Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus hardware is only half of the Android excitement today: the other part is arguably more significant, the first deployment of Ice Cream Sandwich. The most significant refresh to Android in several generations, Android 4.0 brings tablet and smartphone strands in-line with a new, Honeycomb-inspired UI and a brace of new features. We’ve had our hands on the Galaxy Nexus for the past few days, and while it’s too soon for the full SlashGear review, join us after the cut for some first-impressions and demo videos.

Could the Galaxy Nexus be the most anticipated Android phone of the holiday season? It certainly has some strong competition, with the DROID RAZR and HTC Rezound doing their level best to muscle into the market ahead of the first Ice Cream Sandwich phone’s arrival. Still, Samsung’s smartphone – and the third device to wear the official Nexus branding – has plenty to differentiate it, not just Android 4.0. The HSPA+ model has arrived on the SlashGear test bench; read on for our first impressions.

Animal rights group PETA has defended its anti-Mario campaign, in which the Nintendo character was accused of “sending the message that it’s OK to wear fur” for sporting a Tanooki suit, describing its intentions as “tongue-in-cheek.” In an email from PETA’s media coordinator to gaming site Kotaku, the headline-grabbing claims and gory mini-game was said to be “a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur.” “We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins” PETA’s Shakira Croce continued, referring to the raccoon dogs that closely resemble that Tanooki suit and which are skinned alive to harvest their fur. “You can help them by never buying real fur.” Although over 250,000 people apparently played the mini-game in the first 36hrs it was available, PETA spokesperson Ashley Palmer said, the organization was still taken aback by the extreme reactions it prompted a

HTC‘s upcoming Tegra 3 based tablet, the HTC Quattro, has been revealed in a leaked official render, complete with hardware spec details ahead of the slate’s expected early 2012 release. Fronted by a 10.1-inch 1280 x 768 display, believed to use the same Scribe digital stylus as the existing HTC Flyer and Jetstream, the Quattro will pair 1GB of RAM with its quadcore processor, Pocketnow‘s sources say, along with Bluetooth 4.0. There’ll also be 16GB of internal storage – with a microSD card slot to augment that – and WiFi support for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. It will also include Beats Audio support, with twin speakers and twin microphones, though only a 2-megapixel main camera (still capable of 1080p HD video recording) and a 720p front-facing camera. Facebook claims it has discovered the identity of the spam hackers that swamped the social network with a pornographic deluge in recent days, promising “appropriate consequences” to come. “In addition to the engineering teams that build tools to block spam” a Facebook spokesperson told PCMag, “we also have a dedicated enforcement team that has already identified those responsible and is working with our legal team to ensure appropriate consequences follow.” Facebook users were in uproar earlier this week, after photoshopped celebrity porn, images of animal cruelty and content showing extreme violence proliferated across the site. Garmin has launched a new version of its NAVIGON navigation app for iPhone, with v2.0 adding the option to download maps for offline access as well as introducing quarterly map updates. NAVIGON 2.0 for iPhone follows Nokia Maps’ offline mapping with state-by-state downloads in the US (those using the app outside the US will likely get country-by-country download options) so that you can navigate while your data connection is turned off. That’s useful for frequent travelers, who can avoid extortionate roaming costs by downloading the maps for their upcoming destinations to the iPhone’s local storage rather than accessing it over a data connection while there. By splitting the core app and the navigation data, Garmin has also streamlined the update process: rather than everything being downloaded each time a new version is pushed out, only the app changes need be delivered. Samsung has put the second-gen Microsoft Surface SUR40 up for pre-order, with 23 countries – including the US and much of Europe – getting the chance to pick up the slimmed-down multitouch worksurface. Targeted at retail, healthcare, education and hospitality, the Windows 7 based table has a Full HD 1080p 40-inch display covered with a sheet of toughened Gorilla Glass. Less bulky than the first-gen model, the SUR40 can track 50 points of simultaneous touch, including fingers, hands and objects; unlike in the first-gen Surface, with used a camera-based tracking system in the base of the table, this new model’s “PixelSense” system has individual cameras embedded in the pixels themselves. Skype has added Facebook-to-Facebook video call support, allowing users of the social networking site to initiate calls with their webcams to their Facebook contacts. Part of Skype 5.4 Beta for Mac and Skype 5.7 Beta for Windows, once your Skype and Facebook accounts are associated it’s a case of hitting the video call button in Facebook and making sure your hair doesn’t look ridiculous. Previous betas added the ability to read Facebook messages and IM using Facebook Chat, all within Skype. The app also shows recent Facebook updates, and allows you to update your own status, without loading up the browser. The new betas also apparently boost video quality for Mac users, with a new rendering engine for smoother results, along with group screen sharing for both Windows and Mac users (though the former will need a premium account).
