LG Optimus LTE gets official: 4G, HD display and dual-core

Image
LG has outed its latest smartphone, the LG Optimus LTE, and as the name suggests it’s a challenge to Samsung’s recently revealed Galaxy S II LTE. The Android-powered Optimus LTE – or LU6200 as we knew it before – supports high-speed mobile data, of course, but LG is particularly proud of the 4.5-inch “IPS True HD” display which, the company reckons, will be the first 1280 x 720 smartphone panel to go on sale in South Korea. Other specs include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor running Android 2.3, along with DLNA compliance and an HDMI port for hooking the Optimus LTE up to your HDTV. That combination of a speedy processor and LTE is likely to suck down power pretty darn quickly, so LG has slotted in a 1,830 mAh battery pack. The camera is an 8-megapixel unit supporting HD video recording. Unfortunately that pushes the dimensions up to 10.4mm thick, though that’s still on the narrow side for a big-screen handset like this. The LG Optimus LTE will ship in South Korea on October 5, on S

Mortal Kombat reboot now a reality via viral YouTube video

Image
If you’re a fan of one of the most famous fighting-based video games of all time, Mortal Kombat, certainly you’ve heard of the YouTube fan series “Rebirth.” Oh you haven’t? You’re in for a treat. Not only is the story at hand a rebirth of the film series based on the video game, its a rebirth of the career of the filmmaker whose only other notable work is an unsuccessful remake of “Fame”. The short film that started it all was created out of love for the series – and a desire to reboot the series. Turns out his gamble (and the good timing with the newest installment of the video game series) payed off because Warner Bros. is giving the creators the green light. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, the original greatest fan-film for Mortal Kombat in the short, short history of fan films for said video game is going to be a major motion picture. It’s the two Warner Bros. units that are coming together on this one, New Line Cinema for the film portion and Burbank studios’ video game unit

iPhone 5 iDSLR prank revealed

Image
If you ever wondered if your iPhone photos could possibly get more professional looking and perfect, here’s your answer: the iPhone 5 iDSLR. It’s the newest fake item to come out of the internet-based ranks of awesomely impossible devices branded with nothing less than a gigantic Apple logo over the lens and completely the wrong font used for the word “Apple” on the front of the flash area. Will this be your window into the new high-class Hipstamatic-laden iPhone photo future? I think so. What you’ll find here is “Senior Vice President of Design” mister Jony Ive speaking about the ideal nature of this device, one where you can not only use the camera to take the best photos ever, you can use the iPhone on the back to make calls and work with apps. That’s right, there’s an iPhone on the back that does not detach. This completely fake product takes absurdity to the next level by saying they’ve got an iPhone literally fused to a DSLR and that this is the way of the future. “What’s gre

Android, iOS 5 to get native Hotmail app

Image
For many of us, Hotmail may sound like something from the distant past that haunted us with spam, but Microsoft is aiming to bring it back to life with a slew of new improvements and the release of an official Android app today for the free email service. The company also revealed that Hotmail will get native support in the upcoming iOS 5. The revamped Hotmail promises easier blocking and unsubscribing tools along with automated clean-up features and enhanced support for folders. The Hotmail for Android app will also include push email, calendar, and contact sync, send/receive images, send/receive attachments, multiple Hotmail account support, and folder and sub-folder support. The app is free and is available now to all devices running Android 2.1 through 2.3.3. Hotmail will be native on iOS 5, which is expected to launch along with the rumored iPhone 5 during tomorrow’s major Apple event called “Let’s Talk iPhone.” (We’ll be covering that live, so be sure to follow along with our

HP pre-production 3D formed notebook models hands-on

Image
When you’ve got a multi-million-dollar business on your hands, you don’t just crank out notebooks whenever you please. You’ve got to do all sorts of pre-illustration, testing, and bashing to bits of your product before it hits the sales floor. HP knows this, and they’ve let us come into their Houston home and take a look around their halls at everything from here to there in what was called the HP Making of Elite Tour – the first of its kind. What we’ve got here is one of the first things we got to see on the tour – a stack of notebook forms. As you’ll see in the video here in this post, these are 3D-printed forms of future (and past) notebooks as created by the hardware conceptualizers at HP. Our tour consisted of a lot of HP’s Elite line of PCs, so we must assume that most of these were coming from those ranks, but the stack is high, and the stack is interesting. How would you like to be able to design notebooks like these, complete with the ability to see your concepts printed out

Battlefield 3 aims to push limits on PS3 hardware

Image
Those of you waiting for the PlayStation 3 version of the next big bad war game Battlefield 3 will be glad to hear that its creators are not only bringing the game to the PS3 for certain (if you did not know, that is,) they’re also having to push the limits of the console to bring it. And bring it they shall, DICE developers letting the world know that both the PS3 and the the Xbox 360 versions will be competitively polished to keep up with the PC version, the PS3 version in particular getting a double dose of optimization. It was in an interview with none other than the official PlayStation blog that DICE Producer Patrick Liu let loose some pointed factoids on the upcoming Battlefield game. There’s currently an open beta of the game going on inside the PlayStation Network, so questions came to Liu from real-live players of the game (through PSBlog, of course): PSB:That level you showed on the PS3 was huge, but it was also highly detailed — I saw mirrored floors, reflective surface

Microsoft restores Zune HD page, not axed yet

Image
When Microsoft unveiled its Zune Pass price drop with a new splash page showing the service working for PCs, Windows Phones, and the Xbox, the company appeared to have pulled any reference to its Zune HD mp3 player. This quickly sparked reports that it was the end of the road for the device. But not so, says Microsoft, clarifying today that the whole thing was a publishing mistake. The Zune HD product page has since been restored but despite its reappearance and Microsoft’s clarification, references to the Zune HD are still missing from the Zune music pass page, where it had initially appeared as shown in this cached page. Either way, it seems like the struggling Zune HD will soon face a similar fate as the original Zune hardware that got discontinued earlier this year. Surely the Zune HD wouldn’t be missed too much as the hardware has seen nary an update in the last two years along with plenty of price drops. Microsoft looks like its ready to phase out the dedicated mp3 devices in

iOS App Rentals coming this week

Image
It appears quite likely that inside the BETA release for iTunes 10.5 comes a code that points directly at the future ability for users to rent applications instead of purchasing them. What this could mean is several things – it could simply be the ability for developers to allow rentals of their applications, this opening up a new window for revenue where now only freemium, payed, and free with apps options exist. Could this be the start of another revolution in app developing, or is it a complete phantom, only a re-named way to try apps out before purchase? What twitter user SonnyDickson appears to have found is a set of five simple codes, the first asking if you’d like to start playing an app, the second being the key – saying that apps are automatically removed from your iTunes library at the end of the rental period, the third and fourth reminding you that the app will be deleted, the fourth simply reading App. This seems like a possibility for iOS – sucking an app back up into t

Adobe Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 downloads available tonight

Image
Adobe announced that its Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 will be available for download tonight starting at 9PM Pacific Time or midnight for folks on the East Coast. These latest updates were detailed back in September and are expected to bring significant improvements such as faster rendering speeds and support for 3D gaming on a variety of platforms, including mobile devices as well as connected TVs. The updates are expected to bring hardware-accelerate 2D and 3D graphics rendering through Stage 3D. Adobe promises up to 1,000 times faster rendering performance in comparison to Flash Player 10 and AIR 2, which means up to 60FPS rendering and console quality games. Additionally, LG and TiVo have been announced as the latest partners to bring Flash-based apps to its connected TVs via AIR, while Samsung SmartTVs already support Flash. AIR 3 will also allow developers to convert code to native apps for other platforms, including Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS, and iOS. The announcement too

Verizon gives birth to first 4G LTE C.O.W.

Image
No, Verizon did not suddenly turn into a holstein – instead, what we’ve got here is the start of the first 4G LTE Cell On Wheels, right in the heart of Florida. This vehicle will be projecting awesome LTE connectivity wherever it may roam in Florida, and the mobile carrier is promoting said tower with plenty of barnyard-esque words and phrases. “Delivered” at Verizon Wireless‘ “super-switch” facility in Pembroke Pines, the brand new C.O.W. “weighs in at a healthy 24,000 pounds and measures 1,080 inches, including its telescoping antenna tower.” It could also walk immediately after birth, what a smart beast! What this newest of Verizon’s ever-expanding army of mobile projection units will do is be deployed to select locations across the state when demand grows to a certain point in that area. Wireless coverage and service spikes in areas around sports events, tourist destinations, festivals, and all manner of flea markets of course these days, and Verizon will now be there to keep the

Rhapsody buys Napster in attempt to fight Spotify

Image
Rhapsody announced today that it will be buying Napster from Best Buy to boost its subscriber base and expand its IP portfolio. The move appears to be a direct reaction to the intensifying competition from music service rivals like Spotify, which has been hogging much of the spotlight lately. The terms of the deal have not been revealed, but it is expected to close around November 30 with Best Buy receiving a minority stake in Rhapsody. “This deal will further extend Rhapsody’s lead over our competitors in the growing on-demand music market,” said Rhapsody president Jon Irwin in a statement. “There’s substantial value in bringing Napster’s subscribers and robust IP portfolio to Rhapsody as we execute on our strategy to expand our business via direct acquisition of members and distribution deals.” When Napster was acquired by Best Buy in 2008 for $121 million, it had about 700,000 subscribers but then faced a large decline. The current Napster subscriber base hasn’t been revealed,

iPhone 5 may cause Sprint to bet the farm

Image
If there’s one measure of a device’s popularity and success, it’s the willingness of a single company to bet their entire livelihood on future sales. That’s quite possibly what’s happening right this second behind the scenes at Sprint, where the 3rd largest mobile carrier in America appears to be making a multibillion dollar deal with Apple which will score them an exclusive deal with the iPhone 5. Sound like a possibility? Would Apple be swayed by $20 billion dollars from the pockets of Sprint, a deal that wouldn’t even have Sprint breaking even until 2014? We shall see! Several sources including the Wall Street Journal and BGR are saying that not only will Sprint be dropping cash enough to purchase 30.5 million iPhones, they’ll be getting an iPhone 5 exclusive. This device, the iPhone 5, mind you, not the iPhone 4S, will be running on the carrier’s 4G WiMAX network and will be exclusive to Sprint until AT&T and Verizon get ahold of it as an LTE device some time in the first qua

Comcast Deals with the "Digital Divide"

Image
In today's internet-connected world, many individuals assume that access to broadband connections is within easy reach of anyone who needs to get online. Alas, we have learned to take the internet for granted, and we have come to depend on it for a variety of everyday activities such as communications, information, banking, and education. But what we often fail to remember is that the price we pay for internet access cannot be afforded by every household, especially in these times of economic uncertainty. People who cannot afford to pay for a reasonably fast internet connection at home have fallen victim to “the digital divide," where essential, everyday comforts of internet cannot be used by lower-income families who must spend their money on other necessities. The digital divide can be quite alienating, especially for low-income families with school-age children. At least one major broadband service provider is willing to address the digital divide issue head-on. In cert

Ra.One Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS 'Humungous' - That's what described in one word the expectations one has from the music of  Ra.One . Though this may seem like a simple word, there is a lot that goes behind the expectations here.  -  Ra.One  boldly claims itself to be the biggest movie ever made in the country  - Shah Rukh Khan is returning to the big screen more than year and a half after his last big screen outing  - Due to two reasons above, music has to be in line as well  - Vishal & Shekhar are synonymous with new sound especially when it comes to biggies. The stage is all set for them to justify the trust and confidence shown in them to deliver goods.  - Music of films made by Anubhav Sinha has more often than not always worked. Remember Dus, Cash, Tum Bin ?  Simply put, there is no margin of error and with the kind of grandeur that the film promises; music has to be in accordance too. With expectations of a loaded experience ahead ( Ra.One has 10 unique tracks with fiv

Adobe preps Photoshop Touch among six tablet-optimized apps for iPad, Android

Image
Adobe announced six tablet-optimized apps as part of its new cloud-based initiative that aims to enhance tools for creativity and sharing via iPads and Android tablets. Headlining the six apps is of course the company’s Photoshop Touch that brings the image editing features of the powerful desktop Photoshop software to tablet device The other apps include more specialized creativity tools, including Adobe Collage, which lets you import photos and provides drawing tools to create image collages. There’s also Adobe Debut that works like a presentation software for Creative Suites files, Adobe Ideas for vector-based drawing tools, Adobe Kuler for color theme creation, and Adobe Proto for websites and mobile apps prototyping. The apps, each costing $9.99, will be released first for Android starting next month, while release dates for the iPad versions may not be until early 2012, likely in time to debut with the iPad 3. And although there’s no mention of Windows 8 tablets, the platform

Amazon Kindle Fire sales near 100,000 on first day

Image
It is according to one digital marketing firm, eDataSource, sales of the cloud-based Amazon Kindle Fire Android-based tablet have reached 95,000 in its first day on the market – all of those sales being pre-orders. That’s not quite one-third of the 300,000+ first-gen iPads sold on the first day back when it was released in April of 2010, but 100,000 is no number to scoff at. The Kindle Fire will officially be shipping on November 15th, just in time for you-know-what, and retailers are currently having heart attacks over its low price tag at $199 standard. The way the firm that found the numbers for the Kindle Fire is via “tracking email purchases found in The New York research firm’s database of millions of email, Twitter and Facebook marketing campaigns dating back to 2003.” Given that Amazon has already reported that the Fire tablet had already been it’s top seller for several days in a row, it doesn’t seem out of line to guess that they’re exactly right on their high-flying estima

Apple Virtual Personal Assistant app to be a “computing paradigm shift”

Image
It was all the way back in February of 2010 when the folks at Siri introduced their original Assistant app for iPhone, and just one month later when their company was acquired by Apple. This week (tomorrow, as it were,) Apple is expected to release its very own version of the intelligent assistant interface with its newest iteration of the iPhone, this newest version made to work hand-in-hand with the newest iPhone’s powerful A5 processor. Siri co-founder Norman Winarsky spoke with 9to5mac this week about the soon-to-be-released software, calling it world-changing and making no effort to hide the idea that it’s coming soon, very soon. Winarsky goes into a little bit of detail on what the iOS 5-standard Assistant app will be holding, and notes that although the original software from Siri does work on handsets as old as the iPhone 3GS, “all kinds of optimizations and shortcuts” had to be made to make it work correctly back then. This newest version, Winarsky says, will run “much better

NOOK Color expands to Target Superstore nationwide

Image
Today Barnes & Noble have announced their newest sales partner for the NOOK Color and what’s now called the NOOK Simple Touch Reader. It is Target, the superstore based right here in my home city of Minneapolis, with both versions of the NOOK now available at Target stores nationwide. This makes the NOOK one of the most widely in-store available ereaders on the circuit, currently sitting in stores at Best Buy, Books-A-Million, Fred Meyer, Office Max, P.C. Richard & Sons, Radio Shack, Staples, Target, Walmart, and of course Barnes & Noble. This addition began on October 2nd and you should start to see the tablets in stores across the USA soon. You can also purchase both versions of the NOOK online at Target, though both versions still read OUT OF STOCK at the moment I’m typing this post up. You can take a closer look at these two newest versions of the nook by heading to, first, our hands-on with the NOOK Simple Touch Reader then head back to our ultimate look at the NOOK C

Pantech continues US invasion with ultra-slim Hotshot handset

Image
The fine folks at Pantech, a group which very recently released the least expensive version of a Verizon LTE-capable smartphone on the carrier, today announced another lovely little oddity: the Pantech Hotshot. This is a device that we’d otherwise not even think about making a post for since it’s basically a feature phone, but it does have some features that should spark some interest for you in the future of Pantech. Before we continue though, have a look at our review of the Pantech Breakout and see what it means to fly quickly for a low dollar bill. This newest device is, again, called the Pantech Hotshot and although it does not run on Android, it’ll be running no less than Opera Mini Browser for all your web browsing needs. It’s ultra-slim at just 0.35-inches, and it’s got a rather nicely sized (for its price) display at 3.2-inches. This display is an LCD touch display, and on it you’ll be working with text, photo, video, voice messaging, calls, and mobile instant messaging. And l

JVC GC-PX10 brings PX1 hybrid camera to US this month

Image
JVC’s GX-PX1 hybrid camera/camcorder has found itself a US release date and price as the JVC GC-PX10, with the distinctive big-barreled shooter expected to drop later in October for a hefty $899.95. Capable of shooting both 12-megapixel stills and Full HD 1920 x 1080/60p video at up to 36Mbps, as well as super-slow-motion 300fps footage and more, the GC-PX10 is based around JVC’s FALCONBRID processor, and can simultaneously capture 8.3-megapixel photos and Full HD video. If that wasn’t enough, there’s ISO6400 support and the ability to fire off 8.3-megapixel (3840 x 2160) stills images at a ridiculous 60 shots-per-second – up to a maximum of 130 shots total per burst – or 12-megapixel stills at 30 frames-per-second. Super-slow-motion video, meanwhile, can be recorded for two full hours, though only at VGA resolution. Optical image stabilization, a 10x optical zoom and white balance, aperture and shutter controls for manual use round out the main specs, while there’s a 3-inch posable to

Apple iPhone 4S/5 Pre-Event Rumor Roundup

Image
Apple’s iPhone 2011 event kicks off in just over a day’s time, and as always the rumor machine keeps churning right up to the wire. Anticipation for the fifth-gen smartphone is high, though we’re yet to see the sort of convincing leak that pre-empted the iPhone 4 unveil. That hasn’t stopped the rumors from flourishing, however, so head on past the cut for details on what we’re expecting, what we’re hoping to see, and what doesn’t look likely, then join us tomorrow for the full SlashGear liveblog at http://live.slashgear.com/ One big question this year is whether Apple will have one or two devices to show us, something board member Al Gore seemingly suggested. The company has already been pushing a two-model range for the past few years, keeping the older device around – whether the iPhone 3G or the iPhone 3GS – at a lower price point whenever a newer model is launched. This year is tipped to be similar, with the current iPhone 4 sticking around with just 8GB of internal storage as the

LightSquared and Sharp team up for smartphone and tablet development

Image
Sharp has some pretty cool smartphones and tablets, sadly most of that stuff never makes it to the US for geeks to try out. LightSquared is a company that is new to the US and is looking to offer a nationwide 4G network at wholesale prices. That means no direct to consumer sales. Perhaps the tie up with Sharp will mean that more of the cool Sharp devices will come stateside. Sharp is the first maker of devices that LightSquared has chosen to launch a strategic collaboration with. The goal of the agreement is to produce a range of product solutions that take advantage of Sharp hardware like advanced LCD panels and camera modules. The devices will be co-developed and then offered to the LightSquared customers for their networks. LightSquared will be showing off some of its devices at CTIA Enterprise and Applications conference on October 11-13 in San Diego. The LightSquared 4G network uses LTE technology. I would expect the service offered by LightSpeed to find its way into the offerings

Future owners given a glimpse of the Tesla Model S

Image
Tesla made its name in the electric car world with the sweet and fast roadster. The Roadster never sold in huge amounts and was killed off to make way for the Model S that you see in the photo below. This car is cheaper and has more space than the Roadster offered making it more appealing to drivers across a wider market. The Model S will sell for $57,400 before the federal tax credit. The price of the Model S will come in at $49,900 after the Federal $7,500 tax credit. Tesla recently held an event that allowed all of the people that had pre-ordered one of the cars to come on a touch of the Tesla facilities and then take a ride in the Model S prototype. The car is also packed with some cool tech on the inside. The key part of the tech is the big 17-inch screen in the dash that shows the in-car entertainment and navigation. There is also a 12.3-inch screen in the dash for instruments. The downside to the screens is that they lack support for multitouch so gestures aren’t supported. The

Origin PC offers optional Frostbyte and Cryogenic liquid cooling systems

Image
Origin PC has been making some of the more interesting gaming computers for a while now. One of the cooler things about the computers that Origin offers is that you can customize them as far as your budget allows. The company has announced that it will be offering two new liquid cooling systems as options on its gaming machines. Origin PC now offers the Frostbyte and the Cryogenic liquid cooling systems to allow for higher overclocking speeds on CPUs and GPUs. The company claims that the liquid cooling system allows up to 5.2GHz clock speeds on a single core processor. The Frostbyte can be used on graphics cards too and is a sealed and maintenance free system. It uses a micro-channel fluid heat exchanger. The Cryogenic system also allows for high overclocking speeds for the CPU and GPU. It has tech support and a full hardware warranty for up to three years. The system uses a special cooling fluid that claims to reduce temperatures by up to 8-degrees compared to other cooling fluids. Th

ALMA ground-based observatory now in use

Image
A new ground based observatory has opened its dishes up to the stars for the first time. The observatory is the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array also known as ALMA. The special telescope isn’t fully operational just yet, but it has snapped its first photo and it looks impressively good. The photo is of the Antennae Galaxies and the galaxies can’t be seen by visible or infrared telescopes. Right now, the telescope array has only a third (12) of the 66 radio antennas that it will have eventually. The current dishes are separated by 125 meters rather than the 16KM max. ALMA is located on the Chanjnantor plateau in northern Chile at 5,000 meter elevation. The most interesting thing about ALMA is that even though it’s not complete, the telescope is already the best telescope of its kind. ALMA uses light in the millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, which are roughly a thousand times longer than the visible-light wavelengths. The longer wavelengths allow the study of very cold

iPhone 4S listings hit Vodafone Germany

Image
With the iPhone event coming tomorrow the rumors are at a fevered pitch around the web. Last week we saw a leak on the iPhone 5 specs thanks to Cincinnati Bell. We also saw listings for the iPhone 4S appear in iTunes and then get pulled. This week we have another leak for you to check out coming by way of Vodafone Germany. The leak on Vodafone shows three version of the iPhone 4S in two colors. The leak was spied when someone was looking at the bumper for the iPhone 4 and hit the drop down list for phones it supports. The list shows compatibility with the iPhone 4S in white and black with capacities of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The listing also shows 8GB iPhone 4 versions in black and white as well. The thing notably missing is any mention of the iPhone 5. This could mean that the bumper doesn’t fit the iPhone 5 or it could mean there is no iPhone 5. The rumors have pointed to a thinner iPhone 5 in the past. The media event for the iPhone is tomorrow so we don’t have long to wait before we

T-Mobile outs $30 4G plan for Walmart shoppers on a budget

Image
T-Mobile USA has announced a new data 4G plan, to be exclusively offered atWalmart at just $30 for 5GB of HSPA+ data with no annual agreement. The plan – which will revert to 2G speeds after the 5GB allowance is up – also includes unlimited text messages and 100 voice minutes. Walmart will be offering it with its six-strong range of T-Mobile devices, including a new pre-pay phone. Of course, when T-Mobile USA says “4G” it really means HSPA+, so you shouldn’t expect speeds on a par with LTE. Still, it’s one of the cheaper ways to get online while mobile, while calls outside of the 100 minute allowance are charged at 10 cents per minute. The new prepaid plan will launch on October 16 across Walmart stores and online. No details at this stage of which new T-Mobile handset Walmart will be offering, though we’ll update when we find out more.

I have a DSLR camera and I am not at all qualified to use the thing for quality shots. I bought it mostly for the much faster shutter so I could actually get photos of fast action without only ending up with an arm or elbow in the shot. The new micro four thirds cameras are pretty cool and a lot of people are moving to them now that there are lots of options. The catch for Canon micro four thirds camera users is that even if they had a lens on with aperture control, the aperture settings didn’t work. The lenses need power to make the aperture function. If you are, a user that is in this boat the new LiveLens adapter will bring your aperture control back. The adapter snaps on the front of your camera and you can mount the lenses directly to it. You can then control the aperture using a little screen on the adapter. The downside is that you lose your automatic focus capability. The adapter is for video shooters where you are using manual focus so that loss isn’t such a big deal. The adap

Third Gen Xbox 360 dashboard update spied on video

Image
Last week we mentioned that the third generation of the Xbox 360 dashboard was inbound soon. The new update is expected to launch November 15. There is another rumor that the new update might go into beta this month as well. Yet another rumor claims that there will be some sort of cable TV service along with the update. What is claimed to be the new dashboard has turned up on video. The only downside is that the dashboard is apparently in French so you might not be able to read it. You can still get a good feel for the design and layout of the dashboard though. The dash is supposed to have more Kinect integration too. The tip that surfaced last week surfaced via a PayPal leak. It seems the PayPal workers are doing some of the testing since PayPal is one of the services that is a payment options for games and content on the network. The dashboard looks pretty good, you can see the video below.

Amazon cuts Kindle Touch 3G browser access

Image
Amazon has quietly removed support for general web browsing over 3G on the new Kindle Touch 3G, only allowing the ereader’s experimental web browser to use the WiFi connection rather than the bundled cellular data access. “Our new Kindle Touch 3G enables you to connect to the Kindle Store, download books and periodicals, and access Wikipedia – all over 3G or Wi-Fi” an Amazon official confirmed over the weekend, however “experimental web browsing (outside of Wikipedia) on Kindle Touch 3G is only available over Wi-Fi.” Previous Kindles had allowed general web access using the 3G models’ integrated cellular modem, though the user experience was generally underwhelming until the third-gen brought the Webkit engine to the table. Just as with downloading ebooks and browsing the Kindle store, accessing regular webpages was included in the no-charge 3G access. That’s all changed in the new Kindle Touch 3G, with all webpages bar Wikipedia access being out of reach for the 3G connection. The Kin

BBM for Android screen shots surface

Image
If you are an Android user that has lots of friends on BBM for Blackberry and you want in on the Blackberry Messenger action, it looks like the first proof that the app is coming has surfaced. There are a pair of new screen shots that shows the icon and another page from the app. The icon for BBM on Android looks really strange. It’s not quite the same size of the other app icons. It could be that the icon is a placeholder for the real thing since it’s still in the dev stage at this point. The other page of the app shows the contact profile page and it has the features in the shot you expect for the BBM service. There is a chance that these are not the real thing, but there have been rumors before that the BBM service would land on Android. The app is expected to come to market in 2012. Do you think these leaked screens are the real thing?

Researcher creates little flying carpet made of conductive plastic

Image
The flying carpet is something that is featured in fairy tales and cartoons. A researcher has made a real flying carpet though from a sheet of conductive plastic. The researcher that made the creation is Noah Jafferis and the idea came to him after reading a mathematical paper after he received his PhD from Princeton. The little sheet of conductive plastic measures 4-inches and is driven by the so-called “ripple power” waves created from an electrical current driving little pockets of air underneath. The air pushes the flying carpet along at a pace of a centimeter per second. The researcher thinks that the speed can be increased to as much as a meter per second in the future. One thing that the researchers had to focus on was a way to control the behavior of the sheet as it deformed at high frequencies, which was eventually overcome. The team says that the sheet has more in common with hovercraft than an airplane since it has to keep close to the ground. This is because the source of t
