Image
The countdown has officially begun, and not the one leading up to the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but the one that marks the time before the entire world has access to the game so that they might play together online. Over in England at London’s Old Billingsgate Market there’s been a gigantic launch party with music, dancing, and running at high speed as the game was handed out to attendees – or there would have been if 574 Game and Gamestation stores across the country hadn’t also released the game to queues of fans having waited for hours before launch. The world record lies on the line, the entertainment-industry record for most revenue generated in its opening five days having been set by the last Call of Duty game, Black Ops. Now we must lie in wait as more and more contestants join the bigtime battle in individual battles against one another in the most advanced first-person shooter on earth. For those of you that do not know, this game has two kinds of gameplay

Kodak sells its image sensor unit to stay in business

Image
Kodak announced today that it will be selling its image sensor solutions business to Platinum Equity in order to get closer to the cash targets required to keep the company afloat. Last month, Kodak licensed out its projector patents to IMAX for the same reason. The company has been struggling and could go out of business by next year if it doesn’t shore up more money from asset sales. The price of the sale was not disclosed, but Kodak confirmed today that the deal had closed. The company also assured that it was only selling the assets that would not impact its ability to turn itself around into a profitable and sustainable digital company. It would continue to have access to the image sensor technology that was sold as part of the deal. The technology is used in manufacturing a wide range of high performance solid state image sensor devices and applications, including precision manufacturing inspection, digital radiography, earth imaging satellites, traffic monitoring, DNA seque

Sony Music Unlimited gets major update for PS3

Image
Sony released a major update today for its Music Unlimted service that streams music to PlayStation 3 consoles. The update brings an interface overhaul for the service on PS3, but more importantly, adds new music discovery capabilities as well as a “My Channels” feature that lets you customize your music listening experience. The My Channels feature seems to take a page from Pandora, letting you create your own radio stations with songs selected based around your favorite artists. You type in the artist name and the station will automatically be populated with songs from that artist as well as similar songs from other artists. It’s also easier now to skip tracks by simply hitting the “dislike” button to skip to the next. Additionally, your channels can now be fully edited and controlled directly from your PS3 console. You can create new playlists from scratch as well as add and delete songs from existing playlists. These new features are available to both Basic and Premium subscri

Siri hacked to work on iPhone 3GS

Image
We’ve previously seen Apple’s much raved about Siri intelligent assistant feature hacked to work on an iPhone 4, but now developers have managed to hack the feature to work on an old iPhone 3GS. The hack comes from developers Grant Paul and Steve Troughton-Smith, while a video demoing the hack was posted by Ryan Petrich. Petrich is well-known in the jailbreak community for his Activator extension that brings customized gestures for specific apps. The short clip shows him successfully using Siri on the iPhone 3GS to query contact information. He also revealed via Twitter that he is working on integrating Activator with Siri. Apple introduced Siri with the launch of iOS 5, the iCloud, and the iPhone 4S back in October. But the company has made the feature exclusive to the latest generation handset, meaning no Siri for iPhone 4 and any older iPhones. Although Apple didn’t explain the reasoning for that decision, it’s apparently not completely a hardware-related issue since these hack

The two companies have been working towards a closer alliance, having recently inked a deal over Android patent issues. This move by Kim could further strengthen their ties and bring some of Samsung’s success to boost confidence in Windows Phones. Kim revealed the decision in an interview with BGR, stating that his responsibilities at Microsoft will be to “help set the future direction for the Windows Phone platform and to accelerate Microsoft’s trajectory to win the hearts and minds of consumers, carriers, device manufacturers, developers and partners.” He continued to express great confidence in the Windows Phone platform saying, “In my experience, there is an already fervent base of Windows Phone supporters out there and they all get it. They are passionate, and already very vocal about it… so, it is really my new job to make

Google Doodle Marie Curie: a fun fact

Image
Though this Monday, November 7th 2011, Google celebrated the life of Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie, renowned scientist responsible with her husband for discovering radium and polonium, it’s the lesser known facts about this woman and her legacy that might strike you as the most interesting. If you’re a member of the scientific community, especially if you’re studying physics and/or chemistry in a general way, you’ll more than likely already know that Curie’s contributions to the fields are more than notable enough to deserver recognition from Google. What you might NOT know is that because of the low level of awareness of the dangers of working with radioactive materials in her time, the many papers she wrote and the tools she worked with throughout her studies are not safe to touch by humans today. If there’s one thing I love about Marie Curie, it’s how everything she touched turned completely deadly to humans. For real! After more than 100 years, Curie’s remaining belongings and

Pioneer reveals Zypr as free, open alternative to Siri

Image
Pioneer launched a free platform today called Zypr that will offer intelligent voice-controlled assistance features similar to Apple’s Siri. Whereas Siri is currently limited to only the iPhone 4S and will likely still remain limited to iOS over time, Zypr isn’t limited to only one mobile operating system and can be used on smartphones, tablets, and other consumer electronic devices, including in-vehicle entertainment systems, smart TVs, and more. Similar to Siri, Zypr responds to natural voice commands and is able to complete various tasks, such as finding the best local restaurant in your area or telling you what the weather will be like, all without you having to navigate through your phone. But Zyphr gives developers more freedom to integrate features and is a free and open platform that handles all the third-party integrations so that developers don’t have to do that individually. The Zypr API aggregates and manages third-party APIs from services such as Facebook, Twitter, an

Windows Phone six stories tall appears in NYC [Videos]

Image
In a mobile landscape in which it appears that smartphones will just keep getting bigger and bigger, Microsoft has pulled out all the stops, creating this week a six story tall building shapes like a Windows Phone to wow the citizens of the Big Apple. This device is no Windows Phone per say, but a construct made to promote new Windows Phones on AT&T and T-Mobile and will feature different scenes throughout its lifespan such as life-size Plants vs. Zombies and live bands playing music. I’ll take one! Performances will take place (or have already taken place, depending on what time of day it is) by the band Far East Movement in what Microsoft is noting is the music and video hub. inside the “Me” tile, you’ll find a man proposing to his girlfriend as well as a weather reporter talking up the day. Have a peek at the time-lapse video of the construct being built over the course of a couple of days here: This news comes amid another relatively large release for the week: Spotify. W

Windows Phone Mango gets Spotify

Image
This week all you lovers of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform working with the newest version 7.5 Mango have the ability to use Spotify for the first time. Spotify is a streaming music group that works on several mobile platforms and desktop computers, and this version of Spotify promises to be the most optimized version for mobile yet. What you’ll notice first and foremost is the fact that the app looks completely different from any other version of its diverse interface thus far release – Windows Phone intense! You’ll have the same ability to play the tracks that are listed in your account, grab new tracks from the ever-increasing library of tracks Spotify offers. Screens are pulled back and forth like most Windows Phone-centric apps, and sound quality appears to be just fine. You’ll be seeing this app appearing soon for your Mango devices an

iPhone 4S pre-order stock sold out in 10 minutes in Hong Kong

Image
It appears that no matter what you may think of the iPhone 4S and its perceived half-step between 4 and 5, it’s selling like there’s no tomorrow around the world – the latest case of this iPhone fever takes place in Hong Kong, China, where analyst Brian White notes stock sold out in 10 minutes. This device is set to be placed on shelves in Apple stores in Hong Kong starting on November 11th with 14 other countries simultaneously. No word yet on if stock will be dipped into now that pre-orders are dry. Although it’s important to note that no official word has come down from Apple in China of the pre-order stock being depleted entirely, Barron’s does have Ticonderoga Securities’s Brian White noting that his “checks” have indicated the sell out at, once again, 10 minutes flat. Of course White also has some words to say about stock prices surrounding AAPL shares as well: “We believe this rapid sell out … will rest concerns surrounding the uptake of the iPhone 4S in the Greater China reg
