"Video technology will kill brilliant game"

Image
One of the men who blocked the use of technology in football insisted video replays would risk endangering the "brilliant" game. Jonathan Ford, president of the Football Association of Wales, voted with FIFA against any experiments with technology when the matter was raised at a meeting of the game's rulemakers in March. Ford stands by the FAW's position and said it would be a potentially dangerous move to change the game so fundamentally by introducing goal-line technology or video replays. Ford told Press Association Sport: "We have a beautiful game played by millions and millions of people which is the most popular sport in the world. "Why are we wanting to change something so brilliant just on the back of one disallowed goal by England against Germany? "Let's be honest. If it had been Germany that had been denied that goal we would not be having this debate in this country. "If we introduce goal-line technology it will lead to replays and t

Netherlands vs Slovakia Player Ratings

Image
Liow Yi Yang rates the players in Netherlands' comfortable 2-0 victory over Slovakia that ensures them a place in the quarterfinals Netherlands Maarten Stekelenburg - 6.5 Was hardly involved but the Dutch goalkeeper had to alert for two powerful efforts from Slovakia in a period of dominance for them in the second half. Joris Mathijsen - 6 Slovakian attack hardly had a sniff. John Heitinga - 6 Largely untested. Giovanni Van Bronckhorst - 6 Solid shift from the left back. Gregory Van Der Wiel - 6 Assured performance from the young right back who has attracted attention from the likes of Arsenal. Nigel De Jong - 6 Often the unsung hero, De Jong kept things neat and tight and offered good protection to his back four. Mark Van Bommel - 6.5 Tenacious in the engine room of his side. Robin Van Persie - 7 His link up play with his fellow forwards was good but did not carve out any clear opportunities. Wesley Sneijder - 7 Pulled the strings in midfield but made some questionable decisions w

Last 16: Netherlands 2-1 Slovakia

Image
Holland booked a 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final spot after a narrow 2-1 victory over Slovakia in Durban. Arjen Robben opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Wesley Sneijder doubled his team's lead with six minutes remaining. Slovakia scored a consolation goal in stoppage time when Robert Vittek struck from the penalty spot after substitute Martin Jakubko was brought down by Holland goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. Stekelenburg had earlier made a great save from Vittek's close-range strike in the 66th minute to deny Slovakia an equaliser. Holland have now won all four games at the World Cup and will meet the winner of Brazil's clash with Chile on Friday in Port Elizabeth. Today's game at the Moses Mabhida stadium offered two contrasting styles, with Holland pursuing a patient passing game while Slovakia adopted a more direct approach to try to utilise Vittek's pace. Robben earned his first start at the World Cup after recovering from a calf injury and he ter

Netherlands vs Slovakia: Head-to-Head

Image
The high flying Dutch look to continue their 100% record in South Africa against the great unknown Slovakia Although the Netherlands have never played Slovakia, the teams did meet 9 times in Slovakia's previous guise of Czechoslovakia, with the Dutch losing 6 times. The former Czechoslovakia also had a decent World Cup history against the Netherlands, beating them 3-0 way back in 1938. Despite this the Oranje will undoubtedly fancy their chances against the World Cup first timers especially they are on a 22-match unbeaten run and won all three of their group stage matches. The chances of the game being 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes appear to be slim, as the last 49 games Slovakia have been involved in have produced at least one goal. Netherlands World Cup appearances - 9 World Cup titles - 0 (best results 2nd in 1974, 1978) 2010 World Cup so far - 3 Matches played - 3 wins - 5 goals for, 1 goal against - 6 yellow cards / 0 red cards Slovakia World Cup appearances - 1 (2010) World

Brazil vs Chile: Head-to-Head

Samba kings Brazil have history on their side as they prepare to face world cup underdogs Chile in a last-16 clash On paper, World Cup favourites Brazil look to have the upper hand, having lost only seven out of the 65 matches played between the two sides. They also come into this match on a seven game winning streak against their South American neighbours, with 26 goals scored and only three conceded. Chile's last win over Brazil was in 2000 with a 3-0 win in a World Cup qualifier and Chile will be hoping for a repeat of that form in order to progress to their first World Cup quarter-finals since 1962. Upson: I just cannot explain

Image
Matthew Upson has admitted he is at a loss to explain why England performed so badly at the World Cup. The West Ham defender did score on Sunday but his first-half header proved inadequate to threaten Germany, who ran out comfortable 4-1 winners in Bloemfontein. While Joachim Low's men can now look forward to a quarter-final against Argentina in Cape Town - and a rematch of the 1990 final - England are left to rake over the coals of yet another dismal tournament. Fabio Capello refused to contemplate resignation on Sunday night and instead said he intended to speak with Club England chairman Sir David Richards to determine whether the FA retained confidence in the 64-year-old ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, which starts in September. For that, some answers for England's woeful showing need to be found. But Upson admits he has none. "I would love to explain," said Upson. "It is very difficult to analyse all these games and give a reason why X, Y andZ ha

Argentina vs Mexico Player Ratings

Image
Abhishek Mehrotra rates the players as Argentina score a facile group against Mexico in their last-16 encounter. The Mexicans started brightly enough but a poor refeering decision seemed to knock the stuffing out of them. Carlos Tevez was clearly offside when he nodded home Lionel Messi's pass - but the linesman allowed the goal. It was all Argentina after that, although Javier Hernandez grabbed a consolation for the Mexicans with a stunning strike. Argentina Sergio Romero - 5 Was not really involved in the game as Mexico resorted to shooting from distance. Nicolas Otamendi - 6.5 Was surprisingly active on the right flank - linking up effortlessly with Maxi Rodriguez and giving Argentina width. No that they needed it though. Martin Demichelis - 5.5 The blunder prone defender was easily turned by Javier Hernandez. But overall - this was one of his better outings as he shut out Mexican forwards with some alert marking. Nicolas Burdisso - 6 Made sure the Mexican forwards never had any

Lampard baffled by referee

Image
Frank Lampard has called for goal-line technology after being denied an equaliser as England were hammered by Germany. England were trailing 2-1 when Lampard's 20-yard strike hit the underside of the bar and bounced down around a yard over the goal-line. But the match officials allowed play to continue and Germany eventually went on to win 4-1 - a scoreline Lampard believes flattered them. The Chelsea midfielder said: "I haven't seen the goal again but I didn't need to see it again. "I knew straight away that my shot was over the line, clearly a yard or so. "It baffles me that it wasn't given and it was a big deciding factor. "I won't stand here and say it is the reason why we got knocked out. "But if it had gone to 2-2, and we had still come out and played the way we did in the second half, it would have been a different game." Lampard said: "I think it is time to bring in goal-line technology. "We had a meeting before the Wo

Last 16: Argentina 3-1 Mexico

Image
Two goals by Carlos Tevez sent Argentina through to the quarter-finals against a spirited Mexico side. On a day to forget for match officials, the Manchester City striker benefited from an offside decision blunder that was so blatant it ranked alongside the one that denied Frank Lampard in the England game four hours previously. The offside rule states there should be two players between the striker and the goal - there was not even one when Lionel Messi's ball found Tevez's head, and then the net to put Diego Maradona's side in front. After the replay flashed up on the big screen angry Mexico players surrounded the Italian referee Roberto Rosetti and linesman Stefano Ayroldi but the goal stood. Mexico went into meltdown and a defensive howler by Ricardo Osorio allowed Gonzalo Higuain to make it 2-0. It was Tevez who sewed the match up in brilliant fashion - and legitimately this time - early in the second half with Mexico left only to savour a stunning reply by Manchester

German sympathy for England

Image
Germany coach Joachim Low and man of the match Thomas Muller both agreed that Frank Lampard's goal should have been given. The incident happened in the 38th minute, with Germany leading 2-1, when Frank Lampard's shot lobbed over keeper Manuel Neuer, crashed off the crossbar and bounced two feet beyond the goal-line. The linesman however deemed the ball had not crossed the line and England were denied parity. England coach Fabio Capello claimed that goal had changed the course of the game which Germany went on to win 4-1. His counterpart Low agreed that the goal was legitimate. "It should have been given," he said. Muller, who scored two goals that put the game beyond England, said: "We heard the ball was behind the line. It was a bit of luck, which we had to seize with both hands." That they did. Meanwhile, German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said:"I tried not to react to the referee and just concentrate on what was happening - it was difficult. I knew it wa

Cole: Too much politics at Chelsea

Image
Joe Cole wants to sort out his club future after claiming an unhappy final season at Chelsea was down to "political rather than footballing reasons". Cole was "devastated" after England's World Cup campaign came to and end via a 4-1 reversal against Germany in Bloemfontein. But now he wants to turn his attention to where he will be playing next season after the end of his spell at Stamford Bridge. Inter Milan and Arsenal are amongst the clubs being linked with a move for Cole. Cole said: "I want to get my future sorted as quickly as possible. "My season for Chelsea wasn't great for what I believe were political reasons rather than footballing reasons. "Carlo Ancelotti, I love him, I've got big respect for him. I don't want to go on into it now. It isn't the time. "It is not financial and it is nothing to do with Carlo. I love Carlo. I think he is a top guy and a top manager. "I loved my time at Chelsea, I love the fans bu
