Amazon Kindle originally based on CEO Bezos’ BlackBerry

Image
There’s no doubt the original Kindle, although popular, wasn’t all that attractive. It had an angular design with a split keyboard and an odd scroll wheel. And now we know why. According to the NY Times, who spoke with an early Kindle hardware designer, that original version was so ugly because it was modeled after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ BlackBerry smartphone. Apparently, Bezos encouraged his designers to find inspiration from his then beloved BlackBerry, which must have been a BlackBerry 8700 like the one shown above. There’s definitely a resemblance. “Jeff Bezos would come into our design meetings and say he loved his BlackBerry and the ease with which he could find e-mails and respond to people,” explained the former Amazon designer. “That’s why the first Kindle was so boxy, had the funky square keyboard and that strange scroll wheel on the side; it was all inspired by Jeff’s BlackBerry.” The design of the Kindle gradually changed over time, becoming increasingly influenced by Apple

Fiat 500: perhaps the coolest cheap car ever

Image
There were a bunch of cool cars at the Texas State Fair and a bunch of them scattered around were entry-level cars that were designed to be a cheap means of transportation. Most of them looked like cheap cars too. When I ambled by the Fiat booth the new Fiat 500 and 500C caught my eye right away. I walked over to take a look and was very surprised to see just how cool these little cars actually were. Once I made my way around to where the window stickers were located, I couldn’t believe just how cheap the Fiat 500 was to have so much curb appeal and some really cool features. The base model of the Fiat 500 starts at a tick over $16,000 making it one of the cheapest cars at the show. Despite the low cost of the base 500, the car has nice features, an attractive cloth interior, and a manual transmission for that price. You can opt for an auto if you don’t like to change gears yourself. The coolest versions of the 500 were the up level ones that feature the body color inside the car on tr

Apple removes iPod Classic click-wheel games from iTunes

Image
This is the 10th birthday for Apple’s iconic mp3 player, the iPod Classic, and it will likely be its last. Following recent rumors that Apple will be discontinuing both the iPod Classic and the iPod Shuffle, it’s been discovered today that Apple has removed the section in iTunes that was devoted to games made for the classic iPod’s click-wheel. Previously, users could access the games via a link in the iTunes App Store called “iPod Click Wheel Games.” These games date back to Apple’s very first iPod model and include titles like Brick, Vortex, iQuiz, and Texas Hold’Em, totaling about 50 titles that all rely on the touch-sensitive wheel of the classic iPod. However, the link to this category of games is no longer available from the iTunes App Store menu. It’s believed that Apple will be putting the iPod Classic to rest during its major “Let’s Talk iPhone” event next Tuesday, October 4. Although there were hopes that Apple would update the iPod Classic with a larger 220GB Toshiba hard dr

HTC Rhyme hands-on and unboxing [Video]

Image
The most intentionally fashionable smartphone of all time has reached our doorstep, the HTC Rhyme in all its Plum-colored glory. Though there are several different color combinations coming in the future, this one is ours, and it is Plum. What we get in the box is, believe it or not, nearly everything you saw in the original HTC presentation of the device, including not only the headphones and the USB cord, but the cubical Charm and the power dock as well. Come on in and take a peek at the loveliest feminine-class* device on the market. Our review of this device will give you a full look at what we’ve got going on here, so I’ll be relatively brief and let the video we filmed do most of the talking. That said, this certainly one of the nicest all-around full packages HTC has yet delivered, it including each accessory in a way that makes it seem like they took the time to create each bit with care. While other devices include some stock earbuds, HTC includes some of the nicest rubber-tip

PS Vita to have 3G download limits and system-specific memory cards

Image
Sony has confirmed in a recent interview with ASCII that it’s upcoming PS Vita portable gaming console would have 3G download limits and that its proprietary memory cards would be system-specific. Although not completely unexpected, it’s a bit surprising that the device will require a completely new memory card format that will not be compatible with any of Sony’s other products. For downloads to the PS Vita over a 3G network, the initial file size limit will be 20MB. This limit could potentially be increased later on, but to start off, users will only be able to download files larger than 20MB via WiFi. The proprietary memory cards for the PS Vita are specific to the device, meaning that it won’t be compatible with any other future devices nor with other Sony products like its PSP and digital cameras. Sony did not explain why they chose a completely new format, but they did say that the format will be supported for the life of the platform. In case you’re not already familiar, the PS

Virgin Mobile presents the LG Optimus Slider and HTC Wildfire

Image
The folks at the Virgin Mobile offices in Canada must be having a big American party today because they’ve once again secured some fairly awesome Android phones to deal another wave of damage to the rest of the market share competition in the USA. That may be a bit of a stretch, but compared to past offerings, the LG Optimus Slider and the HTC Wildfire are certainly contenders for their ever-greatening Android team. The LG Optimus Slider is not the same as the LG Optimus Note we saw a few weeks ago, but it does have a full QWERTY keyboard sliding out from under it – the HTC Wildfire S, on the other hand is basically the same version we’ve seen in England and on T-Mobile. You can head back to our reviews of the Wildfire S to see everything you need to know about this first HTC device to be released on Virgin Mobile – Chris Davies and Cory Gunther present, or you can just check out this rundown: color options include the white you see here in the USA already or the silver you saw abroad,

iOS 5 Assistant voice control gets mockup video

Image
Apple’s upcoming release of iOS 5 is expected to include an advanced voice recognition technology that will enable a major new feature rumored to be called Assistant. This feature will allow users to perform a variety of tasks on their iPhones, such as sending text messages, checking email, and scheduling appointments, all by voice commands. MacRumors has created a mockup video showing how the iOS 5 Assistant might work based on the latest speculations. Since Apple acquired the Siri personal assistant voice command app, there have been plenty of reports that the company is working on integrating the Nuance speech recognition technology used in that service with iOS 5. The latest speculation seems pretty certain that the feature will be an exclusive for the next-gen iPhone and that it’s performance is snappy and accurate. The rendered mockup video of the Assistant interface is based on details from sources reportedly familiar with its development. The feature is initiated by a long pres

AT&T confirms iPhone insurance hike on October 4

Image
AT&T has confirmed previous rumors that it will be increasing the cost of iPhone insurance starting October 4. The carrier looks to be taking advantage of the high influx of new iPhone customers that will likely result from next Tuesday’s unveiling of the iPhone 5. It’s interesting to note that AT&T had this date picked all the way back in July, according to the below leaked screenshot obtained by 9to5mac. The leaked internal document revealed that AT&T will have a new tiered deductible schedule with non-refundable deductibles ranging from $50 to $199. The monthly rate will be increased from $4.99 to $6.99 and all this would take effect starting October 4. The carrier also seemed to make it a point that the iPhone would be moved to this tier plan as well. The carrier has now confirmed this change by posting this new page on its website. This could be just coincidence that Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” event is scheduled on that very same day, but it could also mean that the n

Google Nexus Prime renderings appear accurate

Image
It looks like those fabulous 3D illustrators are at it again, this time to bring us a good glimpse at what might well be what the Nexus Prime looks like. It’s the fine team of renderers at Ciccarese Design that draw us up a look at what might well be the next hero phone for Google’s mobile operating system, this time looking rather similar to two devices: the last Nexus phone, aka the Nexus S from Samsung, and the Samsung Galaxy S II line here in the USA. From what we understand via the ever-expanding rumor library surrounding this device, that combination might not be all that far off from the truth. What you’ll see here is a an extremely thin device with a giant display in the front probably somewhere in the 4.7-inch range. Inside the display you’ll find a Honeycomb-esque clock widget and a dock with apps, phone, browser, and phone shortcuts. Above this you’ll find a standard status toolbar above a secondary toolbar that’s again reminiscent of what we’ve seen in Honeycomb. This secon

Amazon Kindle Fire tablet costs $209.63 to make

Image
According to an estimate by research firm IHS iSupply, Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet costs about $209.63 to produce. That’s $10 more than the surprisingly low retail price that Amazon announced of $199 and not quite as a bad as the $50 loss per tablet that analysts have suggested previously. IHS iSuppli calculated the components cost for the Kindle Fire to be around $191.65. Adding to that other manufacturing expenses, the firm reached a total estimate of $209.63. Although Amazon is set to lose $10 per tablet, the company is betting on the increase in sales of both its digital and physical goods to make up for the loss. “The real benefit of the Kindle Fire to Amazon will not be in selling hardware or digital content. Rather, the Kindle Fire, and the content demand it stimulates, will serve to promote sales of the kinds of physical goods that comprise the majority of Amazon’s business,” said IHS iSuppli in a statement. IHS iSuppli also estimates that with the additional revenue it can gen

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray announced for USA

Image
The folks at Sony Ericsson have announced the USA release of the Xperia ray, a device we last heard about in June, here in the states for the first time and pushed to Newegg for the unlocked price of $429.99 (on sale today for $379.99 for a limited time.) This device is only sold here at the moment unlocked, your option to get it carried by AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers, Fido, up to you. This device features a single-core 1GHz processor, 1GB internal memory with 300 MB user available and 512 MB RAM, microSD card slot for up to 32GB of additional storage, and a 3.3-inch TFT display at 480 x 854 pixel resolution. The display also boasts some cool BRAVIA ENGINE tech. This device’s motor, again, is a 1GHz Scorpion processor, you’ll also get Adreno 205 GPU with your MSM8255 Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. If that sentence just completely flew over you head, basically what it means is that you’ll do fine for games and apps, but it’s not nearly as powerful as the dual-core processors we’re seeing o

Virgin Mobile postpones data throttling until 2012

Image
Virgin Mobile has decided to postpone its original plans to throttle smartphone data speeds for its heaviest data users. Back in July, the carrier revealed that data throttling would begin in October, but today it announced that those plans will be delayed until 2012. But the company did not give any specific dates as to when it will implement the new policy. “We have decided to delay the reduction of data speeds until 2012 to ensure we have all of the necessary systems in place so that our customer experience will remain positive,” said Virgin Mobile spokeswoman Beth Evegan. “We will provide further information on timing beforehand so our customers have advance notification.” The original plan was to throttle the data speeds of those users that surpass 2.5GB of data per month. This threshold would amount to about 3 percent of its customers and would only affect the current billing cycle, with speeds reverted back to normal for the next billing cycle until usage surpasses the limit aga

Sony Ericsson announces indy developer support for FreeXperia program

Image
If you’re an avid fan of Android, you’ve got to know that there’s a gigantic developer community out there that’s not just interested in creating market-ready apps. They’ call themselves developers, but what the rest of the world calls them is hackers. In particular, Sony Ericsson wants to get in on this party by voicing their support for ROM creators across the board. The program Sony Ericsson is announcing this week is FreeXperia, an assistant group for developers looking to create great new customized experiences for Xperia devices. Neato! Apparently the FreeXperia group had existed before now, but Sony Ericsson has today for the first time voiced and promised their support officially. The FreeXperia group was up until this point supported by Sony Ericsson with devices and technical know-how and just announced today by SE they are in the process of creating some brand new ROMs for Xperia devices like the Xperia PLAY and the Xperia arc that are based on CyanogenMod, the most famous R

Chevy shows off actual Transformers: Dark of the Moon movie cars

Image
I have enjoyed the Transformers films well enough. My kids liked the last film the best and it was one of the better ones in the franchise. If you have watched the film you have seen Bumblebee and Sideswipe during the flick. At the Texas State Fair, Chevrolet had both the Stingray Concept that was actually the Sideswipe car from the film and the actual Camaro that was Bumblebee in the film on hand. These cars are both specifically made for film. While Bumblebee was made from a stock Camaro SS with a few visual tweaks, the Stingray Concept is a handmade concept car. You might have wondered why you never see the inside of Sideswipe since the car has no top. That would be because the vehicle wasn’t finished out on the inside. It has a pair of racing seats, a steering wheel, and painted on gauges. However, the concept is a running and driving car. We were asked not to post photos of the inside of the car so there are no shots of the cool scissor doors in operation. The Bumblebee car was a
