality is sort of trial and error and I do carry "everything as a learning experience" kind of a

Does Mere Brother Ki Dulhan have a Bollywood inspiration?

Image
In a career that has been pretty much on and off since her Hazaron Khawaishen Aisi days, Chitrangda took a bold step of working in a film that defied stereotypes. The movie in question was Sorry Bhai which had released exactly two years ago and though not many saw the film, the fact remains that this Onir directed film was way ahead of its times, especially for Bollywood audience. However, one may well be seeing the film in a different avtar in 2011 when Katrina Kaif's Mere Brother Ki Dulhan arrives in theatres. Reason being that it is difficult to ignore the similarity of the film's basic plot - that of Imran Khan falling in love with his brother's (Ali Zafar of Tere Bin Laden fame) dulhan (Katrina Kaif). Says a film observer, "It is surprising that the makers of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan have actually released the synopsis so early when the film would release only in mid-2011. Were they led to believe that audience won't be able to catch the sim

Reflections - Is the young brigade open for challenge?

Image
In one of my recent conversations with Ajay Devgn, he made a remark in a lighter tone stating - '......par kuch bhi kaho lekin industry toh buddhe hi chala rahe hain'. He said that in response to my query around men like him, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan being all 40+ in age and still being the ones who not just had the maximum films in hand between them but were also the ones who could be entrusted with getting a good opening at the box office, more often than not. It was a comment made in light humour but really set me thinking. 'Isn't he actually right?' 'Isn't it actually a fact that the youngsters have been having a rather uncertain run despite multiple chances? 'Isn't it a fact that these 40 plus gentlemen are at least ensuring an opening at the box office (regardless of their overall run), something which can't be said for so many others out there?' And there I was, sitting do

Neil supports 'Save the Tiger' campaign

Image
Tigers are the pride of India but with their dwindling numbers, Bollywood celebs are not far away pledging their support to saving them. Earlier it was none other than Amitabh Bachchan who took one small step by pledging his support to 'Save the Tiger' campaign. Now we have the young actor Neil Nitin Mukesh who is also supporting the cause, in a unique way. Neil will be auctioning some of the photographs that he has shot and the proceeds of the same will go to 'Save the Tiger' campaign. Neil recently tweeted, "I'll be donating a photograph clicked by me of the TIGER. Do bid for it. Every penny goes for a very noble cause. Thank you!" If that wasn't enough, the first of the photographs that was sold went for $2500. "The photograph sold for 2500 dollars.Thank you MR SREEDHAR of VITAL SPRINGS for this kind noble gesture. Its for a good cause. SAVE THE TIGER," tweeted Neil.

Kanti Shah's next titled Sheila Ki Jawani

Image
This is what they say 'Behti Ganga mein haath dhona'. On one hand, where Farah Khan and gang have spent millions of rupees and sleepless nights to perfect the song ' Sheila Ki Jawani ', on the other hand is the filmmaker Kanti Shah, whose last film Rape was 'inspired' by the Shiney Ahuja 'rape' case. Kanti Shah, for starters, also happens to be the undisputed baadshah of C-grade films in Bollywood. This time round, Kanti has gone ahead and has named his film Sheila Ki Jawani . While the film does not boast of any known names, the posters of the same have been made (read 'designed') so sleazy and the title so catchy that you can't ignore it. Shah has no qualms in admitting that the film's title was 'inspired' by the TMK 's hit song and that he 'wrapped' up (no pun intended there) the film in 12 days flat! Wait... there's more! While Kanti states that his story idea is original, the film also stars ..

Dia, Zayed and Sahil on their production house 'Born Free'

Image
A five way conference - Now this was a first for me. But then it was fun for sure as it was imperative that there is a joint conversation that happens with the three founders of a newly launched production house - 'Born Free'. So here I was, talking to Dia Mirza, Zayed Khan and Sahil Sangha, all relaxing in their respective homes on a 'cool Mumbai afternoon on Sunday' (in their own words) with dear friend Monika helping us all get together on a conference call and ensuring a seamless conversation. A round of congratulatory messages flow and the trio get talking. Dia - 'Born Free' has come into existence because all three of us are passionate about cinema and want to make good films. I think what makes this synergy special is the fact that here there are three young individuals who have decided to form a company together because in principal their ideologies are the same. For me, what makes this special is that you we are three people from differ

"I am sure SRK wishes well for Farah and me" - Akshay Kumar

Image
It has been close to a year since Farah Khan decided to move on from her professional association with Shah Rukh Khan and approach Akshay Kumar to play the central protagonist in her third film as a director, Tees Maar Khan . However, the question that continues to haunt her is till date is about her 'split' with the man who worked in her first two films - Main Hoon Naa and Om Shanti Om . Meanwhile, there has always been an ongoing speculation around how Akshay Kumar reacted when Farah approached her for the film. It was a known fact that when Farah and Shirish were planning to make Tees Maar Khan together, they had Shah Rukh Khan in mind. However, one fine day they approached Akshay. How did the conversation go like? Says Akshay with a straight face, "It went something like 'Akshay, I am going to be honest with you. Shah Rukh unfortunately couldn't give us dates but it would be an honour if you would like to make this movie with us. Your characte

Check Out: SRK, Rani and Arjun perform live in Dhaka

Image
Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Arjun Rampal and Eesha Koppikar were recently in Dhaka for a concert to woo the audience with the typical Bollywood dance and music. The entire performance was held at the Army Stadium to a packed audience. While SRK arrived in Dhaka on Friday afternoon, he was joined by wife Gauri and his kids later on. We came across these images of King Khan, Rani and Arjun performing live and seems like they did set the stage ablaze with a power packed performance while the audience were guaranteed left wanting more. "Turning 30 has lot of elements of a normal 'chic flick'" - Purab Kohli

Image
To hear Purab Kohli talk, however, you'd feel that he has got the wrong part. He is thirty plus and then he delivers, "Gul Panag is a very attractive woman. You can make out from the attention that she got in Delhi." Then he laughs and seriously talks about his attractive co-star. Two years ago, he was sporting one of the best beards in Rock On . It's almost 2011 and now the beard is no more. But what remains is his mad female following. Heartthrob is his middle name. Professionally, while some great actors become complacent with success, Purab, according to many directors, is still hungry, still 'excited to do something good' and even if Turning 30 is more about Gul Panag, he wants to prove that a supporting role is worth supporting a film, in more ways than just one. In person, Purab is warm and disarming. He's firm in his refusal to discuss what he doesn't want to and yet he's generous elsewhere. He is still delighting to talk abo

"Rakht Charitra - 2 was never meant to be a film for all tastes" - Suriya

Image
The never-say-die Ram Gopal Varma is not about to give up that easily. Barely a week after the debacle of Suriya's Hindi launch Rakht Charitra - 2 , the indefatigable Ramu has already decided to go ahead with another film as a proper launch for the Southern superstar in Hindi, this time a more conventional romantic-action drama. The blame game has begun. Apparently, the people behind Rakht Charitra - 2 (RC2) feel the Southern sensation Suriya didn't give the film that promotional pitch it required either in Mumbai or in Chennai with the result that RC2 has bombed in both Hindi and Suriya's home-language Tamil. The soft-spoken Suriya defends himself manfully. "Over here (in Tamil cinema) we don't really go all-out to promote and market our films the way they do in Bollywood. You could say our marketing is more subtle. I don't go out and sell any of my films to the audience. However, for Rakht Charitra - 2 , I did make an effort to do more publi

Subhash K. Jha speaks about No Problem

Image
The bad news is that good films are not doing well. But the better news is that bad films are also being rejected. No Problem , if we must talk about it, is no better or worse than all the other, ha ha, comedies that have come and groaned. A series of wildly improbable characters and ideas strung together in sequences of flabbergasting haphazardness, this is the sort of comic romp where the laughter is lost in transit. The credits boast of four writers. But there is no rhyme in the crime no logic in the laughter. Just fasten your seat belts and let Anees Bazmi, a fine writer when given better circumstances, take you for a ride. The film opens with Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna playing two con men Yash and Raj (Yash-Raj, get it? ha ha) rescuing a baby gorilla from the dickey of Paresh Rawal's car. The baby gorilla and its grateful parents show up in the climax where all the male characters (approximately 33 at last count) are dressed as Sardarjis to sing a song

Check out: Genelia and John on the sets of Kaakha Kaakha remake

Image
The bubbly-cious Genelia D'Souza is back in action. The actress recently signed the Hindi remake of the Tamil hit film Kaakha Kaakha . This is one film that has been in the news for quite sometime now as it will be an out and out masala action film. Produced by Vipul Shah, the film stars John Abraham in lead role and is directed by Nishikant Kamat. Genelia tweeted her pic with John from the sets of the film saying, "On my way 2 Malshet Ghat, shooting for Vipul Shahs film with John. So, excited to join the team, will try n post some pics". Looking forward to that Genelia...

"I couldn't understand the way Ranveer was acting" - Anushka Sharma

Image
With just her third film, Anushka Sharma has graduated to being the senior most of the lot. While in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi , she worked with Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra, in Badmaash Company she paired up with Shahid Kapoor though the director was a newcomer (Parmeet Sethi). Now in Band Baaja Baaraat , not just her director is a first timer (Maneesh Sharma) but also her co-star (Ranveer Singh), hence making her the most experienced of all. However, Anushka Sharma takes the compliment lightly as she catches up with Joginder Tuteja for this exclusive interview. Being a senior member of the film must have given you some sort of ego boost, right? Arrey nahi, not at all (smiles). I didn't want to be on the sets and behave that 'yaar mujhe dekho, main toh kitni achchi hoon, mujhse sab maloom hai, I am Ms. Know-all'. Nothing of that sort happened and I never got such a feeling. Maneesh is a very good friend of mine and we go a long way back to Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

The film releases on 28th January, 2011. So, now, all the eyes are on the said date!
