Apple expected to take top smartphone vendor crown for 2011

Image
Apple has been coming on strong in the smartphone market with raging popularity of the iPhone around the world. Apple was able to pass Nokia not long ago to become the largest smartphone vendor based on shipments during Q2 2011. Nokia did hold it off for the more important sales to end users though for the quarter. That is predicted to change for the full 2011 calendar year according to research from DigiTimes. DigiTimes reports that Apple will take the top spot among all global smartphone vendors based on projections for calendar year 2011. Apple is expected to have 19% of the global smartphone market with shipments of 86.4 million units. While Apple is booming Nokia is sliding significantly with shipments predicted to drop by 25% for the year. A 25% decline in shipments would put Nokia at about 75 million handsets shipped for the year. Samsung is also growing strong thanks to the popularity of its Android smartphone and it is expected to pass HTC and RIM. It won’t reach Nokia or Appl

Atari may be planning its own iPad game controller called Atari Arcade

Image
The iPad is certainly a cool gaming device with all sorts of games that are available to suit any gamer need. One of the apps that old school gamers that like retro gaming with games from the 80′s would like the cool Atari Classics app that puts a bunch of old games in one place. The problem is that old school games need a big joystick with a red ball on the end and big buttons to get the full effect. So far, the only thing for the iPad like this is the cool Ion iCade arcade cabinet we have seen before. It appears that Atari is planning on offering its own controller for the iPad called the Atari Arcade Duo Powered joystick. As of this moment, the controller hasn’t been made official, but there is a photo of what the thing might look like. While we don’t have any specs on the device, I would assume that the controller uses Bluetooth to connect. One thing that I like better about the Atari device than the Ion iCade is that the Atari controller will let you do portrait and landscape. The

DigiNotar hacker brags via Pastebin and claims to be Comodo hacker

Image
This morning I wrote a story about the roughly 300,000 Iranian citizens who may have had their Gmail emails accounts monitored by the Iranian government using one of the bogus security certificates that came from the DigiNotar hack. I also briefly mentioned that the same hacker that attacked Comodo earlier this year had claimed responsibility. F-secure has been keeping an eye on the Pastebin account of the hacker and the hacker has now posted a message to the account titled striking back. The hacker claims that he did in fact infiltrate Comodo and DigiNotar. He also claims in the message to have control of four other high-profile certificate authorities. As proof that he hacked the DigiNotar account the hacker offered up the domain administrator password for DigiNotar’s network. Whether or not that password is legitimate, only DigiNotar knows. What do you think authorities should do to this hacker once the person is caught?

BMW working on laser lights for future vehicles

Image
BMW was among the first carmakers out there to start using LED lights for headlights and other lights. The LEDs are great because they use less power and they are able to last much longer than your typical automotive lighting. BMW is working on what it calls the next logical step in automotive lighting with laser lighting. The lights are expected to come to market within a few years. The laser light could bring with it new light functions with more comfort and safety when driving. The lights can contribute significantly to higher degree of efficiency in energy and fuel savings. BMW notes that laser light is monochromatic and is known as coherent light so the waves are uniform and have a constant phase difference. That means that the lights can create a near-parallel beam with intensity a thousand times that of LEDs in use today. The laser beams would use less power as well making them more green and ideal for EVs running from a battery. BMW says that unlike some of the laser pointers o

DVDO Mobile HD travel kit charges gadgets and shoots HD video to TVs and more

Image
If you travel a lot and need a portable charger that you can take with you to keep your gear juiced up and you also like to stream media from your phone to a larger screen, check this out. A company called DVDO has a new product that has debuted that is an all-in-one MHL-HDMI adapter and multi-charger for gadgets. The adapter has wired HD connectivity with a HDMI output. The device is designed to eliminate the tangle of cables that often goes with working on the road. The device will send a HD signal out to a TV, projector, or computer screen and allows the TV or projector remote to control a MHL-enabled smartphone or tablet for hands free operation. The TV or projector connected to the device has to support HDMI CEC for the remote control function to work. The DVDO Mobile has an integrated 20-inch USB-A connector and an 8-inch micro USB connector as well. The HDMI cable is 36-inches long and the adapter can connect to computers as well to allow data transfer between the connected devi

Judge demands iPad sales stats to consider Samsung ban

Image
Apple may have to detail US and UK sales figures of the iPad and iPad 2 if it wants to secure a ban against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the Australian market, the company has been told, with a judge demanding hard evidence that the launch of Samsung’s slate has had a negative affect. “Unless Apple puts on evidence showing the impact in the US or UK, I can’t draw any positive assumptions” Federal court Justice Annabelle Bennett told the Sydney Federal Court on Tuesday, Bloomberg reports, though denied Samsung’s request for a forced disclosure. Instead, the judge left the decision whether or not to reveal the stats up to Apple, though it was made relatively clear that without them its case would be a tougher sell. Apple’s legal team argues that the “remarkable similarity of the Samsung product” means it will steal sales from the iPad; Samsung, meanwhile, claims that those buying an Android tablet actually want an Android tablet, and as such the Galaxy Tab 10.1 “is not impacting the sales of A

Stolen DigiNotar SSL certs used to monitor Google email conversations of up to 300k Iranians

Image
I mentioned yesterday that the Dutch company DigiNotar had been hacked back in July. The company though that it had revoked all the bogus certificates, but only recently admitted that the hack had happened and that it had missed stolen certs that would allow the impersonation of Google services like Gmail. Those missed certificates have now been used to spy on Gmail messages of 300,000 Iranians. According to one report, the spying on Gmail conversations was conducted by Iran. The list of affected users has been passed to Google to allow it to tell the Iranians that their government may have been spying on them. The report on the breach was published August 30 by Fox-IT, the company called in to analyze the breach for DigiNotar. More than 99% of the 300,000 IP addresses that connected to Gmail service with a fake security cert were in Iran. The Fox-It report claims that the hackers were able to access internal systems at DigiNotar a month before the company took action to block the hack

Dell and Baidu are working together on tablet computers and mobile phones

Image
In China, the Baidu search engine is the most popular and widely used. Google operates in China as well, but is second place behind Baidu. China is also one of the fastest growing markets for tablets and has one of the largest mobile phone using populations on the planet. Dell is teaming up with Baidu to make new mobile phones and tablet computers for the Chinese market. The phones would apparently be branded with the Baidu name, which is one of the largest brands in the country. Dell hopes that the tie up with one of the largest brands in China will help jump start its ailing tablet and smartphone business. Some analysts don’t think the tie up will help Dell that much with one saying China is still Apple’s market and that this is just Dell “grasping at straws.” Dell has offered no time line on when the devices will launch. However, Reuters reports that a Chinese outlet is saying the products could come as early as November. Dell and Baidu are already working together on a Baidu brande

Rapid prototype shoe for women is perfect for squares

Image
I bet there are a bunch of geeky gals out there that read SlashGear; this one is just for you. Objet Ltd is showing off a new item that it has made using 3D printing for rapid prototyping. The new product is high-heeled shoe that is made with interchangeable parts that can be replaced when needed. The shoe is very square and seems ugly to me. I don’t see my wife wearing these. The shoe is dubbed the “Rapidprototypedshoe” and was made using the Objet multi-material 3D printing technique. The shoe designer was Marloes ten Bhomer. The shoe was printed in one build and has a hard heel and a flexible upper. The printing tech that Objet 3D uses can combine materials like rubber and rigid material into a single prototype that is used extensively in the footwear industry. The wild looking shoe will be on display at an exhibition called Power of Making that starts today at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The part of this design that I find most intruding is the modular nature. I think

Sony unveils new special edition Dualshock 3 controllers for PS3 in Japan

Image

The first of the special controllers is called urban camo. This controller will hit on November 17 and will only be available for a limited time. The price for the Dualshock 3 wireless controller in urban camouflage color will be 5,500 yen. The controller is aimed at the player that is a big fan of games like Metal Gear Solid and the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker HD Edition that will hit Japan in November. Other than the color, the controller is the same as all others. Fans of the coming game Uncharted – Atlantis Sleeps in the Desert will also be able to get a themed controller for that game too. The controller is beige and brown with a map design on the top surface of the controller. The special edition controllers will be limited production and will sell for 9,980 yen. It will hit stores on November 2. The controller

Amazon Kindle tablet November launch looks increasingly likely

Image
More signs of a November launch for the Amazon Kindle tablet, as supply chain checks suggest that the bulk order of touch panel controller ICs used in the upcoming 7-inch slate should be in the retailer’s hands – or, at least, those of its assembly partner – by the end of that month. ILI Technology (aka Ilitek) is supplying Amazon with 5m controller ICs, the Commercial Times reports, expected to show up in the $250 tablet that the online retailer hopes will best Apple’s iPad. Supposed hands-on reports with prototypes of the tablet earlier this month suggested that Amazon was expecting the device to ship before the end of November. As well as offering Kindle ebook access, it will also be positioned as a multimedia consumption tool thanks to bundled access to Amazon Prime streaming and MP3 cloud storage access. Amazon is believed to have heavily customized a smartphone iteration of Android, rather than using Honeycomb, locking the OS down with its own custom UI and removing support for t

Sony 3D display and 3D glasses for PS3 to hit Japan in November

Image
We have already talked a bit about why you should buy the Sony PS3 3D display and 3D glasses a while back. Sony Japan has announced that the display and the 3D glasses will be shipping soon in Japan. The official pricing for the products has also been unveiled for Japan. The 3D display comes bundled with one pair of glasses and the HDMI cable you need to connect to your PS3 console. The HDMI cable is 2-meters long. That 3D screen is a 24-inch offering that has full HD resolution. One special feature of the screen is that it has quad-speed frame sequential display tech inside. It has a contrast ratio of 5000:1 and 176-degree viewing angles with a 4ms response time and will work for 2D images as well. Inside the display are dual channel stereo speakers and a subwoofer for quality sound. The display is 35mm thick and uses edge-lit LED technology. The coolest feature is that the screen has SimulView so two people can see individual images on the screen. The 3D glasses are active and use a

Epson outs Stylus NX430 Small-in-One printer

Image
Epson has rolled out a new printer that will go perfectly with that space saving AIO computer you have. The new Epson printer is the NX430 and while it is an all in one printer, Epson calls the printer a small-in-one because of its small size. The machine measures in at 15.4″ x 11.8″ x 5.7″ and it weighs 9 pounds. That makes the printer considerably smaller than other AIO printers on the market. The printer is fully featured as well. It has integrated Epson Wireless connectivity to allow the user to print directly from their network. The wireless connectivity supports networks up to 802.11n speed. The NX430 also supports cloud printing and it can print email sent from a smartphone as well as photos, documents, and websites. The printer has a 2.5-inch LCD and smart touch panel for selecting and printing photos. It has separate color ink cartridges and the inks are instant drying to prevent smears and smudges. The ink is also water resistant on all paper types. The printer has tech to co

Hitachi GST unveils 1TB per platter HDDs

Image
Hitachi has started to ship its latest HDD called the Deskstar 7K1000.D globally. The coolest thing about the new HDD is that the drive has 1TB of storage space crammed onto a single platter. The HDD comes in both Deskstar and CinemaStar flavors with a storage capacity for the line of 250GB – 1TB in versions that spin at 7,200 RPM and low-RPM CoolSpin versions. Hitachi has a new 7mm thick z-height Travelstar HDD as well with 1TB of storage that is aimed at desktops and mobile computing. The Deskstar 7K1000.D HDD has a 6Gb/second SATA interface and a 32MB cache buffer. The drive is also designed to conserve power with 15% power savings at idle compared to other HDDs. The Deskstar 5K1000.B is even more power efficient with lower operating speed and saves 23% power at idle compared to the previous drives. The CinemaStar line is aimed at HD, IPTV, and Internet TV as well as the DVR market. This market is dominated by single platter HDDs and the new 1TB per platter drives will be very good

LG, Philips and Sharp form Smart TV open-app alliance

Image
LG, Philips and Sharp have joined Smart TV forces to create a common, open-standards based app development platform that will allow coders to create one version of their software to run on sets from all three manufacturers. A beta of the common SDK is expected to be released in early October, using HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV along with the promise that an app which runs on, say, one of Sharp’s Aquos Net+ sets will also run on one of LG or Philips’ Smart TV sets. Currently, while several manufacturers have smart TV offerings, most use different approaches to how applications are developed. That forces coders to either stick to a single brand or spend time porting their apps between platforms; meanwhile, other approaches – such as Google TV - are yet to even support third-party software. The TV trio have mobile-style success in their sights, with Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics describing the deal as “a major step towards creating an app market every bit as inventive and dy

Wary Ultrabook vendors dip toes with tiny stock orders

Image
Ultrabooks weren’t in short supply at IFA 2011 last week – Toshiba, Acer and Lenovo all brought their new models to the show – but while publicly each is gung-ho about the segment, on the production line it’s a far more tentative story. Each intends to produce less than 50,000 ultrabook units initially, DigiTimes‘ sources claim, predicting lackluster demand in Q4. The cause of their reticence is apparently two-fold. First is the nigh-unstoppable Apple juggernaut, with expectations that the Cupertino company’s MacBook Air will continue to dominate ultraportable sales in the near future. Second, however, is having been burnt before by Intel’s previous ultra-thin experiment, so-calledCULV (Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage) notebooks. Those CULV machines used low-power, underclocked processors to delivery netbook-style runtimes in what were usually 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch chassis. However, underwhelming performance and overlap in pricing between netbooks at the low-end and regular notebooks for

Netflix lands in Brazil; Western Digital offers WD TV Live Plus Netflix service

Image
Netflix announced yesterday that it’s streaming service was now available in Brazil bringing the streaming content the provider offers to South America for the first time. The last year has been a big one for Netflix, which was only in the US to start. The company has rolled out internationally in a big way and is continuing to do so. The new Portuguese-language version of Netflix is in Brazil right now for BR$14.99 monthly. This week the Spanish language version or Netflix will hit Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay with the price in Argentina at 39 pesos and Uruguay and Paraguay will cost $7.99 monthly. On September 8, Chile will get Netflix at 3790 pesos monthly with Bolivia getting it for $7.99 USD monthly. Later in the week, the service will hit the Andean region and Columbia as well as Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador. Next week the service will land in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Western Digital has also announced that its WD TV Live Media Player now supports Netflix in

Amazon delivery locker trial begins Friday says 7-Eleven

Image
Amazon’s in-store pick-up system, tipped last week as being imminently trialled at 7-Eleven stores, could open for service as early as this Friday, according to new reports. Geekwire hunted down one of the Amazon delivery lockers at the 1522 East Madison Street 7-Eleven in Seattle, and were told by a clerk that the store plans to activate them by the end of the week. The concept is straightforward: customers ordering from Amazon but uncertain whether they will be at home or at the office will be able to direct their delivery to a locker at a nearby 7-Eleven store. Those lockers – which have various sizes of cabinets, with forty in the unit spotted this week, to accommodate different scales of package – will be managed by a keypad and monitor, similar to that of an ATM, in the middle of the unit. Although Amazon has not confirmed that it is trialling the system, and there is no branding anywhere on the lockers themselves, the expectation is that shoppers will be sent a unique passcode –

iPad 2 Griffin DJ Cable and djay app by algoriddim Review [Video]

Image
You’ve heard the rumors, seen the videos, you may have even messed around with a DJ sort of app on an iPad before, but here it is – this is the real deal – here you go. What we’re looking at here is two bits of awesomeness, together combined to create one “it just works” sort of digital DJ situation. First there’s the djay app developed by algoriddim. This is an app that displays for you two tracks of music (or any sort of audio) that you can control with what everyone knows to be modern DJ controls. Equalize, mix, record, and play. And you can do it all with the hardware bit of this equation: the Griffin DJ Cable. Plug the cable into your iPad 2, start up the djay app, and you’ll be on your way to not just blasting out audio, but previewing it as you connect one of your two new ports into your pair of headphones, the other connected to your fabulous gigantic speakers. Now I’m not going to get too extremely in-depth with this app because while it’s created with the ability to tend to

Nokia’s N9 MeeGo handset heading to Mexico

Image
Nokia has been limiting the planned distribution for its N9 MeeGo smartphone, having officially announced that the handset would not be sold in the US, the UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. But surprisingly, the Nokia N9 will be making its way to Mexico. This should come to the delight of MeeGo fans here in the states that have had thoughts of acquiring the device abroad. Now, you won’t have to travel so far. The Nokia N9 was introduced with a warm reception back in June as it raised new hopes for the MeeGo platform with its unique design and revamped interface. It featured a 3.9-inch full touchscreen front-face covered with Gorilla Glass, pillow-shaped chassis, promising new swipe interface, and premium Carl Zeiss optics for its 8-megapixel camera. However, Nokia will be basing its first Windows Phone 7 Mango handset on the N9 with near identical styling. And since Nokia is committed to promoting Windows Phone 7, distribution for the N9 would understandably be limited, especially

HTC Flyer Honeycomb 3.2 update leaked with screenshots

Image
The HTC Flyer 7-inch Android tablet that boasts an optional stylus looks to be getting its Android 3.2 Honeycomb update very soon. MoDaCo’s Paul O’Brien got a hold of a beta version of the update along with the “Sense 1.1 for Tablets” update and has publicly released the ROM for all to download and has also tossed up some screenshots of the new interface. The screenshots give a nice preview of what Android 3.2 Honeycomb with the new Sense UI will look like on the Flyer. It maintains the iconic HTC Sense Flip clock widget, Home and Multitasking button, a modified clock, as well as notification and battery icons on the bottom right of the screen. What’s a bit confusing is that the new Sense UI is called “Sense 1.1 for Tablets” whereas the current Flyer shipped with a version called Sense 2.1, which looks a lot like Sense 3.0 running on HTC smartphones. Also, the Flyer Honeycomb ROM that O’Brien put up is a developer build beta version and thus he offers various warnings of possible devic
