New study explores why some diabetics escape complications

A new study from Lund University Diabetes Centre attempts to find out why some diabetics never develop severe or fatal complications. After only ten years with diabetes, 70 per cent of patients will have some form of kidney damage that may progress to kidney failure. As many suffer from eye complications - some will develop severe visual impairment and two per cent will become blind. Major diabetic complications include kidney disease (nephropathy), eye damage (retinopathy), heart attacks and stroke. Valeriya Lyssenko and Peter Nilsson are leading the PROLONG (PROtective genes in diabetes and LONGevity) study which is starting now in Skane with a pilot study of patients with diabetes duration of more than 30 years. At a later stage patients will be recruited from all hospitals and health care centres in Sweden. They will be compared with diabetics who have already developed severe complications despite having had diabetes for less than 15 years. "The blood vessels a

Simplifying choice a complex task for DTH viewers, providers

Image
Ms Bamini Visagan, a homemaker in Chennai, has still not finalised the list of TV channels her five-member family wants to watch. In the last three days since she decided to go in for the a la carte offer from her DTH service provider, she says every day the list either sheds or adds two-three channels. Only her children are sure of what they want: The complete genre of kids’ channels. The others in the family are yet to decide what each one wants to watch. “I’m really finding it difficult to finalise the channels within my planned budget of Rs 180-200 a month. Now, I’m literally scratching my head,” she says. Even as most DTH operators roll out the option for subscribers to choose and pay for the channels of their choice, many subscribers, like Ms Visagan, are now hard put to decide whether choosing their own channels or a package the service provider offers would be more economical for them. From a list of 150-200 channels, it will certainly be a tough task to pick and choose a few

Consolidation and greater foreign interest forecast for Indian DTH sector

Increased foreign participation is inevitable and consolidation in India’s direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV market is likely in the next two to five years, according to new research from Screen Digest. The proposed easing of foreign involvement limits in Indian broadcasting ventures from 49% to 74% will, according to the report, see more international players enter India’s DTH market – following what has been a successful ‘litmus test’ by way of News Corporation’s stake in the Tata Sky platform. DTH in India has experienced a 108% compound growth rate since its 2005 launch with Dish TV and its initial subscriber base of 750,000. As of the end of 2010, India’s six DTH operators – Dish TV, Sun Direct, Tata Sky, Reliance Big TV, Airtel Digital and Videocon d2H – now host about 30 million subscribers between them. “At the end of 2010, India’s DTH base accounted for 21% of the world’s pay satellite subscriber base,” says Aravind Venugopal, analyst – television, Screen Digest. “By 201

‘Sholay’ veteran actor A.K. Hangal in miserable condition

Image
He had been the regular elderly figure, popularly seen in several classic movies like ‘Sholay’, ‘Shaukeen’, ‘Bawarchi’, ‘Namak Haram’ and recent one ‘Lagaan’. Having worked in nearly 200 films, the 95-year veteran has even the ‘Padma Bhushan’ award added to his name. But sadly now A.K. Hangal has been reduced to a very poor plight – he is battling with financial crisis and failing health. And more disheartening is that none of the people from the industry are by his side. Hangal, a professional tailor-turned-actor, lives a life of penury in his modest ground floor flat in Saraswati Apartments, Santacruz East. He is under the care of his son Vijay (74), a former Bollywood still photographer, who himself is suffering from severe back ailment, due to which he left his job. "In the world of Play Station & X-Box, you cannot miss Ra.One" - Arjun Rampal

Image
The man is happy, he is thrilled, and he is back with a vengeance for yet another award winning role. Yes, I am talking about India's finest looking actor, Arjun Rampal. Arjun is on a winning spree since two years. Rock On gave him the National Award and the Best Supporting Actor award and Raajneeti gave him the Best Supporting actor award and still counting. After winning the Zee Cine Awards 2011, Rampal said, "I am really happy today. It all goes to show that audiences haven't given up on me yet. They love my work and I feel I'm at my peak and doing few films but good films, and Ra.One is one of them." When you meet Rampal now-a-days, he isn't a changed man after winning acclaims and awards, oh no! He is rather more confident, more agile and more supportive of new ideas which he thinks will benefit the Indian Film Industry. T-Series files lawsuit against OC of CWG 2010 for copyright infringement

Image
The problems of the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010 don't seem to end even though the games ended long back. The latest issue facing the Organising Committee of the CWG is that music label T-Series has sent a legal notice worth one crore for infringement of copyright. The Organising Committee apparently played some songs belonging to T-Series without the required permission or license. Some of the songs are from popular T-Series albums such as Kaminey, Slumdog Millionaire, Housefull and Om Shanti Om etc. T-Series claims that the Committee had taken ground license for playing the songs but they never took the license for telecast rights. Looks like the problems of the Organising Committee of the CWG 2010 are far from over.

Rohit Shetty to remake Angoor with SRK?

Image
Post the humongous success of Golmaal 3 , Rohit Shetty has surely become one of the most sought after directors in Bollywood. While Rohit's next two films are the remake of Singam (starring Ajay Devgn) and Bol Bachchan (starring Ajay Devgn & Abhishek Bachchan), the buzz is that Rohit is even planning a film with none other than Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh was mighty impressed with Rohit's work in Golmaal 3 and has shown interest in working with the talented director. While details about their project are still unknown, the strong buzz is that Rohit would be remaking the cult-classic Angoor with Shah Rukh Khan. Angoor , released in 1982, was a laugh-riot that featured Sanjeev Kumar, Deven Varma and Moushmi Chatterjee in lead roles. Comedy being Rohit Shetty's forte, it would be interesting to see how the director tackles this subject that too with the Baadshah of Bollywood.

Celina Jaitly to be appointed as brand ambassador of Xage Mobiles

Image
The way one associates the term 'Perfection' with Aamir Khan, 'Martial Arts' with Akshay Kumar, 'Romance' with Ranbir Kapoor, 'Grace' with Madhuri Dixit, the very same way, the apt way to describe gorgeous Celina Jaitly would be 'Beauty Personified'. According to ApnaDesi 's confirmed sources, it is the same Celina Jaitly, who has now been appointed as brand ambassador of 'Xage Mobiles'. The source also added that a high-blitz advertising campaign featuring Jaitly has been conceptualized for the same.

Rohit Shetty's Singam Remake to release on July 22, 2011

Image
After the successful run of Golmaal 3 at the Box Office last year, Rohit Shetty has once again proved that he is a man with the 'Midas Touch'. And this man is now all ready to set the B.O. on fire once again this year with his next film, which is the remake of the Tamil film Singam . And needless to say, like all of Rohit's previous films, this film also stars Ajay Devgn, in the lead. The shooting of the film, which will start in March, will be produced by Reliance Big Pictures, which had also co-produced the Tamil version. Readers may recollect that the 'original' Singam (Tamil) starred Surya in the lead role. Looks like Rohit Shetty's the name to watch out for this year too!
