Police: 1 skier killed in New Zealand avalanche

Wellingotn: Police say an avalanche in New Zealand has caught five skiers and one is reported to have died.

Police say in addition to the reported death, one of the skiers suffered serious injuries. The other three escaped serious injury.

If the death in Friday's avalanche is confirmed it would be the third death in three weeks on New Zealand's ski slopes.

Police say the avalanche occurred in the Methven area of the South Island's snow fields, which are popular with tourists.
