AC Milan cool off Fabiano talks

Image
AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has but the brakes on a possible move for Luis Fabiano. Speculation is rife that Luis Fabiano is set to move to the San Siro, with his agent declaring that "either he goes to Milan immediately or he stays at Sevilla one more year". The 29-year-old has one more year left on his contract and, if he does not renew, Sevilla would prefer to sell him this summer than risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season. Galliani, however, is remaining tight-lipped. "Let's leave Luis Fabiano be, he's playing in the World Cup and belongs to Sevilla. There are no negotiations going on," said Galliani. "In order to come here a great or very great player has to leave Milan. And for me Luis Fabiano is a very great player. "However, we don't make big-name players leave." Galliani insists Milan have to sell before they buy. "The arrivals have to be in proportion to those who leave," continued the Milan

Mimio unveils 10-inch IMO Mini-Monster touch screen

Image
I have talked about the cool Mimi USB connecting displays before. Typically, the displays are smallish little units that you can use to show information from your computer on a separate screen without taking up too much space on your desk. Mimi Monitors has announced a new USB connecting screen called the IMO Mini-Monster with a much larger 10-inch screen. The screen retails for $259.99 and measures 10.1-inches. The resolution for the screen is 1024 x 600 and it has a brightness of 350 cd/m2. The contrast ratio is 400:1 and the screen connects via USB 2.0. Overall dimensions of the screen are 9.7″ x 6.3″ x 1″ and it weighs 1.77 pounds. Other features include a dual port USB hub, stylus with holding slot, and a fold out stand.

Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile Officially Announced

Image
Tonight is the night for Samsung announcements, apparently. The Samsung Epic 4G was just announced for Sprint, and now here we are officially unveiling the Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile USA. It’s missing the physical keyboard that the Epic 4G has, but other than that, we’re basically looking at the same thing. Taking the best features of the Samsung Galaxy S, and tagging on a new name for a different market, T-Mobile’s getting ready to launch their next superphone. The Samsung Vibrant features a 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. Physically speaking, you should expect a slender device, with a 5MP camera on the back that can take video up to 720p. You’ll have capacitive touch buttons on the front as well, which is exactly like the Galaxy S. Also similar is the 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird applications processor underneath the hood, making sure everything ticks along. You’ll be using Android 2.1, along with Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz 3.0 User Interface. You’ll have GPS, WiFi,

Samsung Epic 4G Official for Sprint

Image
One might imagine that this had come out of left field, but if you’ll recall, we’ve actually seen this phone before. It broke cover thanks to a tipster, and while we had originally put the moniker Galaxy S Pro on it, obviously Sprint and Samsung had a different agenda. Courtesy of Sprint, we’ve got official word that the Samsung Epic 4G (have to love the new trend, right?) is indeed coming “soon,” and it’s packing quite a mean punch. The Epic 4G is the first 4G-capable device to feature a full, landscape-slider QWERTY keyboard. Not only that though, they’re sticking with the Samsung Galaxy S’ lineage, and packing a full 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display. Under the hood, you’ll find a 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird application processor. You’re also getting your hands on Android 2.1, and from what we can tell, Samsung’s proprietary User Interface, TouchWiz 3.0 for good measure.

HTC Wildfire Review

Image
The HTC Wildfire is the company’s second attempt at a budget Android device, its predecessor being the underspecified and relatively unloved Tattoo. Packing the same Sense UI as more expensive siblings like the Legend and Desire, together with a 5-megapixel camera and a multitouch-capable display, does the Wildfire manage to be both affordable and feature-rich? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. It’s hard to argue with the specifications, certainly. At the launch of the Wildfire, HTC told us they’d pushed their engineers – and suppliers – hard to pack as much as possible into the smartphone without driving up the price. To that end, you get a 3.2-inch display, like the Legend, only using a QVGA resolution LCD panel rather than the aluminum phone’s HVGA AMOLED; you also get a capacitive touchscreen, rather than the resistive touchscreen of the Tattoo. There’s also 384MB of RAM paired with a 528MHz Qualcomm processor; well below the 1GHz chips we’re seeing on many new An

HTC Using Super TFT LCD Displays to Reinforce Dwindling Stock

Image
If you haven’t read the review of the Droid Incredible , or the HTC Desire, then we’ll add the main draw of those phones right here (even though you should go read them, anyway): Their 3.7-inch AMOLED displays are amazing. Unless you plan on using your device in direct sunlight all the time, AMOLED is definitely one of the best displays out there (yes, Super AMOLED is better). But, it’s been rough for HTC to keep their latest AMOLED-toting device in stock, and a lot of that has to do with that screen. Changes are afoot, though, which may help people out there aching to get their hands on the Droid Incredible they’ve purchased before the end of July. First and foremost, HTC is still planning on using AMOLED displays. They are in no way completely phasing them out of their future plans. However, they have to b realistic: As of right now, the Droid Incredible is currently on back-order until the end of July, and as far as we’ve heard, there’s no telling when that will steady itself. So, w

IC Social Communicaton Tool Makes Communicating to Loved Ones Easy

Image
Keeping in touch with people that you know can be pretty easy now-a-days. After all, you probably have at least a couple of devices on you at all times that can get in touch with someone , somewhere at any given moment. But, as technology continues to progress, it may seem like some of the older folks out there are getting left in the dust. And while we know that there’s plenty of “old timers” out there that can use today’s gadgets just fine, sometimes you just want something simple and intuitive enough to make talking to your grandmother or grandfather uncomplicated. That’s where the IC Social Communication Tool comes in. Yeah, it has a long name, but that doesn’t mean it’s a complicated tool. It’s just a concept right now, based on a project by a guy named Mikael. It’s designed to be “dummy proof,” and specifically meant to make electronic communication easier. Basically, you put in a contact, put all the relevant information you have about that contact (like phone number, email ad

Plastic Logic QUE proReader Delayed Again, Now Canceling Pre-Orders

Image
The QUE proReader from Plastic Logic has a torrid past. With so many missed delivery dates and delays under their belt, we’re not sure if anyone even has them in mind anymore. Today, Plastic Logic came back into the lime light for a minute, but not to talk any kind of good news, unfortunately. What’s the deal now? Well, apparently they’re pushing back the launch of the QUE proReader again. And, if you’ve got a pre-order, well. You probably don’t anymore. “We’ve been working hard to bring the world’s first product based on plastic electronics technology to market — and have decided that delaying the device a bit longer will result in a better product for you. With that in mind, we need to let you know that since your unit will not ship on June 24 as planned, our automated ordering system has automatically cancelled your order. We do hope, however, that you will stay on our list of customers interested in knowing about our progress and details of our upcoming product shipment. If you’d

Blu-ray 100GB & 128GB BDXL Specification Finalized

Image
The Blu-ray Disc Association seems to be keeping right on track with those original projections we mentioned back in April. The BDXL specification was originally designed with medical imaging and broadcast elements in mind, specifically, but we imagine that with all of the extra space the BDA is shoving into these discs, plenty of other outlets are going to jump all over it. We’d say there’s not much different here, but that would be an understatement. There are still two sizes included in the new specification: a triple-layer 100GB version, which is either re-writable or write-once. Or there’s the 128GB quad-layer version, which is only write-once. Don’t think that your current Blu-ray player is going to be able to handle all these awesome layers in its current state, though. Yes, with these upgrades to the discs themselves, and with the BDA throwing layer after layer into them, you’re going to start having to pinch your pennies now to afford the hardware equipment you’ll need to act

Sprint Android 2.2 update for HTC EVO 4G due “in near future”

Image
Sprint has confirmed that an update for the HTC EVO 4G is in the works, that will update the WiMAX-capable smartphone to Android 2.2 Froyo as rumored earlier in the week. The new firmware will bring Flash support to the EVO 4G’s browser along with Bluetooth voice dialling and improved Exchange ActiveSync support, as we’ve seen on other Android 2.2 devices. Meanwhile, judging by Sprint’s phrasing, the EVO 4G won’t be the only 2.2 device the carrier has planned. “As work on finalizing the software is underway, Sprint expects to launch Android 2.2 in the near future. It will also be available as an upgrade on the recently launched HTC EVO 4G. With the Android 2.2 upgrade, customers can expect improvements to include the following benefits among others: updates to user interface, improved EAS Support, improved browser performance including Flash 10x Support, voice dialing over Bluetooth and application storage on external memory” Sprint Which other handsets will get an update remains to

iOS4 downgrade guide to 3.1.3 saves sluggish iPhones

Image
When iOS4 was released earlier this week, it seemed like a no-brainer for iPhone 3GS, 3G and iPod touch owners to update: after all, free software and boosted features can’t be argued with, right? Unfortunately for many users its turned out to be less impressive than expected, with some handsets now running sluggishly, battery life taking a significant dip and in general the whole experience being sub-par. Apple may well update iOS4 for these earlier devices and iron out some of the hassles, but until then Lifehacker has a handy guide for downgrading back to iOS 3.1.3. Basically, it requires digging out a copy of iOS 3.1.3 – which is probably backed up on whatever computer you use with iTunes, but if not is available online – then using the regular firmware update tools and some third-party software called RecBoot to roll back from iOS4. It’ll be handy if you have an old 3.1.3 backup from just before you updated to iOS4, too, since otherwise you won’t be able to restore your apps b

Airvana Femto Family Tablet hands-on

Image
Femtocells: simple home cellular base stations that let you make a call when you’re indoors and you can’t persuade Verizon, AT&T or any of the other carriers to boost their coverage, right? Not if Airvana have their way; the company – who already supply carriers like Sprint with their Airave femto , and who are tipped to be readying a VoIP-capable model for the network – are hoping to turn personal base stations into connected home multimedia hubs, intelligently managing a family’s communications and potentially shepherding in more touchscreen tablets. We caught up with the company to find out why smart femtos are the way forward. A little background first: a femtocell is basically a domestic or small-office scale cellular base station, that hooks up to your broadband connection and creates a localized area of 2G or 3G coverage (depending on model). Your cellphone automatically pairs with the femto as if it were a regular base station – usually with some sort of pre-registration so

Club3D gets on the GTX 465 bandwagon

Image
I guess it’s better late than never for Club3D . The company has announced that it is now offering the GTC 465 video card from NVIDIA. The GTX 465 started turning up back in May. The Club3D card has all the features that we know from other branded GTX 465 cards. It is 3D Vision ready and supports CUDA among other things. The GPU runs at 607MHz and the card has 352 stream processors. The shader clock runs at 1215MHz and the card supports 3-way SLI. 1024MB of graphics memory are featured and that RAM is GDDR5 running at 3206MHz. The card uses traditional air cooling and supports DirectX 11. Like all other GTX 465 cards it is a dual slot card and uses the PCI-E 2.0 interface. The Club3D version has a mini HDMI output and is HDCP ready.

Duracell expands compatibility for MyGrid charging kit

Image
Last September we got our hands on the MyGrid wireless charging system from Duracell . The system is very similar to other wireless charging solutions on the market from WildCharge and others. Duracell announced this week that it was expanding the compatibility of the MyGrid charging system to work with other mobile devices. Duracell reports that it is now offering kits for Apple devices and for mobile phones that charge via micro-USB ports. The micro-USB port chargers are small devices that plug into the port on the side of the phone and have a plate on the rear for drawing power from the charging pad. Duracell makes no specific mention of the iPhone 4, but I would assume a case for it would be coming soon.

OWC Data Doubler replaces MacBook optical drive with extra HDD

Image
If you are a MacBook user that rarely uses the optical drive on your machine, but routinely runs out of storage space on your HDD inside the notebook, OWC has a new product for you. The device is called the OWC Data Doubler . The Data Doubler is an optical to SATA HDD converter bracket kit that sells for $79.99. The bracket allows you to add up to an extra 640GB HDD or SSD to the inside of the MacBook. Any 9.5mm tall 2.5-inch SATA SSD or HDD will fit inside the bracket. You apparently have to open your Mac up and remove the optical drive and install the bracket into the bay. You can then use the Apple disk Utility program to set up and partition the new drive. Once the bracket is installed, you can use the drive for Time Machine, a RAID array, or one large SPAN volume. There are several bracket models available to fit different MacBook models.

Patriot backs the kits with a lifetime warranty.

StealthArmor squashes iPhone 4 signal issue [Update: Not so fast!]

Image
While telling customers “you’re not holding your iPhone 4 properly” doesn’t exactly seem the best way to endear yourself, with hundreds of thousands of handsets in the wild Apple look unlikely to do anything more constructive than tell us where to grip. One solution users have discovered is Apple’s Bumper case, but Fusion of Ideas have an alternative if you’re more interested in keeping your smartphone’s clean, rubber-free lines. They’ve sent us some shots of their StealthArmor for iPhone 4 edge protection strips, which not only protect the stainless steel from scratches but have the neat side-effect of bypassing the antenna issue. Update: We’ve now tested the strips, and things aren’t as clear cut as Fusion of Ideas might suggest. More after the cut. We’ve covered StealthArmor before, reviewing the company’s protective films for the iPad, and if you’ve seen our iPhone 4 unboxing then you’ll have already spotted the custom panels they’ve done for the new smartphone. The important b

Fusion Garage criticized for JooJoo software GPL failure

Image
Fusion Garage are coming in for some criticism over their handling of the JooJoo tablet’s software, with open-source advocates discovering that the company aren’t distributing their source code as required by the GPL. Matthew Garrett spent some hands-on time with the JooJoo recently, and aside from some concerns over the hardware – “pretty much held together by string and a following wind” is how he describes the slate – his biggest complaint is that not only is the source for Fusion Garage’s modified Ubuntu OS not available, when he contacted them they told him they’re not yet distributing it. “We are still actively making changes to the joojoo software. We will make the source release available once we feel we are ready to do so and also having the resources to get this sorted out and organized for publication. We seek your kind understanding on our position and appreciate your patience on this. Thank you.” JooJoo support team, Fusion Garage As for the hardware, Garrett suggests it

iPhone 4 Launch Day Wrap-Up

Image
Well, you survived. At least, we hope you did, with some semblance of your sanity left over. If you were one of the many, many people out there to stand waiting in a line to get your hands on the latest and greatest gadget from the ridiculously smart minds at Cupertino, then hopefully you’re busy enjoying it as we write this. What is this, you might ask? Well, as you could probably glean from the title, it’s a wrap-up of all the craziness that was today. And yes, it was crazy . To be fair, but not too ridiculous here, we’re going to actually start at the end of yesterday, June 23rd. Why? Because we’ve got to point out that when Apple announced the iPhone 4 , there were two variations: white and black. And, while the black obviously still holds the major details of the iPhone 4, the white one attracted plenty of attention in of itself. Unfortunately for everyone who wants one, we already know that the white one wasn’t available at launch. But, what made it worse, was the announcement t

European Union Plans for Huge Solar Farm in Sahara Desert to Power Europe

Image
We can safely say that there’s all sorts of implementations for solar power . Even today, we saw what it could dofor a soccer ball. But, let’s take things a bit bigger, shall we? Start looking at the big picture, more or less. And with as grand of plans as the European Union seems to have, it may not get any bigger than this. Here’s a statistic you may be interested in knowing: If only 1% of the Sahara Desert was covered in solar panels, it would generate enough energy to power the entire world. So, we’ve got to ask: why hasn’t something like this been thought of before? If the European Union has its way, then in the next five years, a giant solar panel farm is going to be constructed within the desert in question, and will be expanded gradually throughout the decades that follow. The beginning stages will prove troublesome, as the EU needs to figure out means to get the energy from the desert to homes in Europe. While they do that, it sounds like they’re only going to be able to move

Texas Instruments Blaze Tablet Available This August

Image
We’ve had a lot of things to cover when it comes to Texas Instruments‘ OMAP4 , especially when it has anything to do with that Blaze name. From our hands-on time with the previously released OMAP Blaze, which happened twice, to the general overview of the device we provided earlier in the year, it’s one of the more exciting pieces of technology out there. And now, Texas Instruments is cramming all of the goodness of that Blaze moniker into, that’s right, a tablet! We just caught wind of the Blaze tablet, which features Texas Instruments’ OMAP4. Designed specifically around the Blaze development platform, which in of itself is designed to maximize software compatibility. In the tablet, you can make room for a cellular modem, WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS, and even FM connectivity. They’re all reconfigurable, using the same sockets as the Blaze development platform. The Blaze tablet will also support new features and applications, thanks to the multiple external camera modules, as well as the ext

Android 2.2 Froyo for x86 coming this summer

Image
ntel expect to release a version of Android 2.2 suitable for x86 based devices such as Atom tablets and netbooks within the next few months, in the expectation that the popular OS’ availability will encourage use of their own chips rather than those of rival ARM in netbooks and tablets. Speaking to APC, Intel VP of software and services, Renee James, explained that “our expectation is that (native x86 Android) will be based on the Froyo release and will be available this summer to developers.” Not only will Intel be providing the code to their developer partners, but they’ll also be making it available to anyone who wants to tinker with Android. ”All of the (x86) code will be fed back into the open branch that will be created for x86″ James explains, suggesting that Intel’s experience of Linux work in the past meant that creating the new x86 Android release “wasn’t tremendously difficult”.

Pandigital Novel pulled for a month-long firmware fix

Image
Fresh news out of Pandigital today, finally responding to the is-it-a-recall controversy of recent weeks, and who are now saying that the Novel touchscreen ereader won’t be back in stores for around a month. The Digital Reader has been told by the company that they’ve using this opportunity to re-examine the firmware and make sure it’s really ready for public consumption this time around. “In going through the fix,” the unnamed spokesperson claims, “we’re taking extra time to make sure it’s absolutely final before we send it out.” She also comments on the black hardware which was spotted crossing the FCC, and confirms that it is indeed another version of the Novel. Apparently the initial plan had been to release the white first and then follow up with the black; however this new firmware delay has changed that somewhat: “At this point, we have two products that have both been in development for the past few months. We will be selling them both to various retailers. The original pla

Lexar 24-in-1 USB memory card reader plays nice with iPad

Image
Lexar have outed their latest multi-format memory card reader, compatible with 24 different types of flash storage, and they’re particularly excited by how easy it is to hook up to an iPad’s USB/Dock Connector adapter and import photos straight onto the Apple tablet. In fact, Lexar’s director of marketing, Jeff Cable, was so excited he drove straight down to the beach to take photos of a pretty lady with a surfboard, just so he could demonstrate the functionality on video. As well as transferring files to your iPad, when plugged into a regular computer you can transfer files between memory cards; we’re assuming each of the five slots simply shows up as a separate drive. All the common formats are supported, including microSD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick and more; the full list is in the press release below. The Lexar Multi-Card 24-in-1 USB Reader is available now, priced at $29.99.

Nokia confirms Nseries MeeGo move

Image
Nokia has officially confirmed that it is, indeed, switching its high-end Nseries devices to the MeeGo operating system once the Nokia N8 is out of the way. Reported yesterday by way of an aside from a Nokia Australia rep – and prompting doubt from many Nokia watchers – spokesperson Doug Dawson from the Finnish company toldReuters today that “Going forward, N-series devices will be based on MeeGo.” MeeGo is a collaborative effort between Nokia and Intel, combining the former’s Maemo work – as most recently released on the N900 – and the latter’s Moblin project. It will presumably first debut on the Nokia N9, tipped to be a companion device for the N8, adding in a hardware QWERTY keyboard among other things.

iPhone 4 external antenna causing dropped calls?

Image
There was no shortage of applause when Steve Jobs revealed that the iPhone 4 ’s slender build was in no small part down to shifting the UMTS, GSM, Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS antennas to the outer stainless steel rim of the smartphone, but that decision may be coming back to haunt the company. As we reported yesterday, some new users were claiming that holding their iPhone 4 at certain points led to dropped calls and zero bars of signal strength on-screen. If anything, the complaints are getting louder – especially from those who generally hold their phone in their left hand – and stories as to what might be causing the issue are being to emerge. Over at ZDNet Rupert Goodwins has put together a decent explanation – which doesn’t require a degree in engineering – that explains why the issue might be happening. Basically, to improve reception Apple chose to put their aerials on the outside, and now they’re subject to the conductive interference of users’ hands. “Now, it is possible to hav

Scientists find way to turn old LCDs into infection fighting material

Image
The sheer amount of electronic waste that is generated globally is a big problem. Many parts can be recycled for their precious metals and raw materials and new breakthroughs in recycling electronics are be researched. A team of scientists at the University of York have announced a cool discovery that has found a way to deal with discarded LCDs. The university’s chemistry department discovered a way to turn the PVA inside discarded TVs and LCDs into a substance with anti-microbial properties . PVA is also useful for other medical needs because it is compatible with human tissue. The university team envisions uses for the PVA from the LCDs for things like hospital cleaning products among other uses.

Enthusiast favorite Corsair was number eight on the top ten list with 3.5% of the market.

Cirago unveils new tiny Bluetooth 3.0 USB adapters

Image
Bluetooth connectivity is ubiquitous today with cars, computers, and game consoles all sporting the connectivity option. Despite how common Bluetooth is in consumer products, there are still a number thin and cheap notebooks and netbooks that ship lacking Bluetooth. The best way to add Bluetooth to machines lacking the feature or to machines with older Bluetooth specifications is with a small USB adapter like the new Cirago BTA3310 or BTA6310 . The 3310 has a range of 33 feet while the 6310 has a Bluetooth range of about 330 feet. Both of the adapters are Bluetooth 3.0 compliant and support EDR with 2Mbps and 3Mbps modulation modes. The 3310 adapter sells for $29.99 and the 6310 adapter sells for $39.99 and both will hit stores by the end of June.

Razer outs awesome Tron keyboard and mouse chocked full o’ win

Image
As a child of the 80, you can bet I watched Tron enough times to wear out the old VHS. I love that movie and blew more than a few weeks’ allowance playing the arcade game at the corner gas station. With the new Tron flick set to launch soon there are all manner of new toys and other items coming to market to rekindle those childhood memories. Razer has a couple Tron gaming peripherals coming to market, and they are very cool the accessories include the Tron: Legacy gaming mouse and a gaming keyboard. The mouse is a 5600 dpi unit with a 3.5g gaming grade sensor. That slick keyboard is festooned with programmable keys, macro recording capabilities, and a detachable number pad like the Microsoft SideWinder X6. Naturally, the peripherals will have glowing blue stripes. Pricing is set for $79 to $139 and availability is unknown.
