HTC Edge images leaked, quad-core smartphone in the flesh

Image
In what appears to be images of a very real smartphone by the name of HTC Edge, we may well be seeing the first quad-core handset to hit the streets in the coming months. What this device represents is not only one of the first quad-core mobile devices to arrive in the world, but the first quad-core device to arrive for HTC as a manufacturer. One question that immediately comes to mind is how an HTC device would be running a quad-core chip when historically they’ve only used Qualcomm in the past and said processor manufacturer doesn’t yet have an announced quad-core chip in the works – let’s see how this all adds up. Inside you’ll find that the device has 720p resolution on its display, 1GB of RAM, and a back-facing 8-megapixel camera to keep it up to date. This camera is said to be a 28-millimeter f/2.2 lens toting shooter with some sort of backlit feature or another. This device will have a 4.7-inch display and will be thick as pie at just over 10 millimeters, with what PocketNow

ASUS Sabertooth X79 motherboard rundown

Image
It’s been revealed by ASUS that their next big platform will be what you see before you here, the Sabertooth X79, seen here in its nude motherboard state. Inside you’ll find the upcoming Intel X79 chipset sitting nicely in this TUF series motherboard, the whole thing made to be reliable and a “long term investment” by the folks as ASUS. Military grade hardware for the elements and power galore – let’s have a look at what we’ve got going here. The images you see in this post come from Matt Black at Tech in Style, photographed aside information on the tablet we’re also presenting to you here. What you see here is a Thermal Armour sitting near the heatsink and rear I/O area, while two fans keep the whole situation cool – you’ll just see one in this setup, the other optional for the rear I/O. So your CPU DIGI+ Power Control VRMs and chipset will be chilling while your I/O is connected via a set of fins to your CPU digital VRMs – push that heat out! DIGI+ VRMs hardware has been extende

NOOK Tablet hands-on roundup from around the web

Image
At an event that was very clearly aimed directly at the Kindle Fire this week, Barnes & Noble revealed their next-generation NOOK, named the NOOK Tablet and looking just as lovely as the original NOOK Color. So similar, in fact, that it’s essentially the same design save the innards which are twice as powerful and the TINY change in chassis that makes it ever so slightly lighter and thinner. Below have a look at some hands-on accounts with the device from around the web. David Carnoy of CNet has for the most part seen no distinct advantage in the NOOK Tablet over the Kindle Fire, the device’s primary opponent, in anything other than the storage, which he speaks about thusly: Storage: This is a big one. Even before I lay a finger on the Kindle Fire, its 8GB, non-expandable storage capacity gave me pause. (Of that 8GB, only 6GB is user accessible.) By doubling to 16GB out of the gate–and offering the ability to add up to 32GB additional storage via microSD–the Nook Tablet makes me le

NOOK Tablet available for pre-order now, demo videos released

Image
This week we’ve gotten our first glimpse of the Barnes and Noble next-generation e-reader and multimedia device, the NOOK Tablet, and now on the day of announcement it’s been revealed that the tablet is already up for pre-order. Below what we’ve got also is a couple of Barnes & Noble created presentation videos for the NOOK Tablet, both a 360 degree view of the device and a tour of the device by everyone’s favorite B&N spokesperson, Kate! Have a peek! The NOOK Tablet is a reader’s tablet, as Barnes and Noble say, and is made for text-based products for the most part. On the other hand, you can also watch 1080p video from Netflix and Hulu plus amongst other sources, each of these available right out of the box. Have a look at what the device is comprised of here in this 360 video below. Also note that for the most part, this is essentially the same chassis design as the original NOOK Color, just shaved down a bit with some different guts – have a look at our week-long review

Kindle Fire called deficient as a media tablet by Barnes and Noble CEO

Image
The gauntlet has been thrown down today by Barnes & Noble with a device by the name of NOOK Tablet, an upgrade of their NOOK Color e-reader, a release here clearly aimed directly at Amazon’s recently revealed Kindle Fire. What’s been revealed this week is several upgrades from the NOOK Color to the new NOOK Tablet including a lighter chassis, a larger processor, and a whole new reassurance that you’ll be running find with Nook Cloud for cloud storage. How does this add up against the Kindle Fire? Barnes and Noble CEO William J Lynch Jr has a few words to say on the subject, I assure you. Starting with the fact that the IPS display made by LG for the NOOK Tablet with “Vivid View” is superior to the plain-ol’ LCD screen the Amazon Kindle has. Both device have a 7-inch display, so there’s no contention over which device has the better size, but the size inside does come up. Lynch notes that the Kindle Fire has a mere 8 GB of storage while the NOOK Tablet has 16GB, this all built-in

NOOK Color cut to $199

Image
Barnes & Noble has slashed the price of the NOOK Color, bringing the touchscreen Android-based tablet to directly compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire at $199.99. Slotting into the middle-ground between the new NOOK Tablet and the reduced NOOK Simple Touch, the NOOK Color will also get a firmware update in December that B&N calls its “largest ever.” Read on for all the change details. As with the NOOK Tablet, B&N’s deal with Netflix will see video access to NOOK Color owners once the new firmware hits. That will enable movie and TV show downloads; meanwhile, Hulu Plus streaming is expected to arrive “in the coming months.” Ebooks will get portrait and landscape support, along with more font sizes. The way content is downloaded will also be streamlined, with a new, faster library of books, magazines, newspapers and apps. E-magazines will be organized into stacks with dates and cover art. Buying new content will also be improved, the NOOK Store getting suggestions based o

NOOK Simple Touch updated: Faster, Longer, Cheaper

Image
Barnes & Noble hasn’t just got a new NOOK Tablet for us: the bookseller also has an updated version of the NOOK Simple Touch, now priced at just $99. A faster E Ink display takes pride of place, something B&N reckons takes just 450ms for each page-turn versus the Kindle’s 600ms. You’ll be reading for longer periods, too, thanks to battery improvements. Interestingly, Barnes & Noble says that the NOOK Simple Touch’s faster screen refresh is a software rather than a hardware improvement, thanks to the new Best-Text software. In fact, existing owners will be able to upgrade and get the speedier performance, thanks to firmware update available for manual installation today or pushed out over WiFi in the coming weeks. Battery life has been extended to two months, based on an hour of reading per day, and adverts have been stripped out too. B&N took the opportunity to snipe at Amazon’s marketing-supported Kindles with the comment that there are “no annoying ads” on its ra

Massive solar flare spotted as Sun flaunts its power

Image
Last Thursday a massive storm kicked up on the surface of the sun. The result of the storm was a gigantic and very powerful solar flare that was classified as X1.9 making it among the most powerful that the sun can produce. The flare was so powerful that 45 minutes after the flare erupted, radio communications on Earth were disrupted. Scientists say that the area that the solar flare originated from is still active and is being watched. There is a big chance of more powerful storms being produced in the region. The region that is being observed is massive at about 50,000 miles line and several times wider than the Earth, the area is called AR11339. NASA has several spacecraft pointed at the Sun looking for such events. Later on, the same day there was another big storm on the sun that resulted in a coronal mass ejection that headed towards Venus. Our sun is currently in the most active range of its 11-year cycle that will end in 2013. Check out the video below captured by NASA spa

NOOK Tablet announced officially

Image
This week Barnes & Noble has released details on it’s next generation NOOK device, the NOOK Tablet, an e-reader with twice the power of its predecessor with many of the same same specifications besides. Outside you’ll find the same 7-inch VividView IPS LCD display found on the original NOOK Color and the overall shape of the device is quite similar as well. Inside you’ll find a dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor at 1GHz, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a microSD card slot capable of holding 32GB of additional space for all your Barnes & Noble distributed multimedia. Of course there are a few tiny improvements over the original NOOK Color in that it’s .02 inches thinner and .9 ounces lighter, and that 16GB of storage is 8GB larger than the original. Have a peek at our week-long review of the NOOK Color for more information on what it will mean to hold this new device. Inside you’ll find such apps as Hulu Plus, Rhapsody, MOG, and Grooveshark along with the apps that c

WIMM One developer preview offered up for $299

Image
It appears that the folks at WIMM Labs have decided that it’s time to let the cat out of the proverbial bag with their wearable 1.4-inch color touchscreen Android device, here in the form of a developer preview device for a mere $299. We’ve gotten our hands on a WIMM earlier this year and just yesterday posted a review of a similar device that’ll certainly go into near-direct competition with the WIMM in the near future: the Motorola MOTOACTV. Is this WIMM’s response to a Motorola’s release of the next watch-based Android? Those who have signed up for the WIMM One Developer Preview have received an email today inviting them to participate in a window of opportunity that lasts from now until November 9th for those who have reserved their device early, this window having them able to purchase a “WIMM One Preview” for $299. You’ll be able to purchase this device for US shipment only, and there’s a limit of one per unless you plan on ordering in bulk, in which case you’ve got to contact

Green wind farms disrupt weather and military radar

Image
One of the things that Obama wants to leave as his legacy is a big push to more the country to green energy sources. One of the green power sources that are becoming increasingly common is wind farms that use giant windmills to generate electricity. The problem that the military and National Weather Service has found is that these wind farms interfere with radar. You can see in the photo here that the wind farm in the area circled in yellow is distorting the weather radar making it impossible to tell if the storm indicated is real or turbulence from the massive windmills. According to the USAF, the wind farms also interfere with military radar and create a hole in coverage that makes it impossible to identify incoming aircraft. The military has traditionally blocked wind farms from being placed near their radar installations. However, Senators in Oregon eventually forced the military to allow the installation of a wind farm near a radar station. The reason the military allowed the

Apple Security head allegedly steps down

Image
Over the last few years, Apple has had some serious issues with security of its prototype devices. Before the iPhone 4 launched an engineer that was testing the device got drunk in a bar in California and left the prototype device on the barstool. It was picked up by a couple guys that eventually sold it to Gizmodo. Back in August another prototype iPhone was lost in a bar. The sell of that prototype resulted in legal troubles for the pair that found the smartphone. Eventually courts forced the men to pay $500 in damages to Apple and gave them probation. There are reports flying around now that the head of security at Apple, John Theriault, has stepped down from his security head position at Apple. This is mostly rumor right now since Apple has not officially announced Theriault has left. The rumor claims that Theriault stepped down from his position after the controversy surrounding the loss of the iPhone 4 prototype. Apple was looking for security workers in September with listi

Verizon double-data LTE promotion revealed

Image
It should be no surprise to you at this point that the DROID RAZR is about to be one big gigantic deal for both Verizon and Motorola what with its slick nature and LTE connectivity, and here’s another reason to get excited: a brand new double-data plan. Verizon will be starting a promotion on November 8th, 2011, in which both existing and new customers are eligible for double data plans. Those people getting a 2GB data plan now for $30 will soon be getting a 4GB data plan for that same $30. Sound like a pretty good deal to attach to your brand spanking new LTE device? This information comes aside the news that the DROID RAZR will be available on 11-11-11 at Verizon Stores nationwide. These stores will be opening at 11:11 AM local time and the DROID RAZR will go on sale then, November 11, 2011. November is the month in which the very first DROID device was released by Motorola all the way back in 2009, and oh my goodness there’s this brand new limited-time offer to go with it too. Ha

HP debuts new TouchSmart 620 3D AIO and 2311gt 3D display

Image
HP has revealed some new 3D hardware for fans of 3D content. The new gear includes a new 3D edition AIO computer and a new 3D display. The AIO computer is the TouchSmart 620 3D and it has high performance for 2D and 3D content. It has an integrated webcam that lets user make their own 3D movies and still photos that they can share. The display on the AIO is a 23-inch unit and it has TriDef 3D game support. The display can swivel for use sitting or standing up to 180-degrees and it reclines at up to 60-degrees. HP Wireless TV Connect promises Full HD 3D streaming

Image
HP has outed the HP Wireless TV Connect, the company’s WHDI-enabled media streaming box that can funnel 1080p HD 2D and 3D content to your HDTV. Hooking up to your TV via HDMI, the Wireless TV Connect promises “virtually no latency” in comparison to rival systems, as well as super-straightforward setup. We’ve seen wireless TV transmitters before, of course, but high-resolution and zero wires generally don’t play nicely. HP reckons its system is good enough to handle smooth Full HD, however, and supports not only video content but application mirroring, so that you can squirt your browser over to your TV and surf more comfortably from the couch. Unfortunately that cord-cutting doesn’t come cheap. The HP Wireless TV Connect will go on sale in mid-December, priced at $179.99.

Anonymous #OpCartel ends over fears of death and violence

Image
I don’t think any of us though there was a redeeming quality about Anonymous and the way they hack credit card information and other personal details about people and then offered it up publically. Not too long ago, the hacker collective took on a project that had some redeeming qualities in an effort to out pedophiles online that were looking at child porn online. In the next attempt to actually do something good was a battle against some of the Mexican drug cartels that are being so violent. The plan by Anonymous was to out the details on people that were helping the cartels. Plans were to release details on taxi drivers, journalists, police, and others assisting the Zeta cartel. The problem was that some security experts reported that the drug cartel was hiring security experts to track down the members of Anonymous that participated. The alleged abduction of a member of Anonymous was apparently some of the reason for the plan. Some of the Anonymous members are now saying that

Microsoft relaxes Windows Phone hardware demands

Image
Microsoft is set to push Mango big time over the coming months with a bunch of the smartphones that will hit the market already unveiled. Microsoft has also relaxed the hardware requirements for the Mango platform, which should allow cheaper handsets to be offered on the market. Some of the hardware that doesn’t have to be included might be an issue for gamers though. The good news is that less hardware means cheaper devices and with Nokia aiming at entry level and mid-range devices for Mango this will make for cheaper handsets. Microsoft no longer requires the device to have a camera, compass, gyro, or front facing camera. That lack of a gyro might make gamers unhappy since it could affect motion sensing accuracy. Standard hardware includes hardware controls for start, search, and back. The display needs to be a WVGA 800 x 480 unit and the screen must be a capacitive 4-point multi-touch. Mango devices must also support data via WiFi and cellular networks. Minimum RAM needs to be

Lost Steve Jobs interviews to be shown in movie theaters

Image
If you are a fan of Steve Jobs and like to remember him by reading the new biography of his life and watching, some of the old interviews Jobs gave you will appreciate this. Back in 1995 after Jobs left Apple he did an interview with a man named Robert Cringely for a show that was airing in 1996 on PBS as a miniseries called Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires. The show focused on the computer and rise of Silicon Valley. One of the hallmark interviews of the series was one with Jobs. Apparently, only a small part of the footage shot with Jobs for the series actually made it into the program. Later when Cringely wanted to do a possible follow up series, he tried to find the rest of the footage to discover it was missing. The director of the show had an old VHS tape copy of it stored away and a call to Landmark theaters wound up with an agreement to show the lost footage as part of a 70-minute long program called Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview. The show will air in

Computer prices likely to soar as HDD costs rocket

Image
With all the flooding in Thailand the supply of HDDs for computers and other devices is quickly drying up. That means the HDDs that available are seeing prices soar. We already know Seagate is having serious shortages in supply of HDDs. All the shortages in the industry are driving prices up significantly across the board. An example is the price of a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 RPM 3.5-inch HDD sold on Newegg. The price back in August before the flooding for this HDD was only $50 to $60. As of November, the price on that HDD has soared to $139.99 thanks to the shortage. You can bet that the computers out there using that HDD are seeing a more significant price increase than that add-in drive has seen. I wonder if the price increase on the HDDs will make more people look to SSDs as an alternative. Even at the 180% price increase for that Samsung 1TB drive it is still much cheaper than the alternative SSD. I don’t really see the shortage of HDDs driving more folks to similar capa

Fujitsu debuts new PRIMEHPC FX10 supercomputer

Image
Fujitsu has a new supercomputer that is available all around the world as of today. The supercomputer has some very serious performance with a speed capable of scaling to 23.2 petaflops. Fujitsu has developed the supercomputer from the processors down to the middleware for reliability and operability says the company. The machine can be scaled up to a 1,024 rack configuration to reach the 23.2 petaflop performance level. Fujitsu is aiming the machine at things like drug development, disaster prevention and mitigation and other research that demands high performance from the computer. The processors inside the machine are SPARC64 IXfx units. Each of the processors has 16 cores and uses water cooling to maximize the performance per watt with standalone performance levels of 236.5 gigaflops and a performance per watt of over 2 gigaflops. Each node of the supercomputer can pack in 32GB or 64GB of RAM with memory bandwidth of 85GB/s. The supercomputers will start shipping in January wi

Apple eyes new LED backlight solutions for next iPad claim sources

Image
There have been many rumors, as is par for the Apple course, surrounding the future version of the iPad. According to some sources, the iPad 3 will land in Q3 of next year. There is a new rumor circulating that DigiTimes cites sources in the Taiwan backlight unit market as the source for. These sources are claiming that Apple is eyeing a change to the LED backlight units for the next iPad. The next iPad is rumored to be using a much higher resolution retina screen checking in at 2048 x 1536. The current backlight is a single bar design that wouldn’t be bright enough for a higher resolution screen. According to these sources, one solution Apple is looking at is a new single bar design with a pair of LED chips on it. The other solutions is a new dual light bar system. Apple is said to be leaning towards the dual light bar system. The reason is better brightness and the makers have apparently fixed issues with battery consumption that plagued these dual bar designs years ago. Natural

Siri a “competitive threat” says Google in antitrust downplay

Image
Apple’s Siri voice control system is a “significant development” and a “competitive threat” Google chairman Eric Schmidt has admitted, though the concession to the iPhone 4S feature may be more a strategic one than true admiration. Schmidt made the comments during a Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee, questioned around Google’s competitiveness and whether it was so large as to be subject to antitrust measures; the former CEO also claimed that Google is not, in fact, dominant in search, praised Microsoft’s Bing, PCMag reports, and repeated denials that the company prioritizes its own products in search results. The Google chairman had already been questioned by senators back in September, but faced a further round of supplementary questions from lawmakers yet to be convinced by the executive’s answers. Back at his first appearance, Schmidt admitted that Google was in a monopoly “area” but insisted that the company was no Microsoft; however, he also faced vocal criticism from com

AT&T slashes price on HTC Vivid and Samsung Skyrocket

Image
If you like AT&T’s network and have the need for a new Android device at a good price the wireless carrier has slashed some serious money off a couple very interesting smartphones. AT&T has chopped $100 each off the launch price of the HTC Vivid smartphone and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket smartphone. Both of these smartphones also operate on the new AT&T LTE network. The new Vivid handset will sell for $99.99 with the Skyrocket selling for $149.99. This sends both devices well within the range of competitive warfare against the LTE range from Verizon, though one should know that the LTE network with AT&T is still just developing and may not be in all areas for quite some time. Find out if LTE is in your area and know before you go! The new prices on these devices were only showing up on the phone specific pages, not the generic pages for all smartphones .This might mean the deals aren’t good in stores, but we don’t know that for certain. It’s also worth noting

Netflix lands MGM flicks for UK and Ireland

Image
Netflix has announced that it has landed a new content deal that will see fans in the UK and Ireland getting access to some new movies. The deal lands Netflix a multi-year agreement that will give Netflix exclusive rights to some first-run MGM feature films. The films will be offered on the Netflix instant streaming service via consoles, mobile devices, and set top boxes. The new deal will start in early 2012 when Netflix launches in the UK and Ireland. Netflix gets some interesting streaming flicks from the deal that will be on its service exclusively. The movies include The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, Zookeeper, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and 21 Jump Street. Other MGM catalog titles will come with the launch in the UK as well. Viewers will be able to see MGM catalog titles with classics like Fargo and the Usual Suspects among others. This is good news for UK fans of streaming media that have been waiting for a long time for Netflix t

Google lawyer: Microsoft patent hype is because WP7 is failing

Image
Google’s patent counsel has accused Microsoft of aggressively using patent licensing as a stand-in for product innovation, suggesting that Android OEMs have been pressured into cutting deals with Microsoft because the company is afraid its own products have been “marginalized.” Lawyer Tim Porter told SFGate that he did not feel Android development had been impacted by the multiple lawsuits going on around intellectual property in mobile, but was concerned that “the more people get distracted with litigation, the less they’ll be inventing.” “[Aggressively chasing licensing] is a tactic that Microsoft has used in the past, with Linux, for example. When their products stop succeeding in the marketplace, when they get marginalized, as is happening now with Android, they use the large patent portfolio they’ve built up to get revenue from the success of other companies’ products” Tim Porter, patent counsel, Google Last month, Microsoft signed a deal with OEM/ODM Compal which covers the

Best Buy shutters big-box UK stores; refocuses on connected devices

Image
Best Buy has confirmed it will close the eleven “big box” pilot stores the company opened in the UK, focusing instead on pushing Best Buy Mobile and “small box” outlets as it focuses on “connected device” sales. Opened in April 2010, the large stores are facing “challenging economic conditions and profit expectations” Best Buy claims, and will all close by the end of 2012. Meanwhile, the company is spending $1.3bn on buying out Carphone Warehouse’s 50-percent stake in the Best Buy Mobile profit share agreement. “Best Buy believes that there is a significant untapped opportunity as connections migrate from phones to other connectable devices such as tablets, laptops, TVs and eReaders. This transaction will enable Best Buy Mobile to accelerate the deployment of operational and connectivity expertise to these devices and for Best Buy to fully capture the profit potential of these opportunities” Best Buy Best Buy will continue to work with Carphone Warehouse, as well as pay the compan

Panasonic LUMIX GX1 official: 16MP, Full HD, 0.09s autofocus

Image
Panasonic‘s second camera of the day doesn’t record 3D like the LUMIX DMC-3D1, but the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 is the interchangeable lens camera many keen photographers have been waiting for. Packing a 16.01-megapixel Live MOS sensor and Panasonic’s Venus Engine, a 3-inch touchscreen, 1920 x 1080 60i HD AVCHD video recording and 0.09 second autofocus, the LUMIX GX1 works with the existing range of Micro Four Thirds lenses and will go on sale in mid-December. There’s a redesigned grip and casing, with improved texture for easier grip, while Panasonic is also pretty proud of its customization options, including two user-configurable settings options on the mode dial, two buttons and two menu tabs that can be preset to each photographer’s most commonly used features. 12800 ISO and touch-autofocus is supported, along with the ability of the camera to reconfigure a focus-lock if the subject moves while the shutter release is half depressed. A built-in flash is present and an optional

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-3D1 shoots 3D or simultaneous 2D/HD

Image
Panasonic has revealed its latest point-and-shoot, the LUMIX DMC-3D1, and as the name suggests it’s packing a pair of sensors for 3D still and video photography. The DMC-3D1 has two 12-megapixel sensors with 25mm ultra-wide angle lenses with 4x optical zoom, and as well as shooting 8-megapixel 3D stills or 1920 x 1080 60i 3D video, can also shoot 12-megapixel stills and 1920x1080i full HD 2D videos simultaneously, each sensor being used independently. That potentially makes the new LUMIX interesting even to those who aren’t really bothered by 3D stills or video. We’ve seen other cameras and camcorders capable of snapping still shots while video recording is taking place, but the still images are generally lower resolution than normal and are reliant on the same zoom/focus/exposure/etc settings of the video recording. By fitting two completely separate sensors, however, Panasonic has made it possible for independent settings for photo and video. A dedicated 2D/3D switch on the back

HTC Ice Cream Sandwich update range revealed

Image
HTC has revealed the first lucky Android smartphones in line for an Ice Cream Sandwich update, though owners will have to wait until “early 2012″ for Android 4.0 upgrades to actually be released. According to HTC, the new HTV Vivid - which we reviewed this weekend - is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich, along with the HTC Sensation, Sensation XL and Sensation XE. More details – and models – after the cut. The remainder of HTC’s upgrade plans predominantly affect the US, with the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G all getting Ice Cream Sandwich too. HTC had already confirmed that at least one of those devices would be in line for Android 4.0, and now says it is “continuing to assess” its current range to see what else can handle the OS. Interestingly, there’s no mention of either the Flyer or the Jetstream, HTC’s two tablets, though ICS is designed to work on both phones and slates as well as include native pen input support. HTC’s timescale seemingly fits

Firefox 8 up for FTP download now

Image
It’s time to upgrade your Firefox web browser, ladies and gentlemen, and it won’t be the same peaches and cream automatic update you’re used to – this one’s FTP. That means Mozilla has the files you need to update your Firefox to the next version, but at the moment you’ll have to manually download them from their servers and load it up yourself. In the near future (November 8th to be precise) you’ll have the automatic download working, so no worries if you don’t feel like traveling down the dark path. This newest version of Firefox will be more attuned to how and when an add-on is safe to use in more ways than one. First, add-ons will be set to disabled by default until the user who added them flips the ON switch, this appearing in a one-time dialog box that’ll also allow the user to work in a basic way with previously added add-ons. Twitter is integrated into the mainframe, appearing in the search bar for quick access, plus there’s a few simple updates including a preference to aut

Why I’m Excited By the Apple-Google Rivalry

Image
f I were to look around the technology space, I can’t find a single rivalry that is becoming more bitter than the one between Apple and Google. From cloud-based services to mobile operating systems to advertising, the companies are engaged in a war that could last for years. There are some who say that the battle between Apple and Google is a bad thing for the industry, consumers, and even the companies themselves. They say that an arms race will occur in the not-so-distant future that will eliminate all chances for smaller companies to compete, and thus solidify Apple’s and Google’s positions as huge and dominant players in the marketplace. Those critics also say that consumers might eventually be hurt by the battle since the companies could come to an odd Detente that stymies innovation growth. But I don’t see it that way. In fact, I firmly believe that the rivalry between Apple and Google is both a good thing for consumers and all the companies in the marketplace that might b

Jackson doctor convicted in star's 2009 drug death

Image
Michael Jackson's doctor was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter after a trial that painted him as a reckless caregiver who administered a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic that killed the pop star. The verdict against Dr. Conrad Murray marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture's most shocking tragedies — the death of the King of Pop on the eve of the singer's heavily promoted comeback concerts. Members of Jackson's family wept quietly after the verdict was read, and his mother, Katherine Jackson, later told The Associated Press, "I feel better now." Sister La Toya Jackson told the AP she was overjoyed. "Michael was looking over us," she said on her way out of the courthouse. Murray sat stone-faced during the verdict and was handcuffed and taken into custody without bail until sentencing on Nov. 29. He appeared calm as officials led him out of the courtroom. A shriek broke the eerie silence in the packed courtroom when the ver

Check Out: Akshay takes stand against uncivilised behaviour
